I don't think it can recover after My Immortal.

The same way the world would find it difficult to recover from nuclear war.

Just....read it. Read it and cry tears of pain for the death of intelligence.

I never liked fanfiction much anyway, it seems pointless, it's not that creative, and if the makers of the work hire former fanfiction writers or it's remade by them, they end up totally fucking up the series.
I literally had to stop. Half a paragraph in I experienced what i believe is known as the "2 Girls, 1 Cup" phenomenon. When something is truly too horrific to continue to watch/read.

As for fanfiction as a whole, I agree almost completely with the first post. 99% of it is 'My Immortal' equivalent, but every once and a while, the shining nugget of gold is expunged from the colon that is Fanfiction.

Fanfiction is a good exercise for ensuring you are good at keeping a character's characterisation.

It's also useful for when you have an idea for say a character but don't have a world built around them yet. So it's great to throw them into an established world, against established characters, and see what your character can bring to the table.

So as a writer, yes, fanfiction can be a useful tool to actually use and partake in, although I wouldn't post any of it up publicly.

As for reading...yes, you can get some nuggets of pure gold. These ones are awesomely crafted, and the writers have taken a world and just made it brilliant, made it into their own.
