First person, 3rd person looks just as bad as Oblivions did.. The character doesn't look like they're connecting with the ground at all, stairs are the worst.
This is ture, Beth really need to look into thier mo cap for the next ES game.

It is also why I now always zoom the camera in so it goes int o a Resi 4 style view, with the wanderer on the left of the screen.

Couple that with some leather armour on a female character and the Fallout third person isn't bad at all to look at...

First Person 90% of the time. The animation in Third Person view is just incredibly wooden and immersion breaking. The only time I really use Third Person is to check out what my character looks like with their current equipment. I did use Third Person slightly more in Oblivion, although only with melee-based characters. Trying to hit anything accurately with a ranged attack in either game is just next to impossible.

Fallout 3 had the same problem Oblivion did with the third person camera in that it was by far the most impractical view they possibly could have chosen (your character annoyingly stands right where the crosshair is with the camera zoomed back a good 10 feet, besides getting a dramatic look at yourself when you're wandering through the wasteland it has no real practical application).

I stuck with first person.

Mostly first person, because of the bad animation etc. But I do sometimes like to zoom in as far as I can and play over the shoulder like with a Resi game, particularly when using guns that take up alot of the screen, like Harkness' plasma rifle.

I always use first person. It seems more natural and I think Fo3 is more tuned to that than TPS. But it is better than Morrowind/Oblivion in third person.

First Person when I'm fighting, third person when I'm just running around.
Ditto. I like to watch my character run whenever i'm just walking around and first when I fight stuff. In Oblivion I play in third person all the time. It's much more epic to watch your armored character do the things in combat, rather than just watching your weapon wave around and your shield (if you use one) pop up when you hold down the Left Trigger.

Im making a stealth character now.

I'm a fan of third person, because I enjoy looking at how amazing my character looks striding across the wastes. Most of my gunplay is resolved through VATS anyway, as either I'm not good enough, or there isn't enough ammunition in the game, or both, to shoot everything "naturally" through first person on Very Hard.

Third person, I like looking at my butt in the Enclave officer uniform :p
And since I either use VATS or the shocksword, I don't need to go into first person mode for shooting :)

third person mode 98% of the time.

only first person in confined areas, as the third person item selection can be horribly broken (ie. aim the cursor 1/3 of the screen width away from the item you're trying to pick up to actually pick it up)

May have something to do with the *cough* female model + clothing replacement mods i have installed though :p

I used to play it exclusively in FPS mode, but since modding it I've found myself using the TPS mode more and more, just because it looks so awesome.

When you can make yourself look as badass as this, why wouldn't you want to use the 3rd person perspective?

I do admit that Fallout 3 doesn't play as well in the 3rd person, but I just love the look of a huge Space Marine stomping around the place.

Oh and for anyone that's interested, this the Warhammer 40K Space Marine Armour mod by cerberos008, found at the Fallout 3 Nexus site.

Wow at times like this I wish I owned it for the PC

FPS, it's hard to pick things up and loot in general when your staring at your characters ass instead of the delicious nuka-cola.

First Person.
Third Person is good for looking at your character's overall awesome-ness.

Third Person with the camera Zoomed to the waist so I don't have to pay attention to the fact that the ground doesn't affect my feet. RE4 style.

But looting is always done in First Person. I didnt even realize you could pick up Caps from the world until I realized the pile of round things on the table next to me were in fact caps and not part of the world.

The third person feels kinda, awkward. But it's good for just running around, and melee combat.
