A converstion about FF7 got me thinking about how much a fanbase affects a game. My question to all is: Does a Fanbase color your opinion of a game? Say a fanbase is just plain creepy or the fans are assholes. Would that make you dislike a game less or do you just ignore the rabid fans. What do you think.

I wasn't a fan of Halo to begin with, but I can say that its fanbase made me even less of one.

That said, it doesn't seem very smart to prejudge a game based on its fanbase. Lots of people who hold Braid up as the best game ever made are painfully snotty and pretentious, but that doesn't keep Braid from still being a good game. So to speak.

The fans do very little against my liking of something, aside from potential embarrassment from stereotypes.

The point that matters, though, is whether or not the game is good.

I just hate certain fans, not the games they are fans of. Although fan boys have made playing certain games online incredibly annoying and forced me to hate it for a time.

I can't say I've ever been actively deterred from playing a video game by it's fanbase, but there have been a few occasions where a game's fanbase has lured me back in. For example; I hadn't touched Final Fantasy VII in years before I learned that a group of dedicated fans had since broken the game down to a science and taken the gameplay to an entirely new level. Enemy-Skills that I never knew existed, applications for Limit Breaks I never thought were useful and self-imposed "challenges" (Minimum Level Cloud Only, Command Materia Only, Initial Equips Only, No Materia) added layers of gameplay that I simply didn't know where there before discovering FFVII's active fan community.

Sure, there's a lot of negativity to be found. As obsession goes, those fans could have a fair shot at being called some of the most rabid. Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't learn anything useful from them.

No and here's why:
My friend Kevin is a sonic fanboy.
He tells me to get the Sonic the Hedgehog games.
He tells me they're terrific.
I am going to kill him.

Sort of. I mean, I'm a fan of Halo, but it's always been a sort of Shut-the-brain-off kind of entertainment. The fanbase and, especially, the anti-fanbase made simply shutting my brain off to play the game near impossible.

I like a large fan base in my games, means many more online matches and people to troubleshoot with if you have to, and the more merrier!

Did fans of Half Life 2 arrogantly jumping onto Halo based forums angrily typing about how much Halo sucked and how Half Life 2 is simply superiour in every way alienate me from the final product?
Yeah it's a possibility.

Nope I will always play Pokemon no matter how much the demographic is children.
Ditto.
It depends on the quality of the game, if it's a bad game, then I won't play it, if it's good, the I probably will.

In games? No.

Fortunately, I don't have to socialize with people like that, except on XBL and then I can just mute them.

In music? Yeah, it's got an effect. I like death metal, generally speaking, but the people who actually go to the concerts?

...yeah. Same applies to indie rock, really. Man, indie shows are weird.

I wouldn't say the wider fanbase. I mean, there has been the occasional bandwagon I've jumped on and thouroughly enjoyed. I'm a little suspicious when a trend gets big enough, such as that infernal Twilight right now, but it won't stop me from giving it a shot.

I think the one thing that will genuinely colour my opinion is something no one has mentioned yet. A single over-obsessive fan who you have daily contact with. I used to know this girl who was the definition of a fan girl. Unhealthily obsessed with whatever her chosen trends were. I theorise that it's why I don't like FFVII, LOTR or anything vampire themed, because after her babbling in my ear about how infallibly perfect these things were, I just automatically took the opposite position to preserve my sanity and not turn out like her.

Nope, I will love Half-Life 2 no matter how much people rag on it for being "overrated." Criticisms of Mass Effect don't affect my playing of the game, because I am secure in my enjoyment of the game.

I know what you mean i got tired of having my mic on CoD 5 just because if you ended up on a team of guys who had already been planning on playing togethor your sudden arrival pissed them off to no end. There is less confrontation with other people if you don't talk to them. I actually had fun talking to one british guy online while he kicked my ass and vice a versa, but i'm sorry if i'm not the perfect player i just like playing.

Hell no! When the raving lunatics come on saying "OMFG HALO IZ TEH PWNAGE IF U SAY IT SUX THEN U SUK LOLOLOLOL!!!!11!11!!" I just pretend I don't know them... I'll still play Halo, regardless of the fanboys. In fact, by playing Halo, I get a chance to disgrace the fanboys by kicking their asses! I just thought of that!

Also, @ RebelRising, Mass Effect FTW!! Can't wait for 2!

It is still a pretty decent RPG, and you can even fight your friends online now.
