Drums, drums, drums and drums again.

Purely because drums keep the rhythm of the song, together with bass guitar. But drums just are more awesome.

To play: trumpet.
To hear: cello.
In most bands: drums.
Funny answer: nothing comes to mind except for something that would surely get me put on probation.

Guitar.

Drums and bass are more complementary instruments, in my opinion; they're vital for a band to have, but they can't really stand on their own. They sort of lack the flexibility and authority that vocals and guitars have, I guess. Some people see the whole behind-the-scenes thing as a pro rather than a con, but I guess I just prefer the forefront instruments. Piano would be my second choice.
I disagree, In Meshuggah Drums are the forefront of the band, almost everything seems to be based around Thomas Haake double bass drums, and probably same thing with Slayer(forgot the drummers name, but he was important in the development of double base), not too mention Drums are an extremely important instrument in Death Metal.
Well, Meshuggah is one band, and an experimental one at that. It does depend on the music in question, but in general, drums and bass tend to have more supporting roles.

And I definitely didn't say that drums weren't important. I'm saying that a song consisting of nothing but a drumbeat probably wouldn't be as good as a song consisting of nothing but guitar or piano. Drums are important, but they lose some practicality when you're not in a band, and it can be the same with bass guitar. That is why I prefer guitar and piano; they can have a greater command over a song, and thus have a bit more versatility.

I guess if you are just talking about the standard band setup, its like asking which is your favourite part of a car: the motor, the wheels or the chassis. Its sortof pointless because they all sortof work together and, while possibly impressive in their ownright, dont really work on their own.

Bass. Although I also play the guitar a lot and a bit of drumming, bass is my first love. Besides, a great bass player can really make a band stand out, way more than a great guitarist.

I play guitar and trombone. Those are my two favorite instruments. Guitars because of the wide range of sounds they can make. I mean, no two people play the guitar the same way. I find it incredible that Stevie Ray Vaughan and Tom Morello are playing the same instrument. There's metal, blues, rock, country, and it's all the same instrument that makes all of those sounds.

And the trombone for ska music. The trumpet is good, but listen to She Has a Girlfriend Now by Reel Big Fish. That trombone solo is insane.

I'm a guitarist, violinist and will become a singer, but honestly? I can't choose. I love music so damn much, and every instrument has such a big role. I love guitar solos and riffs, but I also love a good singing voice and growling, or heavy bass lines, or a pounding drum beat.

Awww, you can't beat a good bass solo. For me it would be the bass, because it's so underused. For example the intro to N.I.B by Black Sabbath is so great!
