My opinion on fanfiction?

Well, it can be good once in a blue moon, if done correctly...

However, like every other brand of media ever, most of it is complete, and utter, worthless, crap.

I read that horrendous piece of garbage, laughing every other sentence. It was hilarious, and so bad, that the other half of the time that wasn't spent laughing I was banging my head against my desk because of the sheer stupidity and canon defilement.

Sturgeon's Law definitely applies to fanfiction. And trying to find a decent one is like trying to find a piece of hay in a needle stack of poisoned needles underwater and on fire. There are a few good fanfiction writers out there, but they are few in far between. And don't even get me started on the Mary Sue Author Insert characters that stink up fanfiction like a wet dog.

One of the worst parts of fanfiction is that some of the authors get published. One author got a frigging six book or so deal. And you could qualify the Twilight series as fanfiction, considering how it's pretty much My Immortal with better spelling and....somewhat better grammar. Then there's also the fact that somehow fanfiction authors think crossovers are a good idea, and after trolling through FanFiction.net, you couldn't step two feet without finding something crossed over with say Naruto or Kingdom Hearts.

Ah well. It's the Internet. 99% of everything is a turd. *shrugs* But at least that one gold story you find can end up being fun. And let's not forget that the low level of fanfiction talent did bring us Half-Life: Full Life Consequences.

I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this analogy, but reading fanfiction is like playing find the gold nugget in the shit pile. 99.99% of it is nightmare fuel, however, on the rare occasions I stumble upon a good one, It's typically very enjoyable.

I don't doubt the existance of good fanfiction, but I've never seen any, unfortunatley treat fanfiction as a means to sexually objectify a well liked fictional character into apeasing what ever their strange little minds desire. If your going to do that please, PLEASE keep it off the internet.

I don't care for it. It seems to be for people who want to write, but are too lazy to come up with their own settings, characters, or original plotlines. Most of the just serve to pair up character x with character y in some sort of fantasy romance/dream team scenario anyway.

The whole reason I don't like fanfiction or when someone else takes over a story is because the story that the author told in it's final form is the absolute story.

I'm a bit of a purist that way :p

Well, I used to hate it, then I found out that these modern marvels are considered fan-fiction:

She also has MGS 1 and 2, portable ops, and she's currently working on persona 4.

The same way the world would find it difficult to recover from nuclear war.

Just....read it. Read it and cry tears of pain for the death of intelligence.

I never liked fanfiction much anyway, it seems pointless, it's not that creative, and if the makers of the work hire former fanfiction writers or it's remade by them, they end up totally fucking up the series.

I don't hate fan fiction, it's just that so much of it really, really does suck.
I think this just about sums it up. I've been a casual trawler for years, and most of the stuff floating around out there is comparable to My Immortal in terms of being anywhere close to good, but it's worth it if you can find a good one, and they do exist, somewhere in the wilderness.

It's such a shame you have to wade through so much shit to find a diamond.

That is all that needs to be said. And Furburt beat me to it.

Oh heck, I remember reading that on ff.net absolutely ages ago. And weeping in agony.

There is so much rubbish in the fan fiction world, but like the OP said, occasionally, there is that good piece that I enjoy reading time and again. It fits the story, makes sense, and most importantly, the author actually knows how to spell. I delve into a few different areas, mainly video game fiction, and avoid any and all summaries that state "rate, pls."
Take it from a regular on FFNet. My Immortal is a confirmed trollfic.

I treat it like I treat most things. Most of it is ok, some of it is good and some of it should just be fired into the sun...

Hilarious. This is amazing.

OT: It all depends on the writer, good writer can make a good fan fiction I guess...

The serious kind sucks hard. The trying to be funny kind fails at doing so. The kind that continues on a game or anime's plot ruins it. The only exception was the absolutely brilliant squirrlking fan-fictions ('cause I have time to say it all). The Half-Life: Full Life Consequences saga was so freaking awesome, especially in machinima form. Other than that, utter crap. Not another good one in the bunch.

Where's the "Sturgeon's Law" option? 90%[footnote]Probably actually closer to 99%, but hey, let's be optimistic[/footnote] of it is crap, but some of it's pretty damn good.

Lol, Fanfiction is for fanboys/fangirls. If they like it, then they can keep making them. Honestly I don't care, just don't expect me to enjoy it.

I enjoy fanfics when I don't take them seriously; Half-Life: Full-Life Consequences is a clear example of this.

But I can't take fanfics seriously, because the only people who write them are those who can't be fucked to develop their own original characters, and are thus shit (especially when a fanfic character has a completely different personality to that of his/her canon version).

Alright, I'll try to stay calm here...

Ahem...

WRITE SOMETHING ORIGINAL YOU IGNORANT FOOLS!!!

The only excuse for writing fan fiction of any kind is as a tool to learn the writing process when you're in secondary school. Once you're an undergrad or above you need to start writing original stories if you ever want to be an actual writer and not just some idiot without an original, thoughtful bone in their body.

Oh I guess the other excuse is to write your own porn, but I don't even need to criticize that.

I've not had much experience with fanfic but as advised in the second post I've just scoured through My Immortal. It's so ridiculously bad that if ANYONE hasn't read it read it and cry tears of laughter. I don't know why all fanfic has to turn into the authors personal erotic fantasy...
