I love both. Fantasy has that lovable edge while sci-fi just gives this amazing feeling of exploration and wonder that just cannot be matched by fantasy (close though).

I enjoy both for what they are, though I'm much more of a science fiction man

However, I do enjoy the occasional science fantasy (The Stand comes to mind)...

I've read all of Feist's work bar Rage of a mad god. They're okay, but there's often far too much of the whole 'We do this for the greater good' bullshit. And even then, all of his cavalry AND infantry only had chainmail.

I'll take any genre, including Girl Vampire Erotica and My Life In the Fashion Industry, if it's thoughtful, engaging, and revealing. I.e., well-written.

I can't remember the last time I read a well-written science fiction or fantasy story post-1958.

Except for the stuff I write. Which I don't finish, because I already know how it ends in my head.

Too bad for you people. Too, too bad.

I love sci-fi and Fantasy but i dont like the thought of the two together
sci-fi makes you hopeful that something like that could happen and fantasy causes you to just lose yourself.

My preference is with Sci-Fi, but depending on how well your ale to meld the supernatural with the advanced, Science Fantasy can turn out to be pretty good, too.

*George Lucas and Some Guy collide at film college and mix up their scripts*
Some Guy: You got Sci Fi in my Fantasy!
George Lucas: You got Fantasy in my Sci Fi!
*Both look around nervously*
*Gunshots ring out*
*George Lucas runs away cackling*

Just thought I'd attempt to make you all laugh. :)

I am a 65-35% guy, 65% Sci-fi and 35% Fantasy.

In my world there exists no books in the fantasy genre able to mach up to "Dune" by Frank Herbert and "Exession" and "The Player Of Games" by Iain M. Banks.

I think it is ok to combine them sometimes...

Dune is nice, but I found it too...silly, with the whole 'One-planet-is-key-to-the-empire' and the prophetic superhumans. Oh, and his warfare is a bit odd.

I love fantasy, because it tends to incorporate a greater level of depth into it's universes. That said, magic is it's own technology. Anywhere that magic has been turned into an industry makes for great storytelling.
Sci-fi can have it's own depth.

For instance, the manual for the PC/Sega CD game Microcosm..

it's actually one of the most hilarious things I've ever witnessed.

about 25 pages of story, an extensive list of planets, their populations, their geological make-up, their economic status, their relation to the various powerbases..

What is the game? You play a tiny person swimming through a person's body killing robot aliens.

deeeeep. :p

They could be combined satisfactorily (I myself have a huge stiffy for the Dark Tower series, and of course Star Wars), but if I have to choose, I prefer well-written science fiction.

it doesnt matter as long as its done well. there are ninjas in both. wizards are (99%) exclusive to fantasy, but cyborgs (99%) exclusive to sci-fi. i have seem some EXTREMELY corny combinations, but there are good ones too. its all about the quality of the writing.

Best of both worlds.

Read or Die, a recent anime OVA was great for this.

Also World of Warcraft has elements of Steampunk, scifi and fantasy in one great combo.

I voted Fantasy. I'm not sure what exactly, but there's just something about it that I prefer over Sci Fi. Truly anything can be done with Fantasy, whereas it's more difficult to do some things with Sci Fi, I think. Although the glut of Tolkien-esque, elves & orcs style Fantasy is wearisome. I'd love to see more unconventional stuff like Exalted [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exalted].
