My mom's family lives on a small farming island somewhere in the Thousand Islands region. Anyway, only one my Aunt/Uncle pairs still live there and when I was younger, with they youngest being my only playmate whenever I visited the area. Which was kind of boring as all hell, until we found something more than a bloodline in common.
I recall one Xmas season going to visit and bringing along my brand new GBA, along with an assortment of games including the original Megaman Battle Network and whatever that first Golden Sun for the GBA was. After watching me at it for a while my cousin asked and I handed it over to him for a bit, the kid seemingly surprisingly good for someone who'd only very rarely played any kind of game and owned nothing but a few bland PC titles.
The next time I went back to visit he had the internet, a GBA of his own, a N64 and a Playstation as well as a host of much more modern PC games (Starcraft, Half Life, etc) and I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. I'd probably give a good deal of credit to the having of internet that he hadn't before but when I heard the phrase "that game you had last time was fun, I figured I'd try some things" followed by "speaking of, have you tried the third title in that series? It came out a week ago and I..." and such.
Later I was also quite proud when he could hold his own in SSB Melee when I visited again. The gamer within and all that, I guess.
