Alright so its about 10:30 here and I just got into an argument with a friend about something relatively stupid. The topic was thus, why can't Square enix make another decent Final Fantasy game? Now, first off I've never played every final fantasy game but I have played the majority of them, the remakes and what not, I have played FFCC and I loved that series in particular because it felt like Final Fantasy but different, to me different was good. For those who don't know the last game I believe was their new MMORPG, but that doesn't really count, I'm talking about the series with roman numerals, or sometimes numbers as was X-2, that series. I think they should go back to open world maps? Traveling around, fighting bosses, collecting secret weapons of awesomeness, what happened to that? I mean I saw some warning signs that something might be going bad when I played X-2, but when 12 came out I had some hope, you know, AI controlled party members wasn't something new to me, you could still travel around, find weapons of awesome, or maybe I just liked the fact that it was loosely based on FFCC.but now? We have, what, a new mmorpg that sucks, and a console game that makes fans cringe worse then when they hear "FINAL FANTASY X-2" But maybe I'm an idiot, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, maybe Final fantasy is a god send and I'm blind, I want to know what you think, is the series dying out completely to the point where it'll go as low as any other old series past its prime and only pump out games to make an income off their fan base thats strangely defensive and loyal? Or do you think there is hope for that old massive openness, hunting of items and saving the world from epic bosses that aren't complete shit?

Wow, three people voted in the poll and no posts, lol
It's only been a few minutes, chill out.

OT: Personally, I think they need to get Yasumi Matsuno in charge because he's awesome. At the very least bake him a very large cake and beg for forgiveness : P

Final Fantasy is done for.

I have have played (and liked) 7-8-10-12-DOC. I also played X-2 but didn't like it so much. The top of my list is FFX. I got it when I was in Fort Benning and was lonely. I still have mad Yuna love. (if you couldn't guess from my avatar)

I stop playing because FF13 was the first one I really hated. (X-2 a close second) IMO Final Fantasy started going downhill after the Square Soft-Enix merger. Square Enix as it's called now, just treated it as a free cash cow. As a result, old vet's left the company and the new one just ripped the series apart.

FF12 was good, but I think that was just beginners luck.

Yeah.. I dont know... given that the poll options are fairly biased by implying you either hate it or you love it like a fanboy might keep people from wanting to dive right in.

Honestly I have lost a lot of respect for SE over the years, but I also respect that they have the ability to release a FF title that will be wildly popular at just about any time.

Even the worst examples that garner so much hate and criticism are still very well selling games. Honestly the only reason they keep putting out games like they have been is because people keep buying them.

Yeah, FF X-2 sold over 3 million copies.
(I'm not even joking about that)

I don't really have a problem with Square Enix or Final Fantasy. I don't know why people moan about it so much. I liked the companies old stuff abit more for sure, but I don't think their new stuff is BAD per se. So far most Final Fantasies I've played in the main numerical series, have at least been okay, and they can't ALL be classics. I see no reason for Square Enix to stop making Final Fantasy games, If I don't want them, then I won't buy them, it's as simple as that.

I think a lot of people just think it's cool to hate on Square Enix these days. Gives 'em edgy gamer cred.

Now I may not be speaking for everyone, but for me, XIII's major problem was an inappropriate ratio of story, combat, and plot relevant combat. Now that probably sounds a little strange since most people only mention the first two, but here's why I think other games did things in a pretty okay way while XIII should have rethought most of its gameplay and traveling sections.

XIII has a very high level of plot immediacy. The game plays certain parts almost as if in real time. In such a scenario, there is nothing more disheartening than seeing a corridor that is absolutely jammed to the brim with enemies that have no bearing on the story. In X or XII there were a lot of creatures on the way, but in those games a lot of room was left open where traveling WAS the plot point, so it made perfect sense to drop enemies on the way. That puts a challenge on the road to the next major plot point without deterring from it. XIII had so much of this that novel seeming combat fell into tedium and the story wasn't kept tight enough to provide the level of interest and depth that I and I believe many other fans desired from the game.

So XIII missed the point, and it seems like XIV's launch has been an unmitigated disaster. Worse yet, Square has decided to make a spin-off of XIII as if they were completely out of touch with a large portion of their North American and British fanbase (I can't speak for the Japanese) or as if they gave the project the go-ahead before XIII was even on shelves. Does this spell the end for the series? I don't think so, I just think it marks a very pathetic resolution to this anniversary celebration of having 6 titles in a compilation for Final Fantasy XIII. Terrible execution, but they're not going to tank the core franchise that makes up both companies these days because of this venture. They've still got plenty of capital. Now if XV also fails, then you can pretty much call this series dead in the western market.

EDIT: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/the-final-fantasy-retrospective/4831

Watching that again, the series really has fallen from grace quite badly since XII's release (that doesn't include XII, I loved that game). If Versus doesn't turn out to be great or the next numbered title in the series doesn't add up to our expectations, the market for this game will shrink by quite a bit.

I can see that they still have talent, its just they need to use it. I'm hoping they can make a great game sooner or later.

this. plus most of the games are not that similar, and they are NOT related in any possible way story/character wise, so i have no idea why people want the "series" to die out (the only reason you would ever call it a series is the titles go numerical, but besides that they have little similarity)

OT: i dont care for some of their newer games...but sure, keep churning em out, they have a pretty strong fanbase, and every game can't be a classic, so one solid one is bound to come soon.

I think it started going downhill after Squaresoft was forced to become part of Enix. =/ I really do miss the world-roam (hell, even a world map), and the periods of open-ended "do whatever you want". It all seems to be hallways and hand-holding now. Yes, with spectacular graphics, but... *sigh* I think they've fallen into a bad habit of taking what they know to have been a successful formula in the past, using the parts of they can bank on banking with, and... just sticking to that. I'd like to see something new... in mechanics or story, aside from a different magic system each game.
Different is too risky to try, though (seriously, why not? The hardcore fans will buy it so long as it has "Final Fantasy" in the name, and considering the sizeable fanbase... that's still a lot of sales).

I would like to see a remake of 7 and 8 looking like 13, with actual voice actors, but that'll probably never happen. Aside from that, being a Japanese company, and making the game primarily for Japan instead of the rest of the world, I have no problem with the FF series continuing. They just won't have a big overseas market as they once did.

Well you see my main problem was the lack of openness thats coming from these games as of late, I mean, they can't make an mmo to save their lives, they've tried three times now, FF 11, FF 14 and Fantasy something or other thats a free to play mmorpg thats absolutely atrocious Fantasy Earth Zero I think for those interested, and that poll isn't that biased you either think you have hope for it, you don't, you love tifa, option five, or a reference to final fantasy 7. Also no, they should not remake any non voiced characters with voice actors that could go horribly wrong, look at Other M for crying out loud. A remake graphically? Yes that would be nice and probably sell faster then and better then anything they have made in the last few years. I wouldn't say I'm so much whining about this I"m just hoping they give me back my freedom to travel in the next game, plus I honestly am trying to get people's opinion on the matter, you know, so I stop being a freakin leecher, as you can tell I've not been posting as much as I should. One thing I want to see less of is AI driven party members, more open worldliness, I mean who doesn't remember getting their hover craft in the first few games and feeling like they could go anywhere? People who never played the originals and got the hover craft thats who. And whats the deal with people gripping about Crystal Bearers? I didn't see one thing wrong with that game.

I haven't played FF since X-2 for...obvious reasons.

I have no ill will towards the series, I'd just rather spend my money on other things. Most western RPGs are more my style anyway.

Not reading that wall o' text, sorry. Welcome to the Escapist nonetheless. :)

Even without reading it, I'd say let the series die with grace, but then again, I live in the Western Hemisphere. The "12-year-old emo kid saves the world" formula has kinda worn thin on me, and the gameplay itself seems to have gotten worse with every iteration since X. People in Japan still eat that shit up with a smile though, so I doubt we'll ever truly see a final Final Fantasy as long as the Empire still stands.

I'd MUCH rather play the next Mistwalker game than the next Square game, tbh.

Because the core gameplay was actually good, maybe?
The plot wasn't horrible and the characters were a tad annoying for the first 10 hours or so, but it was interesting seeing what happened to everyone after Yu Yevon's defeat.
I know it was girly and complete fanservice, but the battle system and dresshpere grids were an interesting idea that worked quite well.
