Well I see I'm the only one to choose high elf so far, but I stick by it.
My best character in that game was a high elf pure-mage.
He never died, never wore armor, only used staffs, and killed everything all the time everywhere. Totally unkillable. I ate that game for breakfast with that character. Plus he was tall, like me, so that helped me relate a little more. But seriously: Killed everything. I rarely got hit.
What build/spells/attributes did you focus on?
I have been wanting to make a pure mage but I'm not sure which magic is the most effective for combat.
Alchemy breaks the game, for one.
You want to make ass-loads of money and level like crazy? Alchemy.
Don't make it a main skill, though. You'll level way too fast. Choose something else, like Athletics or Acrobatics or something. Then walk into every bar or inn you come across, buy every piece of food, make an ass-load of potions, and sell them all back. Skill up, money up, everyone's happy. Rinse and repeat. As you get better, you'll make better potions, which means more money for the same work. Then you'll be able to make health and mana potions from one ingredient, which means that you can drink a ton and be healed like crazy. It's awesome.
For combat, I used a few spells. Multiple targets? Enrage and invisibility in one spell.
They both go off at the same time, with my invisibility lasting as long as the enrage spell. The enraged dude attacks the other guy while I go jump to a safe place and watch. Spell wears off and not everyone is dead? Cast it again. Eventually, when I was strong enough, I had the spell as an area effect spell. It was called 'shut up and dance', and everyone in a radius was enraged while I stood invisible and watched them slaughter each other. It was awesome.
Also: One second paralyze spells. Even if it's for one second, they
have to fall down and get back up. Cast that for very low mana, hit them with fireballs and whatever else, hit them with paralyze when they get back up again. Rinse and repeat. If you want to use weapons, put that on a bow. 1 second paralyze on strike. They'll never reach you.
Also: damage strength. Use that instead of the fire attacks when using the paralyze spell, and eventually they won't be able to move
at all. Then you can pick them off at your leisure.
Summoning works well to make fodder if you're being mobbed, but I otherwise never used it.
Invisibility is essential (Instant 'everyone give me a break' mode in battle').
Telekinesis is awesome for theft, useless for everything else.
Enchant all your clothes and whatever with shield. I had practically rags as clothes, and I had the full 85 protection.
Have a water walking spell ready to cast on your horse. The horse is faster then you are, and running on the water is safer then the forest.
And 'weakness to' spells combined with whatever they are now weak to work wonders as well.
And spell absorption is a must against mages, as is 'drain magic'.
Try those, get back to me.
