So I'm guessing all of you know about the archetypes in MMOs, and how lots of them can be put into fighting games. I was wondering, do you choose characters based on how they look, act, or if you just wanna win? Me personally I like the Mix-it-up guy but if I'm feeling boring then the game's main character or most basic fighter. I try to play with everyone to experience the full game but I don't do competitive so its Mix-it-up or the RyuandKen.

I'm not going to put examples from King of Fighters because I feel that it and Street Fighter shouldn't be in the same sentence. Except for that one time.

RyuandKen: Main characters in the game or the beginner/basic character.
Mario/Luigi in SSBM, or well, Ryu and Ken.

Glass Cannon: Good Damage but crappy defense
Characters like Lucario from SSBB, C. Viper(boxer) from SF.

Mighty Glacier: Powerful but slow.
Character like Ganondorf from SSBM, Akuma from SF.

Cheap Ass Game Breaker: Guy who's so strong that anyone can win with him.
Characters like Metaknight in SSBB, and Sagat in SF.

BumbleBee: Fast and weak character.
Somic in SSBB, or the Falcon himself. Aguably Rufus in SF or even Chun-li.

Joke Character: Underpowered funny guy.
Wario from SSBM and Dan Hibiki.

Mix-it-up Guy: Guy who's unpredictable in his attacks.
characters like Olimar in SSBB, and Blanka from SF. Sometimes the drunken fist guy in a few fighting games. Or guys that have backwards attacks (you know what I mean)

Homage Character/Personal Idol: Character from a Really old game or from a different series, in-joke between fans and developers.
Snake, Sonic, Game and Watch, Pit, Ice Climber (for the Old School.). Dan Hibiki, based off Robert somewhat form Art of Fighting Also the obligatory Bruce Lee character (Fei-long for isntance)
Also if you just love that guy/girl for your own reasons, since there are only 8 choices.

Always been a fan of the RyuandKen archetype. I vary a lot in my choices when it comes to fighting games, but at the end of the day, I never stray far from Mario or Ryu.

I love my Zangief and Tager glaciers but nothing beats the responses you get when you rock someone with Dan.

Slow but powerful. Mewtwo in SSBM was pretty slow but had good attacks. Its been years since ive played it but im pretty sure thats how he was. Plus it was just cool to play as one of the most badass pokemon, no matter how nerdy that makes me.

I still think Vader should have been put into SSBB somehow. Just think about it... Force choking Mario...

I prefer the balanced characters. That's what Link is in SSBB, right? He seems a good all-around character to play as.

Depends. Sometimes I'll go for the Mighty Glacier, as long as they aren't grapplers (who I suck with); main examples being Fiona from Arcana Heart or Ike from SSBB.

Really, it's hard for me to generalize, except that my favorite characters tend to have long range (Fiona, Axl Low, Raphael, Rider, Kohaku...). I think I'll generalize that as Glass Cannon, since none of those have great defense.

Mixup is pretty fun, too. Zooming all over the stage with Chipp Zanuff, or Lilica, or Rider, or using the Tempestas arcana...

I like toon Link quite a bit. He's a bit weaker than normal Link, but faster. I guess that counts as Bumblebee?

EDIT: I like the Mix-it-up guy a lot, too. I just like to dodge around my opponent to mess with them.

Brian from Tekken... just Brian all the way! :D

Also, since when is Snake overpowered? Have you played as Snake? Most of his attacks involve the enemy being in exactly the right place for a very short window of time (grenades, mines) basically useless... certainly the mines, the grenades come in 3s so thats okay.

Have you seen his "jumping downward-A" attack? God damn that move, and it can keep on getting you!!! D:<

Then again I really dont like LoZ... like at all.

Snake...? SNAKE....?! SNAAAAAAAAKE!!! :D

EDIT: Dun-dun-dundahdun... dun-dun-dun! :D

I switch between Glass Cannon, Mighty Glacier, and Bumblebee. I like characters that have definite strengths, but also balancing weaknesses. It's especially satisfying to find ways around those weaknesses to make a devastating fighter.

I don't really like Mario/Ryu and Ken characters, because they're rather dull in their complete balance, but game breakers are worse, as they're just no fun for anybody.

OK, since no one is helping (not being a jerk) im going to generalize as... bumblebee, which now that I think about it makes sense, neither of their attacks do a huge amount of damage, it only really adds up... whatever, at least the aren't cheap as hell like hakumen or (arguably) v-13-/nu
