STALKER

Go with Stalker.

Fallout 3 has good atmosphere and everything, but the plot will make you want to kill children. What is it about Fallout 3's plot that will make you want to kill children? Well apart from the fact its doesn't make any sense whatsoever, there is one big thing. And that thing is called Little Lamplight.

So yeah, go with Stalker.
What was so bad about Little Lamplight?
I found it boring, but not bad...

OT: Fallout 3. You can spend hours and hours on it.
I'll spoiler this for the sake of the OP.

Well for one it shouldn't exist. Apparently they boot out anyone who turns 16. Kids don't work like that. Put a 16 year old in with a bunch of kids and the 16 year old would be in control almost immediately. On top of that none of the kids can be killed, and you have to sit through them bitching you out and outright insulting you. And you can't get by them and their flimsy cardboard door entrance unless you hike all the way across the wasteland to a slaver camp and free some more damn kids.

In short. The kids have plot armor and cannot die. They know this, and use this knowledge to be the biggest assholes on the planet. You are forced to go through them. Its basically the writers at Bethesda giving you the finger, then punching you in the stomach.
Spoilered as well
I managed to accidentally free the kids before hearing of Little Lamplight, so I didn't get much of that, they let me in and gave me stuff...

Do you have Shadow of Chernobyl? Get that over Clear Sky. Fallout 3 is utterly amazing, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R games are much more challenging than Fallout, as Fallout 3 is egregiously easy, and that sometimes gets in the way. As with anything comparing two games, decide which you prefer the idea of. Neither is outright better.

Lucky. I should probably try that, see what happens.

The part that pisses me off is that I couldn't do anything but suck up to them. Its not like I only want 2 options, kill all or bend over backwards for them. There are gradients between "do everything and suck up to annoying kids" and "kill all annoying kids". There are areas of grey there. But they don't even give the extreme choices. Ugh Fallout 3's plot and various "choices" make me rage. Hell, the whole plot is full of insane amounts of holes. For example, your trying to fix a water purification machine, but Megaton already has one! And if you blew up megaton, those little robot bulters give you six glasses a day through condensation. You wouldn't even need to build robots for condensation. Plus, he wants to destroy a device that can turn the wasteland into a paradise, just for some fresh water that you can get in many different, less paradise destroying ways. On top of this, purifying all the water kills the Mirelurks, destroying a large food source in the wasteland. Its just unbelievable how stupid it all is.

AH! If anyone needs me, I'll be in the angry dome!

Which I actually did. Then I felt bad, so I tried talking to him again.

Me: "Lets try this again, help me get through here."
McCready: "Fuck you you mungo shit-butt!"

Then I blacked out, and when I came to I had no more mini-nukes, and the entire area was coated in radiation and dead bodies.

Stalker. I'm playing Clear Sky right now, and I love it just as much as Soc. The weapon modding is an awesome addition, but the worst part about it is the nade spam. But luckily a mod has fixed that for me.

Stalker original no doubt. Mainly because the game world feels pretty big but there is also alot to do and shoot and no empty areas. It's white knuckle difficult but still within reason. The atmosphere of the game alone is just gutwrenchingly good.

Fallout 3 on the other hand is a big open area with very few things to do or shoot at. And if you go looking for stuff to shoot all you are going to do is get out of ammo fast if your a new player. The atmosphere is apocalyptic but soons get ruined by Samy tight corridor/vault/cave/subway shooting blah. Has the too much lootable areas and close to nothing in them stupidity.

Have not played STALKER but have played Metro 2033 which is said to have similar elements with it.
But really I'd go for Fallout 3 as you can have alot more playtime with it and there is a lot more exploration. And as for the issue of not being able to kill Children (which you will desperately want to do!), there is a website dedicated to Fallout 3 mods, which I shan't post for fear of getting in trouble here, but there is a mod there which can allow you to kill the little bastards!
But get both if you aren't sure.

I would say Fallout3, by about 5 billion miles.
You played S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? Fallout 3 was a really great game, but it was definitely not "The worlds finest post apocalypse simulator". Survivung in fallout 3 even on ultra dificulty was not hard. It was fun, but very empty. It had nice humor but not enough of it. It wanted to be serious but it was not quite that either. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. obliterates it in atmosphere and graphics and main story.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. doesnt have those flaws (that is also bad cause its easy is most games hard, and the normal is like Ultra Hard). Its buggy (but its engine and AI is simply too much more advanced) and sometimes its hard to follow whats going on. Its not a perfect game, but its very ambitious and awesome. You can like Fallout 3 more, (if you have played both) but dont dismiss a game simply because you dont like it. Try to get a better understanding of things before you make your judgement.
It also has 1/10th of the depth and immersion. In fallout 3 everything is connected. Your actions influence long term interactions with other characters, and characters acknowledge each other. They aren't just static nameless undiscriminated non player characters standing in the same place all day giving you quest #32. They feel like real people. No other game comes even close to fallout 3 in that aspect, not even much more advanced rpg's like Bioware's stuff.

There is a reason people still play Fallout 3 after they've finished it 3 times and done every single quest in the game, there's still stuff to be found and to be learned, and different interactions to be had.

This is the one aspect of fallout 3 that overshadows every single bug and glitch and flaw that would otherwise turn Fallout 3 into a crappy game. Place STALKER in Fallout 3's game engine. Would you ever play STALKER again? I don't think so.

Yes, I do love Fallout 3, while being one of the most glitchy and flawed games of this generation, it's still as close as any game has gotten to perfection in my opinion. You are free to have your own, but no matter what you say I still stand by my conviction that Fallout 3 is about 5 billion times ahead of STALKER.
