When it comes to games for specific consoles, there are often times when people cite one or two titles as being the best or most successful for it. In the case of the PS1, Final Fantasy 7 is frequently hailed as "the game that sold the Playstation". However, there are also many others who would argue that the equally-renowned Metal Gear Solid is just as worthy of the top spot, maybe even more so.

So such, I would like to know which of these two titles you would personally choose as the top game of the PS1. Now, I realise that there are probably a fair number of you who may well not care for either of these games, and would instead choose another title. And if that is the case, then feel free to say so in the comments. But, just for the sake of argument, if you HAD to pick one of these two games as the best that the PS1 had to offer, which would it be? And why?

I'm a huge FF7 fan, so that gets my vote. My MGS was a HUGE release as well. So my vote went to FF7 but they were both game changers.

Personally, my vote goes to Final Fantasy VII. I sunk hours, days even, into that game. I maxed out the time clock on several of my playthroughs. While VIII was the game that got me into JRPGs and is my favorite, I acknowledge that VII is better and probably played that one more than VIII. That game just did so many things right.

I think a lot more people played FF7 than MGS. Both are amazing and did wonders to the gaming industry as a whole. However since i am a massive FF fan, i have to go with FF7.

It was unquestionably FF7. It's probably the most iconic game of the 90s, with the possible exception of OoT.

I suppose if I had to vote out of the 2, it'd be FF7. Big world, lots to do, the first introduction to a character's unavoidable pervade att for a lot of gamers, etc.

I mean, the real answer is a tie between FFT and Saga Frontier, despite both's equally hilarious flaws.

EDIT: " pervade att"? Did I stroke out for a sec there? "Permanent death"

ask any random person what ff7 is or show them a picture of cloud, and they are much more likely to know who/what it is than snake/MGS is. I only know of one friend off the top of my head that's played the MGS games, while I can think of handfuls of friends that have played ff7.

MGS is a fine game in its own right, but just by pure popularity ff7 is the "real star" of the ps1.

Neither.

FF7 was over hyped, with graphics beaten by games like PD and NiGHTs.
Story beaten by FF4, FF6, and (one year later) FF8.
Music, while solid, isn't the best of the series.
Etc.

MSG, while a good game and better than FF7, was never my 'go to' game of the genera during that era.
I'll give that to Syphon Filter.

I'd say Japan was the REAL star of the PS1... and those choices prove my point...

Other than that, Rayman... because "YEAH!"...

Probably my two favourite PSX games. Out of those however I would give it to FFVII I have played them both many times but FFVII has stuck with me more than any game I have ever played. Im actually playing it again at the moment and loving every second.

FFVII and MGS were (are) the high points of their respective series imo, although I have not played all the metal gear games by a long stretch (series lived and died pretty much with MGS(1) for me. After completing 3 I couldnt force myself to continue anymore).

MGS, simply because I heard about that more than FF7. I should say too that I was an N64 guy at that time, so I don't know if that makes my opinion, as an outsider, any more or less valid. lol

However, let's not forget Twisted Metal 2 (AKA World Tour). A lot of people seemed to forget the TM series a lot. Even me.

Oh, and Spyro, as someone already said. And Crash Bandicoot.

Voted MGS, but in fairness, I've never played FF7 (shock and horror, I know). But MGS was one of the foremost reasons why I got a PS1 after the era had passed (N64 was my de facto console during said era).

Snake's alright and Rex is cool, but I enjoyed FF7 more. More entertainment value, to me.

According to Wikipedia [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_games], there are over 2300 games for the PS1.
With that in mind, why can only one game be the star? Nay, how can only one game be the star?
Both MGS and FF7 are beloved classics for a reason, and for completely different reasons. To compare them directly would be a disservice and would be akin to comparing apples and oranges.
Not to mention, there are many more classic titles that have a real shot at 'starhood'; Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Medievil, Soul Reaver, Grandia... The list goes on and on.

Pretty much this, there were so many games on PS1 that so many things right and could be considered stars, it is a rather unfair question with only these two games in the poll.

My personal tastes gravitate towards MGS, I can see the objective merits of FF7 within the era it was released and the impact it has had ever since, but I never liked the game too much, I was more of a FF8 and FF9 fan.

Between the two?
I'd argue MGS was more technically impressive and progressed a genre. Sure, FF7 was a much larger game, but MGS toyed around a bit more with mechanics.

FF7 was really just the same Final Fantasy formula just brought into a fully 3-D format, which is important for sure, but there were also several other fully 3-D RPGs on the PS1 at the time.
