I don't like the listed options. I'm gonna have to go with the school of Dark Magic from the Might & Magic series. Which has little to do with necromancy. Raising a slain enemy doesn't change their hostility towards you.

Dark Magic deals with things like Armageddon, a massive AOE damage attack (to which your own characters are NOT immune, so casting it can kill you as well); Pain Reflection, which rebounds physical damage taken; Finger of Death, which attempts to destroy an entity's soul but does no physical damage; Mass Curse, a large-scale enemy debuff; Day Of Protection, a spell which wards against numerous elemental damage types; Soul Drinker, a powerful ranged vampiric spell affecting multiple targets, and a slew of lesser damage spells.

Of the D&D variants, Necromancy or Divination. Necromancy is basically evocation geared towards living targets and the undead + extra abilites (soul ripping... mmmmm....) and we all know information is power. Divination can be superbly powerful, if applied correctly. ie. ahead of time.

But favourite kind of magic actually goes for Fate on Mage:The Awakening system. It deals with the bestowing of blessings or curses, the swearing of inviolable oaths, the ability to perceive the destinies of others (though not their future) and severing connections of magical and empathic nature.

A mage learned in the ways of this Arcanum can level a geas on another, forcing this person to do the mage?s whim. He may increase his luck or that of another to incredible levels (we are talking of getting the Royal Flush three times in a row during a game of Poker, or accidentally tripping in the middle of a road so that a sniper's bullet misses by an inch and hits the mafia boss who just happened to be walking by...), or decrease the fortune of a foe. He may create a doom, a magical object, creature, happenstance, place, or time that gives bad luck to a specific person upon that person?s interactions with it, or he may create a godsend, an article of similar nature that grants protection to himself or another when it is close by. He may bestow incredible bad luck on another person, causing them to fail at everything they try whilst under the power of the spell. He can radically alter the fate of another person, changing the course of their life in a severe way, or he may create random happenings of bizarre and unusual things.

illusion would be my favorite. if given magical power, I'd prefer my opponents not know I'm even there than actually having to fight. Abjuration after that, because I'm a very defensive sort of person.

granted, once I DID fight, the illusions would largely go out the window for some quick Evocation.

Fuck yes definitely this.

Where did the OP get the name evocation? Sounds kinda stupid to me, I'll stick to naming it Destruction magic.

There's nothing like watching your enemy cry when you reduce their +5 Squishy-Mage-Killing-Lance into a board with nails in it... but those hurt too.
Anyway, Transmutation all the way.

You left Mysticism out. Detect Life is the most valuable spell in Oblivion by quite a long way.

Fire balls, ice storm, chain lighting. Nuff said.

That's Conjuration. Conjuration is summoning matter, Evocation is channeling and summoning energy. The aforementioned fireballs and lightning bolts are Evocation, while something like Cloudkill and summoning spells would entail Conjuration. Teleportation is a subset of Conjuration under the D&D rules.

My personal favourites come in two flavours: Messing with people (Enchantment, Transmutation, Illusion, Necromancy) and summoning allies (Conjuration, Necromancy). I'm not fond of directly attacking my opponents (which is what Evocation would entail), nor of hiding me or my allies behind defensive barriers (Abjuration). This applies to all games I play, not just D&D: I've always preferred to curse the enemy so that my allies could harm it more effectively, rather than just adding yet another round of pain to it. Summoning is also a favourite of mine.

Enchantments because I'm a rebel and non-conformist, on a serious note I like buffer/debuffer type playstyles controlling the battlefield to give allies a hand almost always criminaly undervalued or underplayed unless the games debuff/buff system is gimp.

1. Abjuration
2. Conjuration
3. Destruction
4. Necromancy

I love the concept of abjuration magic. It might not be as flashy as say, releasing a pillar of flame through your hands, but it requires a much more intimate knowledge of magical energy in general.

I also love the idea of summoning from your head into reality whatever you want. This one should probably require a maturity level though...I'd hate to see 4chan users learn this skill.

Destruction and necromancy would be what I'd choose if I was only limited to one skill...since abjuration is more or less useless without some other form of magic.

I like playing characters that hurl lightning and use electricity related skills (guess what class and spec I used in diablo 2) There was never a lot of electricity skills in D&D other than like 2 druid ones and 1 mage/sorcerer spell so I was never really satisfied other than my lightning greatsword. On that note I guess that makes it evocation for me.
