I'm about 20 hours into Fallout 3, and I really can't see what the big deal is. The gameplay is clunky and stale and there's really no sense of depth to the game. It's a shame because I really want to like the it. But so far, it's just boring. GTAIV seems to be the game everyone loves to hate right now, but in all honesty I had much more fun with that than I'm having with Fallout 3.

I'm sorry to say this but Fallout 3's main storyline is horridly bad done luckily some of the side quests and things you can do make up for that.

Fallout 3 has a better single player, but GTAIV has multiplayer. It just depends. Do you want 100% SP or 50/50 SP/MP?

Don't let the "GTAIV has repetitive missions" argument fool you. Fallout 3 does the same thing. Just a warning, the GTAIV multiplayer is pretty different and slower then other shooter games, mostly do to the cities size. Just don't expect it to be the same as a typical shooter.

My thoughts exactly.

While it's a toss up, I'd recomend Fallout 3 over GTA4 any day.

Most of the things were fixed in the patch (the freezing everytime that wahateveritis pops up was fixed), and I just think it's much more fun than GTA4.

May I point something out to everyone. I Don't give a goat's eye about DLC, Im happy with a normal game. But here's a new question.

Is it better than oblivion? I couldn't get into oblivion, so is it better?

well this question is easy fallout 3 wins just for the simple fact that they took the good bits out of GTA such as it being a sandbox game and you could do what ever you wanted GTA 4 felt very restrictive.

Depends on why you couldn't get into Oblivion. Though I'm the same as you. I couldn't get into Oblivion, but I've currently logged about 30 hours or so into Fallout and I'd say it's a much better game in my opinion. The reason I couldn't get into Oblivion was because of two reasons;

1. I hated the combat. It was extremely repetitive and dull, and I couldn't motivate myself to even bother with it.
2. The game just failed to immerse me. Alot of the quests I did were very uninteresting, and it just felt as though alot of them were just there as filler.

On topic though, it's really just about what type of game you prefer. My opinion is that they're both great games. GTA4 if you liked any of the previous installments, just because it's basically the same except for: a much better storyline, and refined driving mechanics. Though the army doesn't show up when you get a 6 star wanted level :( Fallout 3 if you like the idea of exploration (there's tons to see) and the freedom to warp the game's storyline however you want to. If you're into RPGs then there's the whole levelling up system and the loot you score from corpses and just looking around.

Hope I helped :)

EDIT: I played these games on the 360, so I don't know if that affects your judgement or not :S

Fallout 3

It's a one-of-a-kind game with an amazing plot.

GTAIV..well, you've played one, you've played them all sadly to say.

Didn't we have somebody asking this exact same question, with a poll, a little awhile ago?

I couldn't find it, but I did find this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/5419-Review-Fallout-3
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/48-Grand-Theft-Auto-IV

There's escapist reviews of both games (at least if you call what Yahtzee does to games "reviewing" them) and they're sort of there to give you an idea which you want to buy, so read up.

My personal answer would be the same I give to anyone asking "durr, how should I spend my money" advice, and that is to give us a clue as to the kinds of games you enjoy. If you're not going to do that, you might as well just throw your money down the sewer for all the enjoyment you're going to get out of it, because everybody enjoys different things and none of us are mind readers.

If you decide to go with the sewer option, might I recommend my PayPal donation button instead? ;)

I'm taking your advice, (No, not the sewer option, or Paypal) I've put some info on the first post look there if you want, or you can beg for the Paypal option.

EDIT: I also had a look at the escapist reviews, didn't help much, and I watch Yahtzee and he would point at Fallout 3, but then again, I loved MGS4, he didn't, enough said.

I'm not to the point of begging (yet) :p

Yes, I have to agree it's not that Yahtzee so much reviews games as invent ways to ridicule them. I suppose we should thank him for that, as we do appreciate the laugh. Nonetheless, there's a number of incredible titles, such as Dead Space, that came off as looking awful after giving the Yahtzee treatment.

So, anyway, looking at your original post again, I've have to say that GTA 4 is the clear answer for you. If you liked Mercenaries 2 (which is basically GTA in war zone) then that's a point in its favor. If you disliked Oblivion, know that Fallout 3 is pretty much Oblivion++ with post nuclear overtones, so steer clear of Fallout 3 unless the only thing stopping you from enjoying Oblivion was the setting.

It was the setting, I guess. First person sword swinging is not as fun as it sounds, neither is having the most boring conversations with NPC characters ever, and that sounds boring from the start. Also I was too overwhelmed by the great big environment thrown at me. I ended up getting lost and stuck in Dungeons that were too high level for me. That was annoying.

Sounds like it was more than just the setting to me. Yeah, steer clear of Fallout 3. Or maybe give it a rent, don't just buy it. In fact, give them both a rent -- I rarely buy any game that isn't unrentable these days.
