This is really difficult for me to choose; So I'ma break it down

> Never played Company Of Heroes

> Really found Starcraft to be boring, I don't know why, I just did.

> I used to love Command and Conquer, 3 seemed to take a downwards turn and I never played the most recent one, just seemed far to gimmiky

> I love Age of Empires and Rise of Rome, didn't like age of kings but I'd play the multiplayer, and age 3 I couldn't stand

> Total War, now this series really hurt me, Medieval and Shogun were superb games, games I continue to play to this day, Rome and Medieval 2 were both excellent games, but, I always felt they lacked something in comparison, never been sure what, thet didn't quite feel right though. Then Empire happened, this was the first game I ever came across that I despised, it was released massivly buggy, to the point I never completed the campaign mode because it kept crashing to the desktop everytime I hit end turn after a few turns, it's been the only game I've sent a "carefully" worded email to anyone about to voice my complete displeasure, this game is the sole reason I will never buy another Total War

> Dawn of War, loved 1, couldn't get into 2

> Other, well I got 2 stand alone games, that I love and play Rise of Nations (amazing) and Haegemonia: Legions of Iron (like homeworld, but you know, good, in fact one of the best RTS games I've ever come across)

TL:DR Other

My favourite RTS game is probably War Of The Worlds. Actual 3D RTS with more or less realistic weapon behaviour. None of this "can only attack ground/air" stuff. So far it's the only game I know that lets you attack flying enemies with srtillery cannons and determines hit chances purely by trajectory and position (The actual bullet/shell flies to the enemy. If it hits, fine, if the enemy moved, bad luck. Also, as mentioned, between artillery and flying enemies). Also, the first actual 3D strategy game I ever saw (you know, with an actual third dimension, not this multiple-layers-stuff like in Starcraft or C&C).

COnquest Earth is a close second. They had some awesome game mechanics there. Merging units to create better units, persistent research and resources, the oxygen/sulfur clouds instead of fog of war, with specialised units and buildings to remove them (Actually, fog of war in a game like Starcraft, where every faction has space vessels, never really made sense to me), direct control over single units, so complex maneuvers became possible (like drive-by-shootings with a tank), and a cool interface (battlefield monitors and neatly organised build menus).

Machines was quite awesome, too, but mostly because of the voice over and frst-person-unit-control.

The funniest briefings I ever saw in a game were in KKND2, of course.

And I shouldn't forget Earth 2150. While 2160 is great, too, 2150 had far more unit customisation, research videos, persistent home base, and great unit control (on advanced AI scripts).

Men of war is my favourite followed by the total war series, anything by Paradox comes after that.

The old Dawn of War games were awesome

I'm not huge into the genre but the most fun I've had with one was Warcraft II.

EDIT - Oh yeah, forgot to say, anyone ever play RUSE? What did you guys think?
*double post*

i played ruse and thought it was actually pretty good, i expected a PC port of a console RTS but was surprised when it became really fun. only bad part is the camera where when you zoom in it automaticly goes level with the ground at a 90 degree angle. not game breaking, just mildly annoying.

Where the hell is Supreme Commander Forged Alliance or Total Annihilation?
You can not have an RTS poll without either one (preferably both) of those games. Forged Alliance is one of the pinnacles of RTS games (Unlike Starcraft, Supreme Commander is a real RTS. Starcraft is a good game, but it's real time tactics).

The only game that comes close to SupCom IMO is RUSE. Even then, SupCom's unit and building command system is vastly superior. I really want to see a game with a command/order system like SupCom's. It was amazing.

Yeah, but that's what crtl + m3 is for. It does get a little annoying, but it makes great screenshots.

Seeing as I'm an RTSer, who have played all on the list to death, I will say that my favorite gotta be Dawn of War 2. Starcraft (both 1 and 2) are brilliant, but macro-management never appealed to me. I prefer the more tactical gameplay from Company of Heroes and Dawn of War 2. That being said, if you're a person who REALLY likes tactical gameplay.. Give R.U.S.E. a try. Good game, overall.

Edit: My reasons are probably because macro-managing is boring in my opinion, I much rather prefer micro-managing. IT TAKEZ SKILLZ DAT KILLZ!

Age of Empires 3, Rome Total War and C&C Generals are the only RTS's I've played, so I went Total War. I loved that game, plus you can recreate 300!

Other: Warcraft 2&3 and Brutal Legend (Yahtzee called it [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/1044-Brutal-Legend] so I'm counting it).

I'd also like to add the Heroes of Might and Magic series (even though they're not "technically" RTS). I loved those games.

Spore.

It becomes a RTS after the tribe game.

It has a rather good realtionship AI, much better than civilzations's "only your ally untill you become a hinderence" ghandi.

Gee, I dunno. I really like 5 on that list :p

Ima go with Company of Heroes, not to say that Starcraft, DoW, Age of Empires or Total War are bad.
