Classical (Roman-Greek)

That will do for me.

I like my Greek facts and fictions. Mainly the fictions but there are some interesting stories from factual history as well.

And Rome because, well, Spartacus.

20th Century bar none.
World War 1.
World War 2.
Nuclear weapons invented.
Vietnam.
The flalklands.
I mean come on people it's when the human race really tried their hardest to kill eachother, if that isn't somthing to applaud I don't know what is.

Classical is my favourite (especially Classical Hellas), followed closely by the Ancient period and less closely by the various eras of the Middle ages (mostly the Fall of the Roman Empire/Dark ages). I have no real interest in anything past the High Middle Ages really, except for the Vietnam war. For some strange reason, I am attracted to the Vietnam war and that small period. No idea why.

I quite like mysteries and conspiracies based on ancient civilisations. Like the origins of pyramids, why entire civilisations vanished, seemingly overnight.

Other than that, I quite like Genghis Khan and the crusades.

Although..I've never properly read up on the American war for independance, being from England it ain't a popular teaching topic. I imagine Ubisoft can fill in some details though ;)

I like reading about things that happened in the Classical era.

Mainly because it's interesting to me how things happened now because of the events that happened then. Also, Greece, I love ancient Greece.

And this too.

Any piece of fiction based on that is an instant buy for me.

Why couldn't we get a legitimate steampunk era!?

Oh, well. I really like the way things looked in the 1940's "Noire" era. I just really like stuff like that. I enjoy retro and vintage and what-have-you.

Would you care to recommend any?

I had a look see at a book (whose title I forget now since I didn't exactly think highly of it) about the fictionalisation of the Second Punic War, but it seemed ill-conceived...

And apart from David Gemmell's books about Parmenion/Alexander and the Trojan Wars, and Paul Kearney's Macht pair, I haven't really read much classical era inspired fiction... :/

I haven't seen much of it either, but I know there's a comic out based on the Odyssey if that's your sort of thing, it's called 'The Infinite Horizon'.

There's also Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield that's a fictional account of the Battle of Thermopylae, I think it's pretty good. He also wrote Tides of War, I hear it's good, but I haven't read it yet and is at the bottom of my reading stack.

Tis a simple question. What era of history most interests you, and why?
And yes, I know the poll is somewhat Western-biased, but come on, only 8 slots and about a thousand different eras.
Shit, that's difficult!
I really like the late Ancient Period (the Egyptians and Minoans - other early trading cultures, leading up to the greek city states and Alexander, then the foundation and expansion of the Roman Republic/Empire.
Then I lose interest for a bit until the migration period and the fall of the empire, at which point I get interested again, at least until the mid-feudal period.

And of course, modern history is the other big one. If you look at my posts I'm usually banging on (in far too much detail) about some inconsequential facet of communism or the fall of colonialism or something!

Pity... though I've heard the title Gates of Fire bandied about quite a bit around here, so probably worth a look...

As for the Odyssey, read Ilium once... that was plain weird... couldn't get my head around it at all... :/

I have interest toward ancient history during the dynasty era in China, mainly because I like to learn more of my heritage.
Oh, do tell!

Personally, I've always liked the idea of Roman, or Medieval time periods. Particularly because they're very warrior based cultures, and I've learned to sword fight since I was a kid. I'd have had a lot of potential in the Medieval times considering my family were lords in Yorkshire for over a thousand years.

I think I have the fondest memories of the stone age. Hunting, gathering, ah...good times.

I had to look that up and does sound complicated, then again, it's based on the Iliad and that was a hard read too. It does sound interesting though, was it really out there?

As for the comic, it's just a modern take on it, never mind that it takes place in the future, and it actually pretty good. The cyclops is a Russian missionary with a night vision helmet that has one giant circle to look through.

1905s or the 1920s would be my first two favourites, swiftly followed by ancient Greece. They're all such great periods but the 50s had beautiful women on every corner. I wasn't there and I'm heavily romanticising, but who in this thread isn't?

... uh... woops! Never mind, it's all part of the same story... after a fashion.

And it's now half-midnight (after a twelve hour day) so I'm knackered... and yet I'm compelled to go look this comic up! Thanks! =P

Renaissance it appeals to me because of the whole cultural and intellectual revolutions as well as the fact its stuck in between medieval and victorian two other pretty intresting eras in my opinion.

No problem! I'm glad I can help!

I do a lot of reading on the ancient world and the 'classical' era,
though I'm wired to be interested in ancient/feudal china and japan.
