I recently had a 'discussion', if you could call it that between a fair few friends about which FPS game they preferred. A few said CS:S, but the main one was Battlefield. No-one had even heard of the Cube series (bloody good fun) or America's Army, which I'm in the middle of trying to find. So I pose the same question to all Escapists.

I don't play online multiplayer very often, but I'd have to say it's a toss up between Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2.

Halo's not even an option in the poll? I know everyone loves to bash it and everything, but come on now. Let's be realistic here.

Halo 3's my favorite online shooter. This is partially because I have little to no experience with anything else, but most of it is that I just find it terribly fun.

I fell in love with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I spent an entire summer with my best friend playing that game, learning the best strategies and weapon loadouts (without camping or using the noob tube). I rabidly defend that game from all the criticism my friends have, citing amazing balance (noob tube and RPG still being cheap) and wonderful maps (Crash and a few other maps got remade for MW2 Stimulus Package. Shows how awesome they are.). I play Halo 3 occasionally with friends, original GoW rocked, and Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 are my go-to swat games, but CoD4 is my all-time favorite shooter.

Battlefield [Vietnam] got me into online FPS. It took me through high school (BF2), and now I'm addicted to it while in university (bad company 2). I have to say, the level 623 Master Gamesmiths at Dice take the cake and throw it in the easy-bake.

There's a simple couple of reasons I haven't put stuff like Halo or Modern Warfare:
Nothing else would be voted.
If you give the option of voting for a game that has been the ruler of the FPS genre, and some other pissy little choices, it's pretty obvious what they'll vote on, UNLESS they absolutely hate in, in which the flame wars start.
So, 2 reasons why they're not up there.

As many hours I've put into 1.6 and Source, L4D is by far my favorite online FPS with TF2 being a real close second.

Huh. Good reasons, point taken.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory before the source(I think) was released and every idiot could create their own mods, which meant every server had it's own mod, millions of crappy addons were made and you spent more time downloading worthless crap than actually playing.

The game itself was a fast paced, class and objective based shooter. From what I remember it was also one of the most balanced shooters I've ever played.
TF2 gets close to how ET played, but from what I've seen in Fortress Forever and TF2, ET is basically an unofficial TF sequel on a different engine and with some minor gameplay changes.

Combat Arms. Its fun even though I have a ballpoint mouse, lag a bit AND have to deal with hackers.

It's pretty hilarious that you made a post about FPS games and didn't include Call of Duty in the poll. Gee, I wonder why everyone is voting 'Other'? /eyeroll

Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2.

I love TF2 for the ridiclious shooting and the amazing balance.

I love BC2 for the giant war you feel like you're in. I'm not sure any game captures that as well as this game....multiplayer wise anyway. Maybe Mag but I only got a 20 minute trial.

Why make a long detailed post when the above already explains everything I would ever want to say?
