That will do for me.
I like my Greek facts and fictions. Mainly the fictions but there are some interesting stories from factual history as well.
And Rome because, well, Spartacus.
Would you care to recommend any?Fiz_The_Toaster said:Any piece of fiction based on that is an instant buy for me.
I haven't seen much of it either, but I know there's a comic out based on the Odyssey if that's your sort of thing, it's called 'The Infinite Horizon'.SckizoBoy said:Would you care to recommend any?Fiz_The_Toaster said:Any piece of fiction based on that is an instant buy for me.
I had a look see at a book (whose title I forget now since I didn't exactly think highly of it) about the fictionalisation of the Second Punic War, but it seemed ill-conceived...
And apart from David Gemmell's books about Parmenion/Alexander and the Trojan Wars, and Paul Kearney's Macht pair, I haven't really read much classical era inspired fiction... :/
Shit, that's difficult!Da Orky Man said:Tis a simple question. What era of history most interests you, and why?
And yes, I know the poll is somewhat Western-biased, but come on, only 8 slots and about a thousand different eras.
Pity... though I've heard the title Gates of Fire bandied about quite a bit around here, so probably worth a look...Fiz_The_Toaster said:I haven't seen much of it either, but I know there's a comic out based on the Odyssey if that's your sort of thing, it's called 'The Infinite Horizon'.
There's also Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield that's a fictional account of the Battle of Thermopylae, I think it's pretty good. He also wrote Tides of War, I hear it's good, but I haven't read it yet and is at the bottom of my reading stack.
Oh, do tell!Scarim Coral said:I have interest toward ancient history during the dynasty era in China, mainly because I like to learn more of my heritage.
I had to look that up and does sound complicated, then again, it's based on the Iliad and that was a hard read too. It does sound interesting though, was it really out there?SckizoBoy said:Pity... though I've heard the title Gates of Fire bandied about quite a bit around here, so probably worth a look...Fiz_The_Toaster said:I haven't seen much of it either, but I know there's a comic out based on the Odyssey if that's your sort of thing, it's called 'The Infinite Horizon'.

As for the Odyssey, read Ilium once... that was plain weird... couldn't get my head around it at all... :/
... uh... woops! Never mind, it's all part of the same story... after a fashion.Fiz_The_Toaster said:I had to look that up and does sound complicated, then again, it's based on the Iliad and that was a hard read too. It does sound interesting though, was it really out there?
And now I've made a mistake, I meant mercenary, and I have no excuse....SckizoBoy said:... uh... woops! And it's now half-midnight (after a twelve hour day) so I'm knackered... and yet I'm compelled to go look this comic up! Thanks! =P
