Played them all, loved them all. MGS3: Subsistence is IMO the best. Great story, great gameplay, great music, epic sense of humor. Also, crab battle.

MGS3: Snake Eater will alwys be my favourite Metal Gear title. Just the epic story, coupled with (in my opinion) the best cast of characters from the series make it stand out from the others. Also, it has Big Boss/ Naked Snake in it, the coolest of all the Snakes.

MGS4 was probably my favourite.... followed closely by MGS3... and then MGS2 Substance

MGS3 was the first one I played so perhaps that has the nostalgia tint that many other gamers see on MGS1 but I dunno. I was probably my favourite game of that generation.

MGS4 is clearly the best graphic wise... I doubt anyone can argue with that.
But I think the change in camera view was a bit of a bad Idea. Sure it worked PERFECTLY but so did the previous camera system. that may have not sat well with some fans. And Also I felt the story was the best, dispite the fact there was no specific Metal Gear that had to be stopped. It did drag on a bit at the end though, tying up all the lose ends. But that was kinda nessecary.

But on the other hand there are a lot of ways that make me prefer MGS3 and a lot of other ways that make me prefer 4... I really can't decide...
I prefer Big Boss/Naked Snake as a playable character though

Metal Gear Solid 2 definitely. It was well refined, smooth, some other gushy words. The stealth wasn't quite so sensitive still though, you could sneak around quick and efficiently. The guns were all wonderful, and best of all you didn't need to delve into your stupid backpack every time you needed a different item. Raiden took a bit of getting used to but I found him to be quite lovable. The characterization was wonderful, getting a distinct feeling from every character and not feeling like the bosses you ran into were just themed sacks of meat due to how much information they gave you about Dead Cell, giving them an actual sense of purpose in being there.

I started with the original MG on the NES eons ago and I found it boring and frustrating, glad they stuck with it though, the MGS titles are all pretty solid games. I'd have to say Snake Eater was by far my favorite though. I love the cold war era political intrigue, the retro charm of everything, and it had by far the coolest boss fights.

The original metal gear solid was great. They really did balance the storyline with the gameplay and the boss battles rank as the best in the series (who could not forget that psycho mantis controlller switching battle) my only complaint is that it is far too short and it can be completed in around 4 or 5 hours or so that alone makes it not my favourite. I also like the metal gear solid remake for the gamecube (the twin snakes).

I thought metal gear soild 2 was a tad mediocre in my opinion. the locations, characters, story and overall gameplay just wasn't up the scratch. Though i did like the boss battles and the beginning part on the frieghter when you play as snake, also... i need sissors 61.

Now metal gear solid 3 was a whole different beast from mgs 2. It introduced so many great gameplay concepts to the series such as eating, camoflage, healing wounds ect and with that made the whole experience much more lifelike and belivable. the story wasn't too over the top (like mgs 2 and to some degree mgs 4) and the characters oozed personality and the game made you feel about them. Overall it's my favourite mgs and hell one of my favourite games of all time (i might get a ps2 again just to play it)and may i mention it has the most kick ass theme song ever!

now...moving on to metal gear solid 4 and the fact it seemed more of a action game than a stealth game (you could do the whole game going all guns blazing with no problem at all on most difficulties) which wasn't a huge problem (as you could choose how to approach a situation) but it did let it down a bit. The story was very confusing but to give it credit it did tie up alot of loose ends (like the origin of the whole stupid ocelot arm thing in mgs 2) The cutscenes where top nouch ( i actually wished their was more of them because they were so good) The bosses where proberly the worse in the series (making the fights more frustrating than fun to take down) But the variety of locations and the fact it was pretty lengthy made up for the games shortcomings. Overall a very decent mgs experience (but in no way as ground breaking as mgs 3) but defiently worth buying a ps3 for as it is worth experiencing at least once (just play the first three first so you get a good idea of the story).

Metal Gear Solid had the most fun gameplay for me. In MGS2 you had to find the radar node things, plus Raiden was a douche. In MGS3 you didn't have that active radar, and it was a huge crutch for me, having played MGS1 first.

My hierarchy is MGS1 > MGS3 > MGS2. I haven't played any of the others.

Subsistence was the best. In fact, the original kind of ruined it, because I'd seen it all by the time it got a functioning camera. The problem with metal gear solid is there always something that goes wrong...
Metal gear solid 1 aged horribly, and threw out most of the great stealth in the second half, which was pretty lacking compared to the first. sons of 2 had the most batshit insane third act I've ever seen. 3 had a godawful camera that wouldn't let you see 10 feet in front of you and lots of wide open areas to abuse that. Also, changing camo every 6 seconds was a pain. Not a huge issue though. 4 had the tightest gameplay, the best boss fights, but way, way, way too many cutscenes, and not enough gameplay segments. I wouldn't have minded all the cutscenes if there was an appropriate number of levels to make up for it, but there was so little to do, it was pretty disappointing. That said, I still hugely enjoyed it.

Well, MGS 4 was the worst, and that was still a really great game. I always enjoyed 2 the best for some reason - I just really loved the story, and I always thought the "Plant" was a fantastic environment. Then again, MGS 1 and 3 are both amazing games, and I can really go back to any of the games in the MGS series and enjoy them all immensely.

Same here, almost exactly. I found the original MG to be a pain in the ass, but MGS is probably one of my favorite games ever, and MGS3 managed to top it by just a little bit. The second one is pretty good too, the philosophy behind the game is pretty deep as well.

MGS4, simply because it's the second MGS game I ever completed and the first I actually own.
Finished 3 but I didn't like the stamina system. MGS4 was a lot better with it's stamina system because it was a lot easier to fix without cheating(EZ gun in MGS3).

4 is the only one I've played, and therefore the answer to both questions.
Workin my way through 3 though.

My favorite would have to be Metal Gear Solid. I've beaten that game literally over 60 times and it just never ever gets old. MGS2 was overall a very good game, but i didn't really care for any of the boss fights. MGS3 was also very good. I thought the camo/food/cure system was a unique idea and the bosses were for the most part really good. The only thing i didn't care for was the story, i just couldn't get into it for some reason. MGS4 didn't exactly live up to my expectations, but i still think it's a very good game. You can essentially run n'gun the game on most difficulties(which is fixed by playing on The Boss Extreme), you find healing items a bit too often, and i thought the idea that you can buy weapons and ammo at any point in the game made it a bit too easy. But it's still a lot of fun, and I thought it was a great game. There's one game i noticed was missing from the list(or maybe it wasn't, I'm not too sure now) and that game would be Metal Gear Solid on the Gameboy Color.
