For me, it's a tie between Tekken 3 and Smash Bros. Melee

I tend to favor the more non-traditional fighters. The Tekken series being my exception.

Honorable mentions, Bushido Blade 1 & 2 and Power Stone 1 & 2.

My favorites in order:

1) Dissidia: Final Fantasy- This game is ever final fantasy fans dream and much much more. It went beyond being a simple gimmick game and became a really kick ass fighter with really well balanced gameplay and characters. The RPG system to it all is really deep and is a fundamental aspect of the game and not tacked on. Fucking fantastic fighter, big arenas, awesome moves, unique combat system, it's just...wow.

2) Guilty Gear XXAC+: Best 2d fighting game EVAR. Fast and fun combat which has a lot of depth to it but is still rather simplistic at the same time. Really easy to get into and the wide cast of characters will mean a lot of play time sunk into it. Not to mention KICK ASS music...like seriously the music kicks more ass than a drunken Friday night at an Irish tavern.

3) Blazblue: Same reasons as Guilty Gear.

4) Soul Calibur: Solid fighting mechanics, a little frustrating to get into but ultimately rewarding. Good character roster and probably one of the only 3d fighters I care for.

5) Killer Instinct: It was my first love and it's still fun after all these years. It was like Mortal Kombat but ya know....GOOD.

Every other fighter I've played doesn't match up to these big boys or I haven't played them yet. I have yet to try a bunch of them and am interested in Tatsunoku Vs Capcom and Fate/ Unlimited Codes but lack a Wii and I don't know if I wanna spend 30 bucks on Fate yet.

My favorite would have to be the Super Smash Brother series. It's one of the few fighting games where it seems to force a sense of skill on the player rather than just basic button mashing. Some people may still disagree with me I'm sure but honestly, the timing you need and knowledge of your own attacks is needed in order to make sure you can stay on the platform. Also, it doesn't seem to rely on the player knowing every secret key combo in the book in order to win.

I prefer Tekken to Street Fighter (never was a fan of the 2d sprites - not even Mortal Combat), but my fave fighting game had to be Def Jam FFNY.

Well, that seems a bit biased don't you think? Only two polls for a Hell of a lot of Fighting games? Right.
Never liked any fighting game though.....

I'm so happy KI already got mentioned twice before I showed up. That's still my favorite out of the ones from that era.

Out of the two that actually managed to get into the poll before accidental submission, SF by far. I could just never get into Tekken.

I've probably spent the most time overall playing SSBM/SSBB, though, and an honorable mention goes for the earlier Soul Calibur games, even though I wasn't particularly good at them.

Super Smash Bros Brawl. I like the ability to move around in a big environment instead of just on a flat plane. I also like that the abilities are simple and not stupidly complex.

I never played BlazBlue and I dislike the rest you mentioned. I'm a Mortal Kombat fan.. well, I was. I used to love Killer Instinct as well way back when.

Out of the options you've given Tekken is my favorite, specifically Tekken 3. However at the moment my favorite fighting game is BlazBlue

Guilty Gear and its successor BlazBlue: :3 apart from the characters, being both interesting and diverse, and the sound track, which i have select cuts of in my MP3 play when i go for walks ( mostly Guilty Gear XX and Overture, look of Overtures Diva and The Man for some Epic win) but the story, BlazBlue is better about this then GG, as the ARCADE MODE gave me just enough to make me want to play the story mode, well more, was gonna anyway, ( also, i like how that even thought BlazBlue is the successor of GG, NO ONE PLAYS LIKE ANYONE FROM GUILTY GEAR, there all fresh feeling game play wise, even if the designs lean more toward one character being anothers counter part, EI Ragna = Sol in effect

next is Killer Instinct: this game was and still is, AWSOME, and before the F'ed it all up in 2/gold had the BEST combo system in a game EVER, side name me another fighter where you can have a ninja, fight a were wolf, dinosaur, an ice alien, living fire, a skeleton, robot, an indian and a demon ( or what ever Eyedol is )in the same line up, if you haven't played it, you need to.

and for the guilty pleasure fighter, Bloody Roar 3, a 3D fighter, and button masher basicly, where you can turn into a were-beast mid fight for more damage an some health regen, not the best fighter out there, in game play or story, but since i can rip out throuts mid mate in were form, it gets my vote, sides, its got a killer were-bunny named Alice, i defire you to come up with something as awsome as that XD

as for the options on the poll ... tekken is a button masher to me :p and is as over hyped as Street Fighter, and i could never get into Mortal Kobmat, tryed a few times, but never got me, Soul Calibur *sighs* yeah, thats fun an all, but the sound effect an the narrator being all ' its the most epic thing ever' for every fight, got on my nerves after awhile,

Tekken, totally. I've played it since it first came out on the PSX, and i'll continue to buy them until i die.

Never really got into the whole Street Fighter phase. Didn't play it in arcades nor on any console, except for my PSP whilst on the toilet.

I guess, if i had to sum the two of them up (in really, really broad strokes) that Tekken is for the 'casual/hardcore' gamers, whilst Street Fighter is for the 'hardcore/nostalgia' gamers.

Dunno about Guilty Gear or DOA or any other fighter.

All right, all right. You know it's most likely gonna be a three-parter, right?

Not often I find someone here who knows about that game. I mean hell, even I barely know what it is, beyond "Touhou fighting game."

...where might I find it, incidentally?

Yes it is. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying through their teeth.

No idea. I got it a while ago, and I'm not actually sure if they're selling it anymore.
