I want to know whether or not I should buy Fallout 3 or New Vegas? I plan on buying the game from steam and I can only buy one, well for now at least.

FO3 felt like more of a sandbox game, in that you from as soon as you got out into the open world you could go exploring in any direction. Though, the main story was fairly linear.

NV felt more linear once you got into the world, because the most direct path to the Strip is blocked off by Deathclaws and Cazadors. The main story has a few different paths depending on which path you decide to follow... But, regardless of what path you choose, you're going to be dealing with the same few factions (Kahns, Boomers, Brotherhood, Kings, etc.)

In terms of gameplay, they're virtually identical. So not much of a difference there.

Both are great in their own way, and I suggest getting both. If you must choose one, New Vegas is probably the one to go with.

New Vegas polished everything Fallout 3 did right and changed things that it had done wrong, resulting in a superb game.

Its personal choice. Fallout New Vegas is objectively the better game, from a roleplay perspective since your choices matter a bit more than just plain black and white, although Fallout 3's The Pitt DLC offers some very nice grey morality choices. Both are effectively open world games, though New Vegas discourages mindless exploring since you can run into things you arent capable of killing just yet, like Cazadors and Deathclaws which are very nasty early on, though become less of a threat the better equipment/level you have.

But the big difference are: New Vegas has a less linear mainquest, you can choose between 4 factions to support, Mr. House, the Legion, NCR or yourself. You have no subway system and as such there are significantly less ghouls, although there are still plenty of them. Less Super Mutants as well and no dumb "Vault with FEV" thing either.

So all in all, its up to you, Fallout 3 has some good DLC, such as The Pitt but has terrible railroad-mainplot and black/white moral choices. New Vegas is much more Fallout in the sense of the old games, where as 3 has more the feel of the war being over for maybe 10 years, and not 200. Honestly, now that there's a sale, just get both. But imho, and i played both extensively, New Vegas is the better one, but others might feel different.

I would really recommend both, especially for someone new to Fallout because FO3 has the best intro to the world hands down, it sets the scene like no other game in the series before it, sadly as it goes towards the end things get rather less impressive.

So that is where NV comes in, starts out awfully, for the first 3 hours it's just complete "wtf... this is convoluted nonsense", but as it goes on it actually gets progressively better.

FO3 is more of a apocalyptic, bleak, barren (boring) survival experience, but NV is a post-apocalyptic experience with humour, good writing, developed characters, and far more interesting locales and set pieces.

Story-wise, NV is much better. Gameplay-wise, they're basically the same. But NV feels more like a Fallout game, rather than a game with the Fallout name stuck to it like FO3.

I'd say get both if you can, but if not, get NV.

While most people love FO3 to death I didnt.. I do however love New Vegas. Its the proper environment for me as an original Wasteland player it feels right and as stated here.. the story is great. But both are cheap and are often on sale and already have been on sale for the Steam Summer Sale. You could probably get both for $10 and thats hours and hours of game play.

They are both good and if you can you should play both, but NV is still better in every aspect.
There are only two things that are better in F3: music (killing Super Mutants with minigun while listening to "Oooh, I am a mighty-mighty man!.." is just so damn good) and that big guns and small guns are two separate skills (it's not like you can properly aim a missle launcher if you know how to aim a revolver, is it?).

For me, it's New Vegas all the way; better writing, better worldbuilding, more choice in the story, deeper gameplay and it's much truer to the Fallout feel. 3 is a good game, but in my opinion New Vegas trumps it in just about every way.

Both are good, New Vegas has more content but I personally prefer Fallout 3 better.

Gameplay wise, they are the same thing. The only difference is iron sights in New Vegas, which I believe modders have added to 3 anyway. Story Wise, 3 wins hands down. New Vegas's story, to me, was really boring and just lacking in dept. Each of the 4 options are pretty much the same thing with different order of quests. 3's story actually was interesting though felt really pushy at some points. Quest wise, 3 again. The quest have meaning in 3 and don't feel as copy pasted as New Vegas's.

Personally I would go for Fallout 3. New Vegas felt more like a wild western type of setting than a post apocalyptic like Fallout 3 was. The music is a lot better in Fallout 3 in my opinion (If I have to hear "Johnny Guitar" one more time in NV I may have to kill someone or kill myself). NV also felt a heck of a lot more linear, FO3 just gave you run of the world as soon as you got out to it, FO3 also had a lot more interesting little things to find and see while exploring. If you can get both though, get both. FO3 also sets he scene a whole lot better, I think the intro to NV is what puts me off it so much, I don't feel as connected to my character as I did in FO3.

Both are great, I prefer Fallout 3 for the characters and story but I can't personally play it currently... The problem is that after I played New Vegas there are some features from that game that I miss too badly going back to FO3!

I think Fallout 3 is way creepier, so if you want to feel uneasy that is the one to chose. It has more vaults and creepy underground facilities, and it's also far more open if you like that kind of thing. As a result the story feels a bit more detatched.

There's another topic just like this one, that was put up like yesterday...

Anyway, get both and run A Tale of Two Wastelands for FNV

I liked both :D . Personally I prefer Fallout 3 because there was a lot more killing shit and exploring cool shit than New Vegas. New Vegas had an unforgivable amount of faffing about in my opinion. So many quests were just running from one end of new Vegas to other to trade stuff and fighting occasional weak enemies trying to mug you (which does reinforce the curior part of being the protagonist but it wasn't fun)

Like I said though, I liked them both and had about 3 playthroughs of each game. New Vegas's companions were sooooooo much better and I remember the characters from new Vegas way better but I like the running around and exploring aspect better so Fallout 3 for me

I enjoyed the random wandering that you could do in 3, but your choices have more dynamic effects in NV. Plus NV has more memorable characters and dialogue choices that make sense. As has already been said, the gameplay is identical, so that's not going to be a deciding factor.

One extra that I'd throw is is whether or not you've visited the areas the games cover in real life - that would be an extra vote for me since it's entertaining to compare the real thing to the Fallout version.

They're both pretty good, though I'd go with New Vegas over 3 if someone held a gun to my head and forced me to choose. Mainly because there's many more mods to my taste and I found the story more appealing. Fallout 3's story is very linear and can't really be relayed different ways. With New Vegas, you can choose which factions you want to help/destroy/ignore. Not that it makes much of a difference.
