Anyone who votes SSB or any other more recent franchise is smalltime. They have never experienced the awesomeness of the original arcade fighting experience.

Arcana Heart. The fighting system is easy to figure out, but rewarding to higher-level play. The multi-purpose Homing button adds another few layers to that, as well. Most of all, I love the customization inherent in the arcana system. AH2 was even better (more characters and arcanas, better balance and music, and the Homing and Arcana move buttons separated), but I haven't been able to play that for a year and a half...

Honorable mentions to Fate/Unlimited Codes, Melty Blood (spec. Act Cadenza version B), SSBB, and Guilty Gear XX Slash.

My top fighters that I have played are definately:

Killer Instinct- Back when everyone was in love with that piece of crap Mortal Kombat, I was off playing this baby. You know, it was MK only GOOD.

Guilty Gear- For reasons already stated.

Soul Calibur- Good fighting system, even if the balance was a little wonky at times. The controls are simple but there is a lot of depth to the combat.

Dissidia- I really don't need to justify this one, just look at gameplay videos and you'll understand how amazing this is. It also has the greatest turtle character in all of the fighting game genre, the one and only Ex-Death. You do NOT fuck with Ex-Death.

Soul Calibur. It leaves everything else behind wiht it's art, technique and awesome characters.
And gets left behind by every game except Tekken when it comes to skill and balancing.

Every game except Tekken, MvC2, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter (except maybe 3), SvC Chaos, certain years of King of Fighters, and Samurai Shodowns 1, 3, and 4, you mean.

Mortal Kombat, that's the only fighting game (besides UFC) that I'll play. It's just great; I love the characters and I grew up playing Mortal Kombat.
I was, however, sad when Midway went bankrupt, I didn't think anyone was going to buy them.

I'm glad they're working on MK 9 now and are going to make it more brutal and dark.

Soul calibur, those games look great and the moves flow really well, although soul calubur 4 sucked hard. But the ones before are some of the best fighting games i've ever played.

...I tried to imagine how they would make Mortal Kombat, a game that already requires me to bring along night-vision goggles and alka-seltzer, darker and more violent. I think I broke my brain.

How is this possible? That's like spicing up the Necronomicon...

i don't see Guilty Gear on there so you and your stupid poll can burn in hell as far as i'm concerned. :p

But srsly, Guilty Gear is pretty much the only fighting game series with a decent storyline and decent music, Plus you still can be fairly decent at it without having to memorize frame counts or crap like that.

SSB. I'm pretty good at it, and the fast paced action is really fun! I love not being restricted by life bars and the ability to dodge THROUGH people makes it feel a lot less constrictive than other fighting games.

Super Street Fighter II. I still remember the day my brother bought a copy for his SNES and booted it up for the first time.

Our reactions: "... Woah."
