Ok, please don't tear me to shreds because I make two threads both about magic in such a short amount of time - I promise this is wildly different from the other thread.
In short, the question is in the title - what is your favorite kind or school of magic? I'm generally thinking D&D, but final fantasy and oblivion is also good.
I'll sum up the ones D&D has, save the divine kinds
Abjuration - This kind of magic is often focused on protecting and dispelling negative spells and curses from other sources. Often comes in the form of barriers.
Evocation - This is where Fireball and other classic attack spells come from. Very often offensive spells (redundant statement is redundant
).
Illusion - Illusions can be used to mess with the enemy's head, sometimes even their memory. Makes them see things that are not there. Can be used to for example cloak a pit trap.
Conjuration - Creating or calling objects and creatures into this world to fight the enemy or protect you, or just give the party something to eat.
Divination - The art of spying through magic, basically, think crystal orbs and stuff like that. However, it can also be used to look through illusions. Few combat uses.
Enchantments - Enchantments affects the enemy by either allowing the caster to mentally dominate them, befriend them, but also paralyze, bind them or bless your allies.
Transmutation - Transmutation transforms and changes things, from turning that nasty +5 admantium sword into wood, purifying water, upping an ally's stats for a certain amount of time (or perhaps permanently, but be careful..), control weather and plants or grant someone infravision.
Necromancy - Most of us are familiar with necromancy - it concerns reanimating dead bodies, inflicting damage upon the living and stealing their life and essence in creative ways. It's a corrupting kind of magic that can be used for curses.
I'll go first. Evocation, conjuration, Enchantments, transmutation and necromancy
