My first was X. I know this makes me sound like a wee child, but I really just started RPGs late. I still haven't gotten around to playing VII yet.

I think it was, but I honestly care say if I played any before that. It's certainly the first one I remember playing.

EDIT: I guess my theory only applies to those in the 15-19 age range, teens who grew up with the PS1/N64/SNES.
IMO, your theory would really only apply to those closer to my generation (X), seeing as my generation was the one PS1 had the greatest impact. PS1 came out in the us in '95, I believe, I was 20 years old and I was there the day of launch. I'd played FF since it came to the US on the NES, tho I didn't REALLY get into it until 4 and (especially) 6 came out on the SNES (as 2 and 3 respectively). I remember, clearly, the nights my friends and I camped to play FFVII when it came out, how the graphics were mind blowing in comparison to the other, older games and then I remember, after finishing it, how bloody AWFUL the game REALLY was.

Seriously, it looked FANTASTIC, yes, I got all weepy when Aerith died and how absolutely BAD ASS Knights of the Round was when you successfully used a W-Summon.

But that's all the game was... Aerith just being a blow to the chest and KotR being OP and gorgeous.

Everything else was emo teen angst and, really, started a trend of FF shoving weak, crying "heroes" in my face.

I've never wanted to curbstomp any game character more than I did Cloud...

... until Tidus came along.

I've never been a huge fan of the FF series, though I did quite like 1 and 4, but other than that, they haven't really impressed me. I guess, though, I'm not much for turn based, or at least not the way FF normally does it. I'm more of a fan of games like Tactics or Fire Emblem, the whole semi-chess element is a big draw, I think.

Yeah I'll be honest. It was my first RPG ever overall, hell look at my email, that might give you a clue on how big it was for me.

But I've moved on, sure I still have tons of fun with it because I love the Materia system and the music, but well my favourite Final Fantasy game is IX, and my fave JRPG ever is Breath of Fire III.

I want to vote but it wasn't my first JRPG but voting that implies I think it was good; where' the "It wasn't my first and it pretty much sucked" option?

My first JRPG i ever player was Phantasy Star 1 for the Sega Master System, but that said, i also was in the age where i could even comprehend what a rpg was like. Must have been in the age of 7 or 8 and was on a visit at my cousins place. As i didn't realize what was realy going on, i wasn't too impressed and hoped mostly on the Jump&Run trains. Several years later spending an afternoon over at a buddy from school. He was in fact playing said Final Fantasy 7 and was just attempting the Ruby Weapon and even able to beat it. I found all those numbers realy fascinating the next game i got myself was the PC Version of FF7. And shortly after FF8 as soon as it was released. From there on i was quite interestet in the FF franchise and the genre.
