I am a big fan of Fallout 3. I like the atmosphere, the atmospehereic soundtrack, as well as the catchy Jazz tunes, I love Three Dog, I even like the combat, which I'll readilly admit is lackluster.

I am currently installing Fallout Classic Collection, and I wanted to know just why fans of the first two sometimes dislike the third so much. Perspectives. Discuss.

I honestly don't know. I'm a fan of both the older Fallouts (1 and 2) and the newer ones (3 and New Vegas). But then again, I did play 3 first. Perhaps fans of the originals were hoping for something more similar to them and didn't like the big gameplay changes 3 made.

From what I've heard the seriousness of the game was one. The things to do I guess, and that "it was dumbed down to an fps" Honestly I keep trying to play the old games, the difficulty may hit you like a rock. I'm pretty much at a loss and all I do is miss. That doesn't mean they aren't good, I've read a lot about them and they seem pretty incredible.

Pffft, I dunno man. This is the Escapist. Why don't you go ask the guys over at No Mutants Allowed? They're the ones giving us the bad rep.

I started out with 3 only because I had never even heard about Fallout before that point, but now I have the first 2 (Along with Tactics) and I'm loving the whole dang franchise (Even though I kinda suck at 1 and 2).

Fallout 3 introduced me to the series and since I'm the kind of person who hates being one of those guys who doesn't know the roots of something he's a fan of, I went back and bought the Fallout Trilogy pack for PC. All I can say is that I've beaten every game in the Fallout series (except for Brotherhood of Steel because I've heard it's just a bad Diablo clone) and I have enjoyed all of them. Fallout 2 especially was a great game and for a while I thought I might actually like it more than Fallout 3.
Sadly, Fallout 2 earns 2nd place as my favorite Fallout game because the game tends to force challenging combat situations on you a little too much, but I still love.

i've only ever palyed 3 and might someday get around to playing the other two but i think that fans of the first two don't like it because it did change alot, it's really not as RPG focused as the first two, or so i'm told, and since if you put guns in any game now a days it's sure to sell like an iphone that shoots lasers and makes you coffee, they should not be punished for making it an FPSRPG, at least its not a MMOFPSRPG, christ i dont even want to try and say that.

I played Fallout a while ago. I walked out at the start and was immediately eaten by a giant ant because I couldn't work out how to attack. I never played it again. Then Fallout 3 came along and I loved it. I am still playing it now in fact. I might go back to Fallout one day, but I will need a fair bit of patience.

Because they love to mention that they've played the first two and Fallout 3 is nothing like them ruining everything, and now all these new people are playing it who had never even heard about Fallout. This has ruined everything they ever hoped for!

Nostalgia, Elitism, Pretentiousness... Hell, I don't know. Or maybe they just prefer a game like Fallout 2 over Fallout 3.

I played 1 and 2 before playing 3 and New Vegas.

I like 3 and its Sequ-ansion New Vegas but they play and feel so very different.

The quirkiness, the moral ambiguity, the strategic combat... these were missing.

What we got instead was an atmospheric romp through the wasteland that could suck you in for hours at a time.

The games are different. That is why there are people you dislike the 3rd but love the originals and vice versa.

Also I miss the ability to use explosives to unlock/destroy doors

PS: Captcha why do you throw German words with umlauts at me! "ateue Göttingen"

I tried fallout 1 and 2 and honestly I couldn't get passed the gameplay I hated it, but the story actually seemed much better and it was cool seeing how things tied together, I wouldn't mind if they remade them....

3 pretty much just teleports all the factions from the West to the East, and in general the writing varied from mediocre to bad.

Still like the game though, it's pretty fun, it's just bad for a Fallout game. If they named it anything else, people would be much kinder to it.

I loved Fallout 1 and 2 I also enjoyed 3. Fallout 3 was a big change from the original two. I thought it was a good and needed change however. I do not think that a lot of people would have played another Fallout that was set in the old style (even though a lot of fans including myself would) because the way games are made have changed. The change is also due to the change of the game?s developers. Black Isle Studios made the first two and they did a good job with the turn based format but when the franchise was passed off to Bethesda Game Studios they made it into a first person shooter (more or less) which I also enjoyed.

I loved Fallout 1 and 2... and I enjoyed Fallout tactics... and I loved Fallout 3. Despite some inconsistencies with the feel of the series, Bethesda did a damn good job, overall. It was obvious they were fans of the original series just trying to make the best game they could with the model and game engine they were given.
Honestly, my biggest two problems with the game were
1) the instability of the game engine (havok is just like that, though)
2) the fact that the game was an FPS. Had they made everything cost AP for both the player and enemies, limited enemy ammunition, and made a more survival-and-conservation-oriented enemy AI, the game would have been above and beyond any expectations I could have had for it.
