Last week I was with one of my friends near his school, where he gets bullied a lot because he is gay. We were at a park with some other friends and me and three others went to get fish and chips. When we got back some guys from his school had come down and start verbally and physically abusing him. Without thinking I ran over and punch one of the guys from his school and kicked another in the chest. After this they ran off.

What I was wondering is did I do the right thing? my friends were divide, some said I did the right thing, others it wasn't my place or I shoudln't have done anything.

I would have done the same thing. Except I first would have tried to talk them down...

Oh and welcome to the Escapist!

Hey man, you do what you gotta do. If they were physically hurting your friend, I'm all for getting my hands dirty then. Telling someone to go fuck themselves is one thing, but when someone starts to literally get pushed around, then shit changes.

As far as I'm concerned, I believe you did the right thing. Sometimes, people need to be put in their fucking place. Theres a time and place for calming a situation with words, but theres also a need for fists to get involved at times as well.

What do you think though? Thats the real question.

My talking down was "What the **** are you doing?!?!" as I ran over. I normally would have, as I'm rarely violent but that day I think somehing just snapped.

Hell yeah. If someone you know is being attacked, then unless they are to blame for that (and you know that's the case) then you should defend them. If your friend was to blame and you knew that to be the case then you should have let him be beaten. But in a situation like the one you describe, of course you should have helped, and I commend you for doing so. Hell, I'd have done the same and gone even further, as I used to be bullied (though never physically), and besides, I have a lot of built-up frustration from various points in my life that would make me extremely violent and dangerous if someone were to get into a fight with me. That being said, I don't believe in 'fair fighting' - there are no points given for style when you're trying to hurt someone as much as possible...

But yeah, as I say, you did the right thing. There's absolutely no need to obsess over it like this.

Well if they hit or otherwise physically attacked him, you have the right to defend him i guess...

Otherwise, no...

But trying to talk some sense into them before throwing fisticuffs, would propably be a better way to handle it...

Violence may not always be the best answer, or the proper answer; but it sure as hell will always be an answer, and it usually works.

So yes, you did the right thing; stand up for a friend, I've fought for far far worse things.

Well, I'd do it again if need be. So I guess so
Then you've answered your own question in here. No need for the approval of the internet. I do commend you for doing so though.

I would've done the same thing, except then I'd kiss my gay friend full on the lips...but feel horrible about it after because I tried to make him straight.

Or, worse comes to worse, he kisses me back, but pulls back, grinning sheepishly and says, "Oops! Sorry, [insert my real name here], your flat-chested body felt so...manly. We're still bros, though, right? ...right? ...Bro?"

I'm not looking for insight so much as how other would have seen and responded to an issue as such

That would have been about the same "talk down" I would give. Followed by a push. Then a palm strike to the jaw. Then an elbow strike to the nose (which would make it bleed). Then a side kick to the chest (that would break something). Well, only if they didn't run away after the push... If I went any further, I would probably get arrested...

Oh, and it's the internet, you can swear.

well if they used violence, then i would first tell them "to back the fuck off", if they don't violence immediately moves into the "fully acceptable category", oh and welcome to the escapist OP
