Big Red One, all the way.
I played the first one, and it was a little too hard for me to figure out at the time- I didn't really "get" it, if that conveys my meaning. But by the time Big Red One rolled around, my Dualshock2 was itching for some action, so I bought it and beat it in under 24 hours. It was much more finely tuned, I felt, than the first- and I liked the characters more.
Although I was a tad disappointed at how damn easy the last level was.
