Cool post man. Looks like you put a good deal of effort into it.

I can't say I remember much of the 90's, having been born in the middle of it, but as for what genre defines the 90's the most, I'd say Pop Punk. To me just about every Offspring, Green Day, Blink and Pennywise song and music video seems to totally represent that period and the attitudes of its generation. Someone says 90's and I immediately think of something like the music video for Longview with Billie Joe sitting on his ass doing nothing all day.

As for personal preference I'm gonna go with Grunge. Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger, AIC's Dirt, Smashing Pumpkins Gish (if that counts, I still dunno what the hell they are exactly), and a ton of others, bloody timeless.
Most people lump Smashing Pumpkins in Grunge, but they are not...

I would say Alternative Rock, with a Heavy Inspiration of Shoegaze and Noise Rock. Billy Corgan is even appearing in the new Shoegaze documentary "Beautiful Noise", so It's no secret the smashing pumpkins take at lot of cues from MBV, and various other bands like them.

Also, it was funded, i'm getting the DVD in December.

Thank you for the feedback, i'm really happy that some appreciate the work I put into this thread, as i'm very passionate about music in general. I could say it pretty much saved my life, when i was at my most lowest.

Really hard to say, I'm not really into any of those kinds of music, though I like some music that sounds a little like grunge (also I like Nirvana), some of what I like sounds a little like nu-metal (though defined as a different genre) and I love punk rock (which is somewhat related to pop punk). I'll have to go with pop punk because I've used to be a fan of The Offspring when I was younger I guess.

Also, you forgot the glory that is the alternative one-hit-wonders! Seriously, how many of you remember anything from:

Live
Dam at Otter Creek, Iris, I Alone, Selling The Drama, Gas Head Goes West, Lakini's Juice ... ... Shall I continue? :)
Huh. Got me there. Though I'm surprised you didn't mention the only one I know, "Lightning Crashes." :p

Also Tie-Die, and Joe Bloggs Jumpers...

Though they can keep the Hi-Tech tracksuits, Bucket Hats, and Puffer jackets, that make you look fat.

I'll check out stoner rock
If you do, check out Clutch, they have a wide verity of styles & plenty of albums to find something to like. Oh I almost forgot The Sword they fucking rock.

OT: I have to go with grunge too, but more Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mad Season & Temple of the Dog than Nirvana & Pearl Jam & all the others.

I'd have to go with pop punk, that was my first major music interest. I can't remember the first tape I bought, but it was definitely some kind of pop punk sound that my parents hated. I kind of lost touch with it over the years, I guess maybe because a lot of what I used to listen to was very high school oriented, and then just didn't feel it was worth the effort to track down new stuff. Heh, from there I moved on to heavier stuff, grunge (Soundgarden, Nirvana, etc) being predominant.

A fantastic OP.

I love this period, reminds me of high school (left in 96). I guess I have to go grunge. There were so many good bands.

Stone temple pilots, soundgarden, faith no more, deftones, fun loving criminals, godsmack, alice in chains, biohazard. Ther was just so much going on. It didnt run out of steam in the 90s. Even towards the end you had bands Like Saves the Day trying new things.

What does this decade have to offer? The pretentious new folk stuff going on in the south (Mumford and Sons, Im looking at you), dub step and rappers still talking about how much money they have and what cars theyre driving... How droll.

Country
United States
Denver Colorado in the 1990's has my personal favorite alternative music scene that is still going strong even to this day. 16 Horsepower, Jay Munly, The Denver Gentlemen, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Tarantella, Wovenhand, Lilium, Reverend Glasseye, DeVotchKa, and that's really just for their alternative country/cabaret scene, I'm sure they've got a bustling punk/rock/metal/hip hop scene as well. I really don't want to come across as a hipster for ignoring the more culturally relevant scenes from that decade, but considering so many people say "I listen to everything except country" (exempting Johnny Cash) I think this is a criminally underrated and overlooked scene that contains so many good bands that take on the Americana/country sound but make it the antithesis of the crap you hear on the radio.

I don't know.
I hit my teens in the height of nu-metal, so that is what I remember 2001-2003/4 so it didn't define 90's rock in any way, not really picking up the pace until 2000ish.
Looking back, it was all about britpop and grunge, everything else was a bit too shortlived to really feel like it defined the decade.

What no love for Husker Du and the Pixies?

I never really pinned myself to one scene I was mainly into grunge but i dabbled with brit pop and nu metal and a bit of pop punk whatever sounded good.
