I know plenty of people who suffer from 'Fake Geek', mostly from stuff such as liking Big Bang Theory or figuring out how to bring up the DOS prompt on the high school machines (note I said DOS prompt, which is different to the command prompt).

I'm a CS student and avid gamer who plays game both virtual and physical, and yet these people try and claim they're part of geek culture when they're the kind of people we hate claiming they're geeks.

I actually had an idea that I should start a hair metal band to prepare for the inevitable revival of hair metal.

I have personally to some extent. I am quite muscular, fit and confident. I don't really fit into the stereotype of a geek but what you have to remember is that the geek culture is the creation o the outcasts of schools and if you possess features that fit in with the popular crowd you aren't going to be seen as one of the geeks. You instead are a part of the group that mocks them. Until you prove that you are in their group, sharing similar history and feelings, they are not going to believe you are a geek and thus exclude you. This is what it comes down to. If you are a good looking girl who is fine in social interactions then what do you have in common with them? A love of games? If that's the case then go to a convention but a subculture it not just based on an item but the members and all their thoughts and emotions as well.

If it's any comfort I think I'm the only geek, male or female, in my entire county. Even the Steam groups are completely dead.

Someone alert Boudica, MoonlightButterfly and itsthesheppy already and let the games begin.
Opponents shall be found along the way.
And with some luck, someone will say something intended as a humorous post wich gets interpreted as "sexist" by another party.
Or even better, someone says something ACTUALLY sexist and the rock starts rolling.
Ohh boy, nothing like a bit of glee on rainy days like these.
I HAVE ARRIVED!

But no I don't think this meme is particularly sexist. :p I use it a lot of my mates facebook page who likes handegg (american football) and Halo and Madden, he's such a casual! I joke, I joke.

Fakers gonna fake.

GRAAAAAHAHHHH This annoys me as much as people wearing band shirts, but having no idea about anything the band has done. I've refused to serve people (and it's both genders) in work because of this, but then, girls started wearing those "Talk Nerdy to Me" shirts... so I did... and often got called a weirdo or a no life loser.

This fake nerd bullshit, male and female has to stop.
And it's especially insulting to me, because it does give the false impressions women only wear nerd apparel for the attention, I grew up in a house where my Mother taught me Warhammer, my sisters and I had Street Fighter tournaments and we would have dedicated Lego days.

Apparently you were to early, quick, someone do something miogynist for my entertainment.
WAITAMINUTE: Someone could perceive this thread as sexist, since I call for someone to belittle a gender for my entertainment. DANG

I think this is relevant.

Mostly I'm not too bothered. If someone wants to call themselves a nerd, that's fine. I'll engage them in conversation on various "geeky" topics. If they don't know what the fuck they're talking about, I"ll call them on it. If they do, I welcome them to the club.

This woman has dishonored our good name, and for that must be cast into the pits of Apokolips. People like this are the reason that genuinely nerdy girls are given a hard time.

Is there a male equivalent of this phenomenon? Obviously I've only ever experienced the geek gatekeeper horror from the female side - Do guys ever get quizzed about their geek cred before they're accepted as a 'true' geek? Are there some geek circles which are as hostile to newbie males as they are to females?

Yes. It's not a gender thing, it's a clique thing. Women may experience it with particular regards to video gaming, but the act of exclusivity is not gender specific.

I'm interested from a 'I want to know more about why this happens in geek culture' standpoint more than a 'AAAAAAAA MEN ARE OPPRESSING ME!' one, so if we can get through this conversation without it devolving into a whiny argument about which gender whines the most I think we'd all be very happy (Ah, impossible dreams...).
It happens in every culture, and that's pretty much it. It's just human nature to build a wall, artificial or not, which makes you better than other people in some way. It's part of how you define yourself.

Any time someone calls themselves a geek for knowing some 1st gen pokemon/ watching the dark knight movies/ or any single small fact that is lightly nerdy. Its like me saying I am a fan of soap opras because I know the name of one, or a music junky because I listen to some music.

I honestly just came here to say fuck you image, I have read all 900 issues of Batman.

More on topic, no. I don't think it's sexist in any way. You could take the text from over 90% of the pictures of this meme and put them over a picture of an overly-geeky guy and it'd make sense.

How is she playing Zelda with a an xbox controller....must be an emulator or something :|
Good catch. Hmm... I'm at a loss, then. Unless she's playing something else first and then still has to move on to Zelda before she showers. ... That sounds more like me. "Finish this one, then I"ll start the other and then maybe I'll shower and eat."

Let it be known that on this day we brought hair metal back from the grave. Prepare yourself mortals, you cannot handle the shitstorm of hair and crazy guitar licks coming your way.

Around here, a small town in Norway, this happens all the time. I see it a lot because there is kind of only one geek group that hang out together, so when someone comes over to us and talks about being a "real" gamer or a "real" geek. He will most likely only have tried one thing that can be considered geeky and thinks he know everything and is "one of us". The problem is that we will most of the time just ignore him because the one thing he has tried we have either already played and gotten sick of it or we have found something new that we talk about.

Never with girls though, because they don't exist here :(
I would have loved to have a girl to talk to about geeky things, that would have been awesome.

Happens to men all the time.

'You're a casual, so you're not a real gamer geek.'
'You play consoles, so you're not a real gamer geek.'
'You haven't read the complete works of Alan Moore, you can't be a comic book geek!'
'You haven't read Marcel Prousts A La Recherche du Temps Perdue? You're not a real literary geek.'
'You don't own a Collected Works of Shakespeare? You're not a dramatic theatre geek.'
'You haven't seen every episode of Astro Boy? You're not a true otaku.'

Although obviously changed to fit the same format, those are all actual things I've been told. Me who has over 100 volumes of manga, nearly 300 DVDs, sci-fi, a nearly complete Disney collection, indie movies, close to 100 trade paper backs, more fiction books than I can even reasonably count, and about a hundred games and fifteen years playing them? Apparently I'm still not a geek because of one specific failing of my knowledge.

Men do get it, it just falls under the heading of something else. Nerds question their fellows' geek cred all the time!
