Some of it is great, most is so bad you are inspired to write some to make up for the horribleness of what you just read. Seriously, some of the fan fiction out there is so bad it is like an insult to whatever it is about.

It CAN be awesome. While yeah, a lot of people use it for word porn and fantasy fulfillment, if you look hard you find the gems; stories that either respect the source material with a strict adherence to canon, compellingly present their what-if scenarios through stylish writing and good characterization, and/or are indistinguishable from the source in terms of writing style, so much so that it actually sates your craving for a next installment of the real property.

I've found a couple Haruhi Suzumiya fanfics that I've truly adored, to the point where I no longer care if Nagaru Tanigawa ends the series or not because some of these serve just as well for an ending.

Also fanfiction dominates more things than people like to think. If you like the Star Wars extended universe, the more recent Wheel of Time books, the latest Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book, any Evangelion manga set in the "alternate universe" of the final episode, Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, hell ANY Marvel/DC Elseworld...you CAN like fanfiction because those things essentially ARE fanfiction that's been deemed good enough to be worth money.

It's mostly complete and utter crap written by people with the writing skills of a 2nd grader, or written by someone who desperately needs to see a psychologist. Or a judge. As for the good stuff, I just don't see the point in reading something that isn't even canon. They might be fun to write, but reading them just feels like a waste of time.

You know, at great risk of sending you the home of labyrinthine crossreferences, there is a page that has a collection of recommended fanfics.

TvTrope's Fanfic Recommendations Page [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanFicRecommendations]

This list has a few recommendations from others of what they think are some good fanfictions, including crossover fics. There is also a link to some recommended Mega Crossovers [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanficRecs/MegaCrossover] as well for crossovers of 3 or more series.

I was told about this listing in TvTropes because...well...the LAST name on the Authors section of the Mega Crossovers page might look familiar...

As long as it's not some fetish work or isn't a joke on the reader, It's aa pretty cool thing in my opinion

I am a little biased though (I wrote some fan-fic's for Tron and GhostBusters, big whoop.)

Dreadful, through-and-through.
You know, just for once I'd like someone to say that and have an avatar related to a work of fiction (or one I know of). It would save me so much time. Sadly, instead, I need to ask for a list of works of fiction you like so I can find a fic to prove you wrong.

I've skimmed through over a hundred fanfics and only once have I ever come across a good one; it was for Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Any chance you're a Firefly fan, Buffy fan or Doctor Who (Nu Who) fan? Because there's an oddly large amount of good ones for them out there, especially when you start doing crossovers between two or all of the three. If not, what works do you like?
Omg... my roommate and I just started watching Firefly two days ago - and it is my new favorite show of all time ever. There is just something about how it seamlessly blends various cultures, time periods, and technologies together that draws me to it. Now that I think about it, Avatar: The Last Airbender does a similar thing with various Eastern cultures. I guess I just like universes with well-developed settings. Any others you can recommend?

no. It will pollute my imagination. I can't have my perception of what i like cheapen by someone else. More or less i have my own fanfic in my head that i refuse to have corrupted by foreign sources.

edit: i think i misread you. If it is canon i can read it. :D
I think all well meaning fans have that same train of thought, yet if you think about it, most of the worst fanfiction comes from inexperienced writers handling characters that are established in the canon of series.

If you want to write fanfiction, go with an OC, or OC team, and maybe use established characters for a brief cameo.
yes best to not use any of the established characters. new characters set in the setting i might have a slight inkling of actually consider reading.

Fan-fiction is inherently bad for two reasons:

A.) It is a copy of an original work to some degree.

B.) It requires a level of pretentiousness that most young preteens and teenagers have but usually outgrow. When it doesn't... we... you know. To write fan-fiction. Unless you're doing it for kicks an giggles, but if your serious about it you have to be telling yourself at least on a subconscious level, "I'm better than the original author."
I don't agree. There are some aspects of a canon or even major characters that the game/movie/etc. will inevitably not explore. Alternatively, there are side characters who are interesting but whose personal stories are not well defined, or who don't get enough time in the story. Things like this are great fanfiction material, because you're not competing with the author; you're working alongside them.

I posted about an AU Bleach fic that was amazing. In case anyone was mildly interested, Here it is [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6637905/1/]. Damn thing nearly made me cry and probably would have done so without the use of copyrighted characters.
