Never went beyond game boy colour so never owned any of the further ones, but from playing on friends games nothing beats the originals.

As much as I'm loving Black/White and Heartgold/Soulsilver, I've got to go with the original Red/Blue/Yellow. Too much nostalgia wrapped up in them.

Nostalgia aside, B/W/HG/SS are the best Pokemon games right now.

I like Black and White the best so far. I like the new feel, the new story, the new regions, and the new bad guys seem to be the most interesting yet.

Before that, it used to be gold, and then sapphire, because those were the games where I had my first Vaporeon that was a powerhouse.

i have to say crystal is my favorite nostalgia wise. i guess emerald for it better features that make it more convenient. i have yet to play any of forth or fifth gen games yet.
but at some point i will give the newer ones a chance and buy heartgold or soulsilver, then platinum, then grey(or what ever they name the the rehash black/white with a few added features)

if i was to guess heartgold will be the most nostalgia friendly making it the best introduction to to gen 4. as for platinum and grey who the hell knows.

in theory i could test to see if the beginning of the games is good with a emulator but i proofer owning game instead. if i was to do so then i would never battle the first gym leader; just to make it impossible to advance and delete all files involving the game once i ran out of stuff to.

Can we please not have the whole, "all Pokemon games are the same" response? Saying Nintendo games are like their predecessors is like saying driving a car is faster than walking. Everyone knows and pointing it out just makes you look like an idiot.
you forgot to add leafgren and firered to the poll(EDIT it looks like its been added now). it goes with out saying they are not the best but they still should be on the list. assuming there is room to add them. also all Pokemon games are the same...

now that i am done messing with; i agree that is a idiotic statement. there are a good amount of features add in ever new generation to my knowledge. i still lack physical evidence for gen 4 and 5 until i try them.

Black and White. The animated sprites are gorgeous! I love the new little touches to the formula :) And the story, while pretty basic, for a Pokemon game it touches really meaningful issues. Though in the end, when Team Plasma leader reveals their true intentions, it is kind of a let down, but in the good sense:
Ghestis wanted to capture all the Pokemon in the Unova region so that he would have the power to rule over Unova. I really saw that coming, the cause of liberating Pokemon was too noble for a mere human, especially one in a leading position!

I'm still hoping they will release a game that is pretty much Black & White, in third person and cell shaded and with most of the Pokemon included (not just 1 or 2 generations). That would be a game I would never put down! Hell, I would buy a damn Wii just for the sake of playing it!

Jeez, Pokemon threads are really popular lately...

Gold/Silver is definitely in my Top 5 of best game sequels.

It changed up some annoying issues, added more Pokemon, added Color and blew my mind, really, when I found out the original Land/Challenges were available AFTER I beat the first region and the Elite Four. Took me a long time to completely finish that game, but I really enjoyed every moment of it. I played Sapphire later on but it just wasnt the same, I think I just had too high hopes for the follow up to G/S. That and the pokemon were not as memorable as the previous 250.

Which sounds like a strange thing to say, but I really thought the "new" pokemon in G/S melded quite well with the originals- almost like Gold/Silver was what Red/Blue was MEANT to be but they had to cut it down for development sake.

R/B/Y or G/S/C. The series has been going downhill since it outgrew the original Game Boy, mostly just by running in place while the software standard for handhelds has improved significantly.

Blue, it brings back so many good memories. It also has great replayability...

Heart Gold and Soul Silver. I always loved the original Gold/Silver games, and this one was that awesome feeling of nostalgia as well as great mechanics(though some flaws), and so many pokemon all at once.

Black and White are good, but Heart Gold and Soul Silver are still beating them by a tad bit.

Black & White. It's quite difficult to fix so many previous gripes without earning my favor.
What updates/changes have been made to "fix" the series exactly?

Whatever the newest one is as it usually adds something new and improves upon the formula. Most people are just being to nostalgic and are all, "Herpderp, but the new pokemanz, I can't remember them all because thats so totally a requirement to play this game herpderP!"

Gold and Silver seemed to refine the formula to a level I considered near perfection. It had a completely different feel from the first game somehow, the aesthetic combined with the overall technical differences really added up. However, despite how the TC may think saying they're all the same makes you look like an "idiot", it really has to be said. The games following Gold and Silver were obviously refined even further, but the fact that it was the same plot and the Pokemon started showing signs of complete unoriginality is why I could never call one of the new games better. Nintendo does love to reinvent their franchises, but they never remake the exact same game wholesale. They almost always have new and interesting mechanics behind each game.

the only one i ever played was red, which seemed like a decent 'my first rpg' sort of game. had no desire to play all the spinoffs though

i'd say silver, followed very closely by gen 1... gen 1 gets high up mainly for nostalgia, but gen 2 gets points for being slightly more refined before it gets rediculous

Colosseum was definitely the best. The villians were actually evil, and the only other evil villain up to that point showed remorse, so it kind of ruined everything. Plus you got a cute girlfriend in a short skirt and a badass motorbike.
