they're all great but Snake Eater is the only game that has ever kept me up the entire night. I remember I bought the game early in the morning skipped school and went straight home to play it, I stopped playing around 6pm when I got hungry and was playing again by 7pm but had to stop when I noticed the sun was coming out and I needed to sleep

Not played the first 2 or Peace Walker but I definitely think that Snake Eater was the game where Kojima's insanity was most fun and least irritating.

Plus the boss battle with "The End" is the best way to do a stealth boss and one of my very favourite boss battles of all time.

MGS2 no doubt. Thematically the most interesting and the way the game subverts your expectations was really cool. Game is basically just one big blurb of Kojima's philosophies but that is also what makes this game his most personal game to date. I found the messages in MGS2 deeply intriguing and they remain relevant(and near prophetic if you consider it's a 2001/2002 game) to this date.

Next is the original MGS. Nothing but groundbreaking at the time and the eclectic mix of over-the-top style anime nonsense, real-world seriousness and extensive moral pondering about the military industrial complex gives the game a definite sense of character. It also was the first game that popularized long-winded cutscenes to give the game a cinematic narrative. One that is unfortunately maintained by nearly every other 'story driven' game to this day.

I really enjoyed MGS3 as well but felt it was the most straightforward one of the bunch and did nothing really new or groundbreaking. MGS4 was hit and miss for me. Loved Act 1 and whatever act the return to Shadow Moses was, but hated all the rest. Also this game played more like a Syphon Filter than an MGS game. Not that this is a bad thing but Snake moved at a snails pace which defintely made controls awkward. It also got way too sentimental(to the point of cheesy) as it dragged on(even for Metal Gear standards). Kojima also destroyed the MGS lore(and Solid Snake) with such fervor in this game, that he can only make Metal Gear games now that fill up holes the previous games left. Retcon your way out of that. :p

Playing Metal Gear Solid 1 on the PS1 was the exact moment I gave up playing AAA games forever.

True Story.

Metal Gear Solid 3 of course.

However, a close second is Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops on the PSP. Anyone else remember that? It was like a clunky version of MGS:peace Walkers? I played it so much when I had my PSP. It was just about the closest you could get to a full MGS experience on the go. I loved the recruitment mechanic, and it was my first taste in MGS multiplayer.

Loved that game. Played dozens of hours and was super addicted to its recruitment mechanic. Helped me get into the series (which I was having trouble with at first) and had one of the best themes in the entire series:

Not surprised to see MGS3 lead, but I expected MGS to be in second. Happy to see votes for the 2D games, too! I wish a MG2: Solid Snake fan would make a comment about it.

I don't know if we're counting it, seeing as it's not on the poll, but I really like Metal Gear Rising Revengeance's cheesy parody take on the series.
Yeah, Revengeance counts under "Other". Being a spin-off, it's one of the two Metal Gear games I haven't played yet (the other is the GameBoy Color one - oh, and also the Metal Gear Acids), but it seems cool and I will do so soon enough.

I liked Portable Ops quite a bit, as well. It was quite good considering Kojima wasn't very involved with it. It introduced recruiting soldiers, as you mentioned, and the story was epic almost on the level of the other MGS games.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. I love platinum games and it is just so good. All my favorite things of the Metal Gear franchise condensed down into one fantastic game.

MGS3, with MGS2 closely behind it (and all the others closely behind that). MGS2 was my first Metal Gear game, so I guess I have nostalgia for that one. I also didn't mind so much about Raiden. The worst criticism I have for it is that some of the voice acting was not great.

Revengence, with out a doubt Revengece.

It's silly, its got great game play, fantastic bosses and the music, my god man the music.

besides, when was that last time you started a game by tossing a giant robot in the air hacked its arm to bits, while still in the air, and that cut the damn thing in half while a kick ass rock track plays?

Rising. The Hype must flow.

If I could make out with that game, I would.

Snake Eater, although the gameplay in Ground Zeroes is so perfect that I'm thinking MGS V could overtake it soon.

I loved MGS 1 and it's still good despite being a bit dated (would love to see Twin Snakes released on PC or a current console). The story in MGS 4 went completely ridiculous but it's still really fun to play. Didn't really like MGS 2. Peace Walker was pretty fun until I discovered I'd done the upgrading thing poorly and basically ended up in an unwinnable boss fight because I didn't have any decent rocket weapons available to me. Revengeance was lots of fun once I figured out how to play it properly. Haven't played the two earlier games.

Hm... A lot of negative feedback for MGS4's story. I liked it myself, even if some bits felt a tad forced (e.g. some of the Big Mama section). It brought good closure, and it put a fitting end to Solid Snake's story. Sunny was really adorable - she was the first little girl in games that I liked (well, then Clementine was created, too).

The whole twist with Ocelot's dedication to Big Boss' cause was absolutely amazing, I loved it to bits! The last battle between Snake and Ocelot was just love.

MGS3: Snake Eater guys, the ultimate apotheosis of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, the sweet spot between immersive/complex gamplay features and an overdesigned if serviceable game that tries to cover too many bases.

Seriously, the Camo things works, the weapons are varied and awesome, the environments are well detailed and cool. Animals brought their own danger and awesomeness, boss fights were par for the Metal Gear course but The End? The End was the best boss fight I'd ever played and to this day nothing has topped The End. A perfect combination of stealth, camo usage, hunting, use of the jungle envrionment, and sniper duel to top it all off. You're in a hunting ground and have to master the environment itself to beat your opponent.

I loved it, that slow, patient feeling of tracking The End, wondering if he was going to line you up in his sights at any moment, realising you were getting closer and closer until: You see him, there, anticipating your approach from another angle. You've outsmarted him this time, get his camo, take down some of his stamina and the hunt starts all over again.

Never had a gaming experience that topped my first battle with The End.

Can you tell I liked the boss battle with The End?

The only two Metal Gear games I have played are Revengeance and Ground Zeroes. While Ground Zeroes is an excellent game in its own right and I have played the hell out of it just experimenting, Revengeance is a stellar game that I doubt I will ever get tired of.

Revengeance just hits all the right notes with me in the best way possible, and I don't just mean the game's kickass music.

RULES OF NATURE!

Rising does count as a Metal Gear game right?

As far as the games in the main series goes, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is by far the strongest entry.

It's Peace Walker every time. Snake Eater is good, the 3DS one even better, but I still feel Peace Walker is far superior and I think Snake Eater is somewhat overhyped. It's a great game, no doubt, but not quite as good as Peace Walker.

Also if anyone says Portable Ops y'all need to change your meds.

Yo, AC!D, friggin awesome.

People saying Peace Walker must have a lot of patience.

Gimped controls, repeating missions to grind for parts, grind for proper ending takes ages, the whole story with the Boss was... meh (Paz thing was good).

No, the best stand-alone MGS game was Snake Eater. I mean, I love MGS4 for it's emotions, and MGS2 was my first, and MGS1 is iconic, but Snake Eater had the best single story, huge changes in gameplay for the better, interesting bosses, Easter Eggs galore, change in setting from inside to outside, and that music and the interaction between the Boss and Snake. Just amazing.

I agree about The Boss story arc being kinda eh, but the rest was top tier. Che Guevara references, Sandinistas, KGB... I guess I'm kind of a sucker for Cold War stuff. I agree about the "real" ending being pretty cool, but also that it was a bit of a pain to unlock - practically impossible without a walkthrough unless you're REALLY into this game.

BTW, big Phantom Pain announcement coming tomorrow! Probably release date.
