Browsing the Steam sales today I noticed that both the FF 3 and 4 remakes are £5 each and I am wondering how good they are. I have never played 3 but I remember enjoying 4 a great deal but it has been many years since I played it so are they worth my time?

Thank you to all who reply.

Both good, but I've heard the PC ports are inferiors to their original DS counterparts

The thing to keep in mind is, the Final Fantasy games are very much subject to the flea market rule:

One fan's trash is another fan's treasure.

And those two you mention are cheap as pocket lint at this point. Yeah. I think your best bet would be to just buy the games and find out what YOU think of them!

Well I believe the poll results are more than obvious
Yup

OT: Both games a re really good, 3 is quite old fashioned but it has a great job system and is a tonne of fun. 4 is literally the grandfather of modern JRPG's and is excellent, you owe yourself to play it.

HOWEVER.

The PC ports are shit. The DS version of 3 is better, and the PSP version of FF4 is by far and away the best version, it has the best visuals and brilliantly remastered audio. Also it has more extras and the wiiware sequels.

FFIII is one of my least favourite FF games. Maybe I've been spoilt by FFV/FFX-2 but I really hated how primitive the job system felt in FFIII. Apart from that I just found it very uninteresting. It's a serviceable yet bland JRPG.

As for FFIV. Meh. A lot of people love it. I thought it was decent but nothing special. In the original FFIV there was no character customisation whatsoever which made character progression feel a bit token but I've heard that the DS version (which the PC port is based on) added some features to vary things up a bit.

For that price I'd say it's worth checking out FFIV.

Ports usually tend to be, one way or the other.
Well for FF3 basically your only other option is importing a Famicom and learning to read Japanese xD

If they're direct ports of the DS versions, 4 is pretty good but they really turned up the difficulty with it iirc. The FF3 remake is just good on its own if you like old-school RPGs.

Don't buy them on PC. Aside from the MMOs (XI and XIV) never buy a Final Fantasy game on PC. You can pick up the III and IV remakes on DS for dirt cheap. Trust me. You'll thank me later.

I'll swing my vote for the DS version of III and IV but if thats not an option, then a few bills for the PC versions aren't that bad. Just realize you're probably going to find annoyances with them.

Well, you know what I mean: a port from a system to a computer never really looks or plays right, and a port from a computer to a system is often 'dumbed down' and/or graphically inferior.

IV, you get the PSP version, no question. It comes with an expansion pack and the sequel, VI: The After Years. The expansion pack bridges the gap between After Years and IV.
III, you get the DS version. It's cheaper than the PC version and better.

I actually didn't really like FFIV on the DS. Problem was they devoted the bottom screen to a tell all map which made the game way to easy for me.
