I vote goes to Luffy (second place is Goku). Ichigo is plain and Naruto is annoying but with Luffy isn't too lawful good per say. He just do whatever he like which is pretty much good intention since he doesn't listen to the whole story to the situation they are in (e.g he slept most of the Mermand island lore story). Sure he does fight for his friend as shonen goes but he isn't the type who will say he will saved the world (but he will do it) like the other shonen characters.

I guess all 4 HxH main characters count so it got to be Killua or Kurapika!

Also, since the anime airs in a couple of months, Jotaro from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is a decent choice.

You know, honestly, my inner 15 year old still fucking loves Naruto. The plot is a mess but the characters, art style and just are just right up my alley. I don't have nearly enough patience to keep up to date with the manga and anime any longer though so I get my Naruto fix through the Ultimate Ninja Storm games. They cut the filler, give me a chance to play as the characters.

My next choice would be Goku out of those because I also enjoyed Dragon Ball Z as a kid but never to quite the extent that I enjoyed and still enjoy Naruto.

Yeah, you heard me. One of the most elitist anime fans on this site still likes Naruto. Even I like a power fantasy here and there. And Hinata is just great. She needs more screen time. I will ship her and Naruto til the end of time.

Simon the Digger, or Ryuko Matoi.

Or is an official requirement for "shonen" to run for ~600+ episodes?

I'm not a huge fan of any of any of the mangas or shows in the Dragonball franchise but...
Picked Goku from Dragonball, which imo was much better than DBZ. In that series Goku's naivety could be rather charming and partly laid down to inexperience, having been raised in the middle of nowhere by a hermit. Whereas in DBZ he was just sort of a dumbass who embodied physical perfection.
He was also a deadbeat dad xD

OT: I prefer Edward Elric if you count him.

Thing is, original Dragon Ball pretty much paved the way with naive (possibly stupid) heroic, silly protagonists who eat a lot. I feel most shonen just shoots itself in the foot by creating carbon copies of it. Admittedly, I really like One Piece, but Luffy is the absolute least interesting character.

Do we have to choose off that list because screw you I'm picking Joesph Jostar. He's rude, cocky and a bit of an ass but he is truly a good person. His fighting never relied on brute strength but more on use his enemy's own cockiness against them. Outwitting them because he knows he'll get his ass kicked if he goes at them straight on.Sure he can be cracking jokes all the time but even those are part of his plans. This is the man he makes running away look heroic. He has that optimism that so many shonen protagonists have but it's never in your face. He even gets to be a bad ass grandpa and help out his grandson. The best chapters of Stardust Crusaders is his fight with the Empress just because of how fun it is to see him in full form again.

It also helps that he is sexy as hell.

So yeh big up your favorite character if you wish, but no need to go making erroneous statements about those you don't like ;)
Calm down man, just because I just like Ryuko more doesn't mean I don't like Goku and Ichigo, those two are actually my favorites out of the five on the list. I have no opinion on Luffy since I've never watched a single episode of One Piece. I've only seen three episodes of Fairy Tail, and Natsu's pretty cool. But Naruto is a loudmouthed idiot who can go screw himself.

Seichiro Kitano, Angel Legend (angel denetsu if you insist on not translating the title).

Sweet, gentle natured soul with a lot of genuine warmth and caring, and an actual pacifist who very rarely fights by choice.

However, he has the looks and voice of your average movie serial killer, to the point just about everybody who meets him assumes he's a vicious delinquent who'd happily murder them as soon as look at them.

Gon from Hunter x Hunter gets burned again. Ouch.
I haven't watched it yet so it's not an intentional snub. I also need to check out a few other series people have mentioned here which is kind of the reason I put an Other option. Hoped people would point out where to go once I've finished watching Fairy Tail.

Also, for the people who've mentioned the "eat like a pig" thing. Isn't a huge appetite supposed be a sign of vitality in Japanese culture? I'm not sure but I think that's the reason it keeps cropping up.

I'm gonna have to go with Natsu. Despite pushing up the Determinator trope up to eleven (with every negative implication that statement holds) I just can't help but be amused by his random nonsensical 'tactics'. Even his shouting doesn't get to me. I'm not sure how he does it but it's true.

The thing that hammers it down though was a scene with Gildarts.

During the Tenrou Island arc, when they're doing S-class exams, Natsu ends up facing Gildarts and gets absolutely curb-stomped. Not only did he lose, he was terrified, up to the point of being incapable of moving. Gildarts reasoning? He wanted to teach Natsu what it means to be scared, simply because 'Natsu always wins because courage and friends'.

He seemed to take it to heart, but now it seems his courage makes him kind of a douchebag, which I do find quite enjoyable.

Out of the ones on the list I would pick Luffy. I like One piece and I enjoy his character, he has also stayed consistent throughout the series and he doesn't come off as preaching about friendship at all. If he meets a hideous person then he pretty much says "I don't like people like you so im going to beat the crap out of you". At first I found it kinda amusing that this main character who is a good guy was supposed to be a pirate but over time I have come to realize that his idea of a pirate is just being completely free with no laws or morals other than what you want to get in the way and I find him to be much more of a true pirate in that sense than many of the other characters.

He is my second favourite protagonist though, my favourite one has to be Gon from Hunter x hunter. I've really enjoyed Hunter x hunter overall and although it looks like the typical shonen and Gon looks like the typical shonen protagonist, it really isn't.
In the current arc it even seems as if he is going to become a lot darker, it looks like he is giving into his hate and desire for vengeance and losing his innocence. The only one I could see stopping him from this is Killua but even with his newfond compassion and mercy I don't think Killua is the one to pull him out of that.

If you haven't watched Hunter x hunter and you enjoy Shonen then I recommend going and watching it.

Does Full metal alchemist count as Shonen? If so, Edward and Alphonse Elric by a mile.
I wouldn't really count it. It is more ...
Action-Adventure, Science fantasy and Comedy-Drama.

I find that Fullmetal Alchemist is much serious-logical, unlike the generic shonen out there.

----------------------

OT: For me on the other hand, if we count all shonen, Joseph Joestar would outrun them by a mile.
Due to his comedy and fabulous poses!
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a damn great series.

For the generic or BIG shonen, I would go with Goku. Just because I can't get that scene where him and Vegeta go and learn to drive. XD

I cannot recommend this enough

Gon is my favourite as just as others have said, on first appearance, he looks and acts just like your typical shonen protagonist, but later on shows that he isn't as innocence as he might appear as

in the current arc when they invaded East Gorteau to kill the Ant king, he teams up with Meleoron, a Chimera Ant who wants to kill the king as well. When Meleoron questions why Gon would be so trusting of new people, Gon states that it doesn't matter for if he does betray Gon, it just makes it easier to kill him

If you want to get a good idea of how dark Gon can get, just watch the next episode tomorrow to get a good idea of what I'm talking about

I haven't watched Naruto or Fairy Tail, but out of the remaining choices I'll pick Ichigo Kurosaki, as much flak as he gets.

Based on what I had read about Bleach, I thought Ichigo sounded more like dumb muscle than a main character. And while that might not be...entirely unfair, I ended up liking him a lot more than I thought I would. What I like about him is that at his core, Ichigo is a guy who's just trying to do the right thing. I think this particularly works because he constrasts well with the more morally ambiguous characters in the series. Beneath the scowl, the jerky tendencies, he just wants to be a good person.

Another reason I like him is that he racks up major woobie points during the series. I feel Ichigo doesn't have the same level of determination that so many other shonen leads do. He doesn't deal with failure well, and there have been a couple of points where he's entirely given up. Perhaps it could be accused of being nothing more than cheap angst, but I feel that it humanizes him in a way that doesn't usually happen to other shonen protagonists. I like determined characters, but I think determination becomes more meaningful if a character has limits, instead of just shrugging off whatever the plot throws at them. While it's something that could've been done better throughout the series, I think of Ichigo as a guy who needs the support of his friends to be successful even if he'd like to go it alone. He needs someone to pick him up when things get too heavy.

And yet, as much as I like him, I can't really disagree with most of the usual criticisms he gets. He does gain power too easily, he does have a history of fighting harder instead of smarter. Perhaps the difference between me and everyone else is is that I blame the writer for not handling his character correctly, instead of feeling that the character himself is the problem. And I realize you could probably do that with any character from any series, but I feel that Ichigo has a strong foundation.

I must say, I'm surprised that Naruto's gotten the least votes. I know he's controversial, but based on what I've heard about each of those characters, I would've expected him to beat Natsu and Ichigo.

Luffy is quite a good hero, sure he matches nearly all the categories for the typical Shonen hero, but to be fair, he was made at a time when it wasn't annoyingly common and he actually has a character, particularly character development.
For the first time, we see Luffy truly despair over losing his brother and believe he wasn't cut out to be the King of the Pirates.
Personally, I find Oga Tatsumi and Tsuna Sawada to be good Shonen heroes as they don't check off most annoying traits, you know and manage to be entertaining and fun heroes.

EDIT: Can't forget Edward Elric!
What? I thought you'd be rooting for Natsu what with your love for his buddy Happy! >:)

OT: Goku from Dragonball. He really was just a goofy kid thrown into situations, but he wasn't just one note either. Had a few really good moments

Like when he met back up with his dead grandpa, or when he first met popo[/S]

The last few episodes is exactly how you draw out a short amount of time over multiple episodes. It didnt even register to me that the last 3 or 4 episodes all took place a little over a minute.i can't wait to see how this arc ends.

I remember liking Tsuna from Hitman Reborn quite a lot. Edward Elric from FMA was just an amazingly written character and I am a little nostalgic for DBZ. Aang from Avatar LA was also great, both in personality and philosophy but since its made in America the whole anima/non-anime issue is a bit iffy.

That being said, out of the availeble choices I am picking Luffy.

He isn't as deep as Edward or Aang, not perfect as Goku but I think he's a great character. He's optimistic, but has his limits (marineford). He fights for his friends, but he draws the line (usopp and the going mary). He isn't noble and he certainly isn't intelligent. He has no sense of obligation to anyone but his friends and usually does whatever he thinks is the fun and/or right thing to do at any given point. Not so much neutral or heroic good but chaotic.

The fact that it's the only still ongoing shonen manga I read that remained consistently good probably helps his case.
