Hi guys just new to The escapist! Was just wondering if anyone else thought that if Fallout games had the option for the protagonist to be a ghoul it would add a whole new depth to the story? Tell me what u think? :)

1) welcome! stay out of the basement...

2) it could be quite interesting if done right (I mean, change the dialogue and missions a bit to make it seem like the characters react to the change).

sure, why not? as long as it's done properly, that it...

I think it would be a wonderful idea. Depending on implementation. The Ghoul is a tragic character in the fallout universe. One that has not been fully explored. I imagine the game from the perspective of an outsider someone who very rarely meets anyone with a nice opinion. Maybe not overtly aggressive but just very prejudicial. So you explore the game trying to prove yourself a human being or in the alternative validating the prejudicial opinions by become a monster.

Play it on the PC, download Lings Playable Races ... play as Ghoul.

Mods, making all your bizarre dreams come true.

There are mods for both Fallout 3 and New Vegas that allow you to play as a Ghoul. One of them is quite complex and actually allows your character to become a ghoul if they're exposed to too much radiation.

That being said, it's never been a concept that appealed to me.

I'd just like a memorable ghoul character like that foxy ghoul chick you get pregnant from the Van Buran Fallout 3 demo. You know, instead of caricatures like Raoul and that nutcase in Point Lookout.

I think playing as a ghoul would be a great idea. I would certainly do it. It would be like playing as an Argonian or Khajiit in the Elder Scrolls games; some might look towards you with contempt, making some discussions or quests more difficult, while other ghouls may look much more favourably upon you and make other quests easier and possibly open up more interesting dialogue. Unfortunately it means they'd probably have to go about making two protagonists since you'd need a way for the main character to have gone through the transformation process by being in the middle of a radioactive explosion or something, and to date, protagnists in the Fallout universe are mostly Vaulties holed up comfortably underground away from all that nastiness.

It would probably work more with fallout new vegas, as you aren't from vaults, but as you say it would be more difficult with the ones before it.

I've wondered what it'd be like to be able to play as one and I'd like to.

@Rock Beefchest I like your story arch idea, I suppose another path that could be explored would be that because most ghouls are so old, the character could try and piece together who he was before his 'ghoulification'. I suppose another element would be that radiation would act completely differently as a healer, but also to much would increase your ferality; boosting strength but reducing intelligence based skills such as science and medicine.

Yeah, it'd be like playing one of the beast races in Elder Scrolls or a Dunmer. You personality would take a hit but you'd be tougher, stronger and of course, rad resistant. But you know, I can't help but feel that the gameplay of being a Ghoul would be better suited to its own game rather than a Fallout RPG. Imagine your thoughts changing as you mutate, teeting closer to becoming feral and having random outbursts of hostility.

It's something I've always wanted myself, but only if they implemented it well. I don't want just a normal character with a few skill boosts and the odd dialogue option, but it would be great if most characters acted completely differently around depending on your race (or is it species?). Also, anyone else think that the option to be an intelligent Super Mutant would be cool? Hey, maybe even a Night-Kin option as well.

Building a ghoulish utopia in a land totally inhbitable for normal men ... and then get attacked by the Brotherhood. Will this lead to an alliance with the super mutants? Are you willing to sacrifice the high ideals of your settlement and let these brain washed vandals in your sanctum?

Look up. You don't get stat "boosts," you get stat penalties and an immunity to radiation.
I think it was fairly clear what I meant, regardless of specifics.
