Poll: Fanfiction: your opinions

So after sticking my big toe into the vast sea that is fanfiction I couldn't help but feel a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of it. Granted it is 99% poo but now and again one stumbles upon a nugget of gold. I'm not restricting it to anime/manga but tv shows, games, books, movies...thoughts?

I like it, but you do sometimes have to really trawl around to find the good ones. A good place to start is TVTropes fanfic recommendations page, then look at the favourite authors of the recommended writers. Usually they are all of quite a high quality.

But I'm biased, given that I'm a fanfiction writer myself.

Fanfiction ruins otherwise great anime/shows/games/etc.

I question how many writers of Kingdom Hearts fanfiction actually played the game.

I'm not going to tell anyone to stop doing it, but I think it's retarded. 99% is completely unreadable, worthless, irredeemable shit, and the effort that went into writing the stuff that's actually decent (assuming that it actually exists) could have gone into writing something actually original.

I never really cared about fan fiction, as it is typically wish fulfillment for its author or pornographic, and it's not even GOOD at either of those things.

There's a lot of good stuff on the internet, you just need to know where to find it.

For what it's worth, while I haven't been on there in years, the Iron Kingdoms forums had some of the most amazing fan fiction I've ever seen, with quite a lot of it being done by professional writers for other games. I think starting there has made me slightly less scared of trying new fan fiction than people who started on Half Life or Harry Potter...

It's funny I agree, but as for a criticism of fan-fiction I don't think it really stands considering that I believe it was made by one of the nut-jobs off of SomethingAwful.

Anyway I'm more or less neutral towards fan-fiction, like everything else ever made ninety-percent of it is crap but there are worthwhile works left in the ten percent.

It's a funny one, rather a lot like fan art.

It's worth trawling through the many, many layers of long dead faecal matter and rubbish because every now and again, compressed between the many strata, you find a diamond.

Also, sometimes it's so bad you can't help but read on, like a rabbit caught in headlights can't move.

I think this just about sums it up. I've been a casual trawler for years, and most of the stuff floating around out there is comparable to My Immortal in terms of being anywhere close to good, but it's worth it if you can find a good one, and they do exist, somewhere in the wilderness.

It's such a shame you have to wade through so much shit to find a diamond.

O.T. I think that looking for good fanfiction is like searching for something good in a sewage treatment plant, occasionally you'll find something but you'll have spent ages searching through the mires of Slash fiction (sewage) that it feels dirty by association.
