MGS3 of course. Best boss fight was The End. I still think it's the best boss battle ever in any video game. No stereotypical boss fight nonsense. Just two hunters hunting each other. Amazing.
Metal Gear Solid 4 followed by 3 followed by Peace Walker followed by 2. But I predict 3 and Metal Gear Solid winning the poll.
I loved the gameplay variety in MGS4, one moment you would be fighting through two warring armies in the middle east, next you'd be trailing a stranger through drizzly Parisian streets. Everything felt like it was coming to an epic climax, and then it came to an epic climax.
The fight between Snake and Liquid on top of the battleship is one of my single-best gaming experiences ever. The music, the tension, the narrative drama, the way the fighting styles shifted as the game went on and that final moment where they both helped each other. Then when the UI goes away and bother are worn and in their last strength and you keep on punching and punching until you don't know where the game has ended and the cutscene stared. I love Ocelot's reveal, the man so good at betraying and backstabbing people that he managed to
backstab himself. It's now wonder that he managed to beat the most powerful intelligence and data control organisation ever scene. Ocelot was playing a shell game with the world so good that it was getting hard to see the shells
And then the microwave corridor scene. And Raiden being so badass that lying on the floor with his legs cut off, his arms cut off and his sword clenched between his teeth that the elite commandos were still afraid to approach him.
And I love playing an old man, the end of his story whose outlived the age of heroes and whose greatest problem was that he threw himself at the world but he was just too good at not-dying.
I do love me some Metal Gear Solid 4

Metal Gear Solid 3 has the best boss fights of the series and a truly epic climax (like all the games), one escort quest aside, but the actual day to day sneaking I didn't enjoy so much and the first half of the story is waiting for the second half to come round and interesting things to happen. With the Boss' relationship it's still a phenomenal game

I didn't think Peace Walker would go here, by the sheer madness of rolling the credits and that not being the end of the game is what pushes it over for me. The way those final missions are presented and the genius of the hide and seek game shows exactly what makes Kojima as good as he is. He knows how to play with the very way people think about a game and each stage is him adding another level of complexity and ingenuity that you wouldn't have thought possible (he hides in a cardboard box!). I don't know how he expected people to solve the last one.
I enjoy the whole Big Boss character arc and I'm excited for V but what really makes Peace Walker is that it's the game where I enjoyed the stealth the most. Breaking it up into small discreet unsavable sections really works and made me use a lot more of the utility available, whereas before I'd just save scum. That mission where you're trying to sneak up on the snipers and scouts hiding and waiting for you is so much fun and I love that the game doesn't cheat at all, they#re wearing camouflage uniforms and positioning themselves so well that it really works.
And stealthily sneaking through an area, silently taking out the cards (with a banana) and then... attaching a balloon to them and yoinking them into the sky is the new cardboard box

I love the level setting for 2 and it's got the second or third best bosses of the series (maybe MGS1 edges it out). I particularly enjoyed the Fatman, but Vamp was great too. I've got a lot of love for it, but I've got even more love for the others
I think MGS3 is the best one. The setting's great and I absolutely love the survival gameplay. I also think it had the best stealth elements since you didn't have a constant radar showing where your enemies were and where they were looking at all times. The bosses were brilliant too. The End is still my favorite boss fight ever. It is closely followed by the final boss fight of MGS4.
In terms of gameplay The End's battle in MGS3 is the best boss battle but the final battle of MGS4 was so damn intense and pretty emotional.

Agreed. That fight was brilliant. It also has one of my favorite strong female characters, The Boss. She was all sorts of things at once: motherly, intimidating, unbelievably wise, and in all senses of the word, a true badass. She also wasn't exactly the definition of conventionally pretty, with a slightly masculinized face and frame, which aren't all that atypical of women in combat roles. Not to mention, that game felt the most self-contained of all of the Metal Gears. You could enjoy it without even knowing a single bit of Metal Gear lore and still be engrossed.
I like playing Revengeance the most since I prefer hack'n'slash over stealth. I like the themes of 2 the most, though 3 has the best classic bossfights and characters.
However my favorite boss is Monsoon, because he was a parry check boss and kicked my ass until I got it down. Once I did and kicked his ass I felt awesome, and not many bosses give you that satisfaction. I would post the picture where monsoon is slapping you with his floating dick, but I'm afraid it's NSFW.
As much as I enjoy many of those games, and they all definitely have their moments, it has to be MGS3. The End is one of the best boss fights in gaming, it has one of the best, if not the best, female character in gaming in The Boss - and Eva isn't half bad either.
Huh, I was the first vote for Peace Walker o.o I admit, it felt a bit short/dis-jointed due to the rather pointless mission based structure... But it still felt really cool to man your own army and build up your base, put people where you want them, and all that stuff. Not to mention it has my #1 fave song EVER, Heavens Divide in its soundtrack~
Only thing I hated a hell of a lot was its crappy customization for your own Metal Gear. Getting parts for that thing was tedious and slow, and NONE of the other parts you get change anything visibly. I don't even know if any parts I selected would make any difference in an operation I sent it out in. I was very very disappointed in this.
Besides that, it was a great ride. And the fact it's for a portable system only makes me like it more~
Toss another vote towards MGS3. I feel like it's the most unified story, combined with some of the best controls and gameplay. The setting is particularly great. CQC is a great new gameplay addition and is fully supported thematically throughout the story. I also find it was done best in this game, and in most other games it's gimped ever so slightly. I also really like the survival aspect.
Followed closely by 4. 4 Had a pretty great story, and I really like the variation in settings for each act.
It also had so many excellent gameplay additions. I really like the idea of the "battlefield stealth" system, where you use the chaos of action to sneak around, rather than hiding in the shadows. The Octocamo is really, really cool, not to mention useful. The game also offers many different styles of play. The game rewards you often for being nonlethal, but you can also play the game almost as a tactical shooter, and you'll find the game actually supports this playstyle just as much, where you can gain allies and share rations and ammo as you slowly encroach on the enemies holding their ground.
The level design is also damn top-notch here. You can typically play through a level several times and still find completely new paths through to your goal, or to support your play style.
Then would be 2. 2's story is all, and I mean absolutely all goddamn over the place. I kinda like it for that reason. But I mean sometimes plot threads pop up, and then they're pretty much wholly forgotten and dropped within a matter of less than an hour.
This is pretty much the last MGS game where the sound of footsteps doesn't give you away, and I actually kinda like that. You can run around as much as you like as long as enemies don't see you, making the stealth more fast-paced at times. But while the stealth is great, the gameplay can be tedious at parts. The Big Shell in general just gets really boring after a while with absolutely no variation in style or level design. You're also often sent off to fetch things all the way across the structure and all the way back. It can be really frustrating to navigate.
But I actually did like the addition of Raiden and I find the codec calls some of the best in the series to be sure.
MGS1 I'm not sure of. I've never played all the way through it. I think I like it, but I'm never really driven to keep playing it through to the end like I am with others in the series.
Those are mainly the ones I know and love the best. I've played almost all in the series, including the original MSX titles, but I'm most familiar with the Solid series.
Oh and best boss fights? The End, Fatman, the Rex vs Ray fight from 4 was amazing, as was the fist fight with Liquid.
MGS 3 was the most memorable one for me personally, and it felt like the story wasn't trying to hard to be as convoluted and crazy as possible, yet not be too simple.
I will say that MGS 4 is probably the most playable one, best controls and it looks great, but I feel like Snake Eater was more direct and focused, if that makes any sense. Plus it had more memorable fights, I remember just about every boss encounter in the game vividly.
My initial instinct would be to say Snake Eater but having recently replayed MGS2 I actually think that it really pushed the boundaries of the medium far more than it is often given credit for. It's an astoundingly clever bit of story telling.
So for the actual game part I'd say Snake Eater, but overall I'm going to have to go with Sons Of Liberty simply for the sheer balls Kojima had to do that.
The bosses were vastly different compared to what I was used to fighting, as it wasn't usually as simple as pointing a gun and shooting them to death. Psycho Mantis stood out in particular for me, and I don't know if there has ever been a boss like him since the game came out. Kickboxing with Liquid on time of Metal Gear REX while watching a bomb countdown was pretty extreme as well.
It also felt like Metal Gear was threatening in Solid, since it could actually kill you quickly. Every other Metal Gear has been easy to take down for me, but REX still challenges me to this day.

A tie between Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 3.
The first one ofcourse being mainly a nostalgia thing, but I still think the pacing in the first half is brilliant, and I fucking love how the codec conversations start to add to the conspiracy later on. There's also a charm to the old synthesized music that the later games lack.
Also, The Best Is Yet To Come. Best use of a song in the series.
Metal Gear Solid 3 ofcourse pulls the miraculous feet of being a prequel... that's good! No, not just good, fucking amazing! As well as presenting us with a female character that's tough and imposing without resorting to either sexualization or "dude-afication". And that coming from, not just Japan, but Kojima... Baffling.
It was a difficult choice for me between the original PS1 game, Snake Eater and 4. In the end, I chose the first game.
While 3 does have the best story out of the bunch in my opinion, and what can arguably be called the best character in gaming EVAR (The Boss, she is just mesmerizing when on screen. I can fully understand why Big Boss and Zero were so hung up on her. She did in Snake Eater what Anthony Hopkins did in Silence of the Lambs and literally stole the scene whenever she turns up), gameplay wise, it's a continuation of a series with some updated, revised features. It wasn't new.
4 obviously had the best graphics out of the bunch, being on PS3, and had some amazing scenes and character moments, but those were really towards the end. However, its story, while still pretty good, does require you to have gone through Solids 1 and 2 first in order for you to understand what is going on.
Solid 1...wow. Now there was a game. I never played the MSX games, but I never felt the lack when playing this game. This pushed what the PS1 could do to the limits. Everything was fresh and new. It broke the fourth wall in completely novel ways, e.g. Psycho Mantis boss fight. The story was tight, understandable, but still worked even with the many plot twists. The characters were fully believable and excellently voiced (when have they ever not been?). Also...the Irish song at the end credits just cinched it for me (three guesses as to where I'm from!)
I only played through MGS1 and MGS2 all the way, and I liked MGS2 more, even though I didn't like Raiden very much.
I tried MGS3 for the first time last year and I got bored quickly. I don't think that it's because something specific to MGS3. I think that I just don't like this series as much as I used to.
Only played and finished MGS one two and 3. Between those MGS wins hands down I didnt care much for 2 or 3 hence why I never bothered with 4 I do want to get revengeance though that looks awesome.
For me I guess its MGS3, never played MGS4 but MGS3 from all the others is the most focused and tells the better story even though the controls are still ass even at the time.
MGS2 is a cluster fuck and I really dont like how the game plays, it uses the camera like in the first game but the level design seems closer to something of a game that would expect you to have free control over your camera, that just there really hurt the experience for me. MGS1 didnt had that problem due to the level design.
MGSW while more fun to play with better controls and a lot more shit to do and unlock does fail amazingly in the story, its just one of the dumbest things I ever watched.
The game also suffers from being too easy, there is a semblence of challenge up to the point where you get the stealth suit (its very early on), after that you just do this for the rest of the game:
This mission is made for the hold up thing but you can actually do most of the others with just a banana and following the same principle, and if you take an empty magazine clip you can throw it at the enemies to make them turn their backs at you. Basicly the rest of the game is just you running around pointing bananas at the enemy's backs with the exception of boss fights.
