Title says all, my favourite would be Company of Heroes, never played Starcraft though, heard it was alright ;)

EDIT - Oh yeah, forgot to say, anyone ever play RUSE? What did you guys think?

Well mine personally is Star Wars Empire at War: Forces of Corruption, mainly because I love RTS but I can't handle all that micromanaging like in StarCraft (which I love) but it just overwhelms me, while Empire at War takes away most of the micromanaging while you're fighting, making it a very streamlined RTS, I'd say it's a good starter RTS at the very least.
By the way the fact that I love the FoC campaign has a lot to do with me choosing this.

I'm very partial to Dawn of War myself, but the Total War series is also excellent. It's hard to pick a favorite, really. I'd really say anything by Relic; they're the best at the genre in my opinion. They've definitely struck a good balance between practicality and innovation: each of their titles tries something new, but not in a spastic, gimmicky way--it always becomes central to the experience.

Starcraft is too frenetic for my tastes; the first thirty seconds pretty much defines the rest of the game. If you built one less worker than your opponent, you're probably screwed.

Very close between Dawn of War and Total War, but I have been playing Total War much longer, so I went with that.

Personally, my favorite would have to be Majesty. It is totally unique in its control scheme and aside from Majesty 2 there is nothing quite like it. It is also brutally difficult, delivering a rewarding player experience.

Total War is one of my favorite game series of all time, so I naturally picked that (although it's a hybrid of RTS and TBS). I love playing through the campaigns and having to fight battles against seemingly-insurmountable odds, even though the AI can practically defeat itself for you lol. Shogun 2 looks like it will advance the gameplay in almost every way, and a featuring a setting other than Europe is great IMO.
Starcraft and Age of Mythology are my runners-up

Thank you for reminding me, Age of Mythology was a good game too. I especially enjoyed abusing the god powers...

You thought I was going to say the War of the Worlds RTS, didn't you?

Brutal Legend. It manages to blend RTS and action into one gameplay style that works seamlessly and is great fun, and it even does it without needing a HUD. And now I can't play regular RTS games without getting annoyed that I can't kill stuff myself.

Ah can't decide.

Starcraft 2 - Overall the best RTS campaign I've played
Company of Heroes - A really unique game that favours tactics and strategy rather than simple rushing.
Dawn of War - A regular match starts with a lot of scouting and land grabbing, then begins to escalate into a complete war when more and more units enter the field and start hammering away at each other. Grab some popcorn and watch the massive battles
Dawn of War 2 - CoH and DoW 1 made a baby. Hectic multiplayer matches
World In Conflict - A great game overall and the story is brilliant, the 102 available support options are a nice addition as well.
The original Age of Empires - Awesome. Simply awesome.
Age of Mythology - Awesome with added awesome.

Where the fuck is World in Conflict!!? Argh, murder frenzy!!!

*Hrm*

Yup, World in COnflict it is, closely followed by Company of Heroes. Played both Dawn of War, love them, never got into Starcraft 1. Total war is too smart for me. (Invaded north Latvia, suddenly I'm at war with Poland, Denmark and mighty Russia. Damn Charles XII for not having any friends.)

My favourites would have to be AoE's cousin Rise of Nations and psychotic, starcraft-esque Total Anihilation

I am not a big fan of RTS games, but I rather enjoy the Total War series. So many RTS games feel like there are a million things going on in 10 different places. They feel like juggling at times. Yet with Total War most of the action is centralized (yes, there can be random skirmishes off to the side, but for the most part it's centralized). In many RTS games I hate having to fight 2 or more battles at different areas, and it just gets more frustrating than enjoyable.

Cossacks: European Wars, because RTS should be about thousands and thousands of units to command, not annoying limits.
