I hate most JRPGs, particularly new ones, because with this generation of technology, we should be able to move past turn-based combat. We can go to fucking space for Christ's sake! However, there are a few exceptions to my hatred of JRPGs. The Pokémon series, Final Fantasy II, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound. Oddly enough, all of these games had turn-based combat, but they do such smart things in other regards that I end up forgiving them for it. Pokémon's combat was fun because of the infinite number of ways that an encounter could be played out, due to the vast number of Pokémon and attacks that could be learned. Final Fantasy II boggles my mind as to why I enjoyed it. It's got the same combat that the first had, which I hated. It's a grindfest. I just don't get it, but for some reason I liked it. No idea why. Chrono Trigger never felt like turn-based because of the way battles were shown, and because of the pressure of time along with the recharging of your moves. you were always setting up your next attack, and you were never just waiting for your opponent's turn to be over. Earthbound is hilarious, especially to an American who isn't too crazy about America. Also, the fact that once you level high enough you can skip battles altogether was really nice to me. I started playing through Earthbound again today, and I decided to ask what your favorite old-school JRPG is. If it's not in the poll, you can write it in yourself, but please don't whine about it.

Well, you currently have one option, which just happens to be the option I would have voted on. So, that one

Tales of Symphonia.

Which also happens to be my favorite (non-visual novel) game of all time.

Much better. I voted Suikoden 2, though if I felt like thinking about it more I'm sure I would come up with something I liked more.

I'm not sure if it's my all time favourite, but then I'm not really sure what my all time favourite anything is, anyway I say Golden sun on the GBA.

I will have to agree with you. That game owns about 5 years of my life.

I... I think I'm in love.
Flattered, but my heart belongs to another. Currently, it's... *checks list* Raine. I suspect it'll belong to Presea after that.

Lol. It happens. Final Fantasy VII for me. It's the only one I've ever managed to get all of the way through.

Just one question: Where the hell is Final Fantasy VI? It's the best in the series. Excellent sprite and environment art that demonstrates the artistic merits of the 16-bit era, characters that are interesting without comically large swords, a brilliant atmosphere of steampunk, nature, and magic, all with the perfect color scheme? Don't forget one of the greatest villains in RPG history and mode 7 airships. And the opera scene, and the flashback scene while going to get the second airship, and the music, for science's sake. Genius, just genius.

Final Fantasy 6 isn't on that list.

You probably should have done the list by franchise.

Final Fantasy series
DQ series
Chrono series
Suikoden series
Breath of Fire series
Mother series
Mana series
Tales of series
SMT series (including personas)
Fire Emblem series
Disgaea series
Lufia series
Other

.. would be a long list I suppose.

I am in agreement to the N'th degree.

Anyways out of that list my choice is obviously Chrono Trigger. That and FF6 are to me the pinnacle of both Squares success and that of the 16-bit era RPG's. They still hold their own quite well even by today's standards.

Oh and balimuzz, when you refer to FF2, do you mean the FF2 for the SNES (which is actually 4) or the original FF2 for the NES that what included in the GBA Dawn of Souls game. I have heard you mention FF2 before but without true clarity. Either one you mention though I would have to agree, but I would further like to inquire about what you love about it. Just curious.

Personally I really loved Star Ocean 3 when I first played it. Granted that was a while ago, when I was replaying it recently I realized how bad the dialog etc. really was, but it still had a good story, and interesting gaming mechanics.

This is my #1 JRPG for all time with Tales of Vesperia in a close second.

Where's the SMT series? I'm gonna go with Persona 4. That game is just fantastic and renewed my hope in good JRPGs.

I was going to say Final Fantasy VII since I don't play too many JRPGs then I saw you all naming Tales of Symphonia and I was reminded of Tales of Phantasia. That game was great, specially for its time so, think I'll have to name Tales of Phantasia as mine.

Turn based is outdated? What the hell? Just because we have HD televisions doesn't mean every game should be action. It was never turn based because technical limitations made real time hard, but because RPGs never were about speed and reflexes. Strategic challenge hasn't suddenly become obsolete.
