These days the protagonists of games tend to carry a great variety of weapons, but I figured I'd ask what kind of weapon you like to see your character using the most?

Some weapons tend to make you feel more like the hero or villain (whatever you're supposed to be) than others in my opinion. The sword and gun are naturally popular in gaming because the whole concept of sword-fighting is ingrained in pretty much every themed story that isn't modern or gritty sci-fi due to its fantasy appeal while guns are popular just because they're the practical modern weapon. Still, are they your prefered armament of choice if you are given one?

I myself usually feel the most like I'm a hero when I have my protagonist wielding a spear. This is probably because of the idea that guards often carry them (as well as swords) thus I get the 'fighting to defend' mentality going.

Giant rocket launcher. 6-chambered.

And every rocket is a mini-nuke. Oh, wait... Been done.

This is a hard one.
I can't really choose, since it all depends on the protagonist himself.
If I'm playing a sneaky guy, then smaller blades...maybe a sword (Not too big).
If I'm playing a big barbarian, then anything huge. Axe, mace, club, sword, whatever. It must need two hands, though.
If I'm playing a knight, then a one-handed mace or sword.
If I'm playing a mage, then either small blades, small projectiles (Sling or something), or a staff-like weapons (Like a staff).
If I'm playing a monk, then fists all the way. Maybe a staff.

So really, it depends on the character. If I'm playing a sandbox type game, like Oblivion, then it's all how I envision my character. I won't use what's best, I'll use what fits the character.

But maybe that's me.

I personally prefer games where you get a small assortment of wildly varying pointy objects. I went with daggers, because they make an entertaining main weapon, and go well with various martial arts.

A longsword, crossbow or pistol.
Preferably the longsword, unfortunately many games that include swords only include very very big swords.
There are even fewer games with crossbows...

Thread needs less of a melee fixation really.

You give different types of melee weapons then just group guns and bows together.

I love bow like weapons like the Crossbow in Half-Life 2, Bow in Dark Messiah, where the enemies get stuck to the walls.
The "Other" option was a close second like environment based damage such a throwing an enemy of a cliff, picking up objects to bash against the opponent, or destroying supports to have heavy objects roll over enemies.
