The Escapist really really needs to have a section in the profile to enter a description about one's avatar. I can't say how many times I've wondered what a user's avatar was from but never had any recourse other than to search through their post history to see if they've ever posted in a "what's your avatar from?" thread and that's just way too tedious. Also when a user changes their avatar they should be prompted to say what it's from.

So what other features do you feel that The Escapist needs?

EDIT: Yes, I could pm them, but it seems a little ridiculous to pm tons of people for what in most cases is a passing interest. And that only helps me, what about the other people that are curious about the same avatar? Every single one of them have to pm that person asking the same question. Why not just take care of the problem at the source and list it in the profile? And, yes, people could list it in the bio, but they won't because it's not encouraged and most people probably won't think of it. Plus the very fact that those "What's your avatar" threads exist is proof that there would be demand for this.

This reminds me. The Escapist could really use better polls, more options and also a type of poll where people can select all the options that are applicable. Like, if I were to make a poll to get peoples opinion on the addition of 3 features to the Escapist (A,B,C) then I would have to have an option for: (A) (B) (C) (A+B) (A+C) (B+C) (A+B+C) and if you have 4 features or whatever you don't even have enough poll options to represent all possibilities.

Also people who don't have an avatar set should have no avatar, rather than the ugly default avatar.

I feel like I'm stating the obvious here, but couldn't you just PM the person to ask them about their avatar?

Besides, there's nothing stopping someone from using the "Bio" entry on their profile to talk about their avatar. So a dedicated section for it would seem a bit unnecessary.

Why not just... ask the person? you know Pming is much faster than going though the history. Or check one of those "whats your avatar from" threads out here that happenso nce in a while.

What?

What is this?

How is this something the site desperately needs

This is literally the the first time I've ever heard someone suggest such a thing. If you're that curious, just PM the person.

Once somebody PM'd me to ask what my avatar was from.

I responded by going to their home and shooting their dog. Because seriously, who asks a person something like that?

Just PM the person, no big deal.

It's win-win really, you get to know where the person's avatar is from and they feel better about themselves. I know I did. [http://i912.photobucket.com/albums/ac323/Nouw001/ChristmasAv12_zps56e943d9.gif]

Alternatively...
Get google chrome, right click the picture and select "Search google for this image". Google will have the answer, if not (which I doubt) just pm the owner like what everyone else said.

The only thing I'd like the escapist to have is an updated anime review section.

It really needs to change the positioning of the messaging icon. Half the time I'll accidentally hit the forum menubar & then won't be able to access it. Easy to workaround, but it's annoying as hell!

We could also use a moderation system that lets you type in a reason for the report...don't know whether that'd be useful to mods though.

Huh, I came here expecting a number of choices of things the site actually needed. Not a Yes/No poll on something no-one else has ever suggested before. Chucking my hat in with the "PM the person" crowd.

Man, that person got off light. When did you chill out so much?

You know, I've had dozens of people over the course of my time on this site send me a personal message simply asking me what my avatar was from. I always answer them and do my best to point them in the direction of the content they're after. I think you should try it some time.

One function this site needs is a "hide thread" function. So I can hide Sarkeesian threads on sight to prevent myself from entering into one of those battlegrounds ever again.

A button that you click on a users post that sends someone to their house so they can slap/punch[footnote]You can pick before you confirm you want to do this.[/footnote] them.

So, in a way, like the report button, just a lot more satisfying. :p

Why resort to trying to hire that much more international manpower?

It should just send one of those cartoon boxing gloves straight out of the monitor screen and into their nose, complete with "Bwoing-oing-oing!" sound effects.

OT: I'm not sure what people really expect my answer to be, but I've gotten many PMs about my avatars since I picked a theme and ran with it, and I'm always perfectly happy to show them where whatever gif I'm currently using happened to come from.

It just so happens that this current one isn't actually from a Kyary music video, but it was just so cheerful that I couldn't resist using it.

It is still Kyary Pamyu Pamyu from all the knowledge my Google-fu can draw me, though. Unless Google lied to me.

A better CHAT. That IRC-thing bugs the hell out of me and I never manage to boot it up properly. A chat, easily reached (and noticeable) from the front-page, that isn't IRC.

But this site already has usergroup chats, don't they count?

Like the moderator's usergroup chat, for example...

For everyone saying to just pm the person and how that would be easier, wouldn't it be easier to just click on the person's profile and say in the general details why the person chose said avatar instead of waiting for a pm back? I wouldn't say that this is something that the escapist desperately needs, or even needs at all. It'd be cool for a bit, but I like reading those threads every once in a while. Something different and funny to look at on a gaming site like those "what do you actually look like" threads.

I would say just Pm the person, but considering new threads called "what's your avatar" pop up at least once a month, you can wait a little while. I actually like not knowing what some avatars are, it makes them mysterious.

I'd like some more profile customization options.
Nothing to fancy that lets you make it look like your personal website (because it's easy to lose the functionality),
but just something to add a little more personality.

Ahh, 5 of the same answers in a row.
How about something that stops that? A big button that pop up saying "You're the 10th person to say this, shush!"

But srsly, something like this for us lazy bums?

We get a lot of people who don't understand how to do it so it might be easier with a click of a button.

It'd be nice, if reporting a post, to have the option to explain WHY you're reporting it. It'd be nice to be able to use it to request thread mergers or closures or to point out suspected bots, etc, without having to type out a bloody post explaining what's up and then reporting that too.

Wait, so you killed a dog? Not the person actually asking the question? Talk about misdirected anger, you should have just burned his house down and let the dog go.

Also... seeing as you're quite far away... do I detect something that looks like Battle of Wesnoth in your avatar?

OT: While I guess it could be a little nice at times there's nothing you can't solve with Google's image search.
