While I think naming your character something like "Captain Gobblecock" is funny and everything I do find it immersion breaking. Everytime the name comes up it reminds me that this is just a game and the character is not real because I named him and it's not like they're my kid or anything.

That being said, when I played Animal Crossing on GC and I was riding the train to my new town in the beginning I was approached by an NPC. They proceeded to ask me where I was going and I just replied "Your Ass" because I thought they were being nosey and I also think my vulgarity is funny. Little did I know that this is how your town gets its name. Hilarity ensued any time there would be an event in town after that. "Oh, did you see? We're erecting an enormous tree in the center of Your Ass in celebration of Christmas." Another good one was "There's a new visitor in Your Ass." Oh, man . . . it was ROFL all the way. This sort of thing happened all the time.

I always retain the original names on the first playthrough, the second I name them after family members and friends, the third I name them random crap.

Unless a game has the option to name every party member, I usually stick to the original names for characters. It's usually good friends for party members, while it's friends I poke fun with for rival characters (one person knows who they are when I say that). Of course, in games like FFIX, I may make an exception, and just put Garnet's name as Garnet with the name change.

I always keep their default names on the first play through and if I play it again, sometimes I'll change them to something else.

For all except FF VII I use generic names. For VII I name everybody either Aeri(s)(th), Sephiroth, or Cloud.
Just for hilarity's sake.

I always use default names in games. For some reason it doesn't feel like I'm playing the game properly otherwise. And like it's been said already, it makes the story feel more real.
Although there are some pretty cool custom names I've seen on youtube. One channel with FFX playthroughs (think it was just called FFwalkthroughs or something) named Tidus "Boner", and the Aeons stuff like "Eggroll", "NutGlaze", "Asshole!" etc. Hehehehe.
I think Spoony's naming of Riona and her dog win forever.
who?

They tend to vary for me... Widely...

Sometimes I'll just give it a 'normal' name. Other times I'll give it a wacky name. Most of the time, actually.

I stick with the default names because I cant seem to think of any that seem remotely cool. For example, I cannot think of any name that suits Tidus better than Tidus. (Annoying thing though is that on Mt. Gagazet, Seymour forgets your name and just keeps on calling you "Son Of Jecht" :p)
lol. its because with voice acting they couldn't say it. they gave you an enter your name function with a game with voice acting and then have voice acting? you could have called it anything. i found it highly amusing that they went thorough the whole game killing enemies left right an center and no one could say your name.
It'd be fun to imagine Tidus hacking his way through Via Purifico in Bevelle and cornering a rookie Warrior Monk on the Monk's first day on the job...

Tidus - "What's my name, *****?"
Monk - "I, I don't kn-know..."
Tidus "Say my name! Say it!"
Monk - "I c-can't! You changed your default name and we're all confused!"
Tidus skewers Monk for the mortal insult...

It's also funny that Tidus becomes petty much best friends with everyone in the group by the end, and he's starting a relationship with Yuna, and yet none of them ever refer to him by his name, they just say 'Him'... apparently communication isn't a strength in his and Yuna's relationship :p

Personally, I always go for the default name. It's just easier. Although in games where I can choose the name of something like a transport or whatever, rather than a character name (so, unimportant things), I may use the default, or I name things after my favourite female characters from similar games. For example, in FFXII: Revenant Wings, I called the airship 'The Namine', after the KH character. Because, you know, all ships are traditionally female, right?

Naming things after the weather seems logical to me.

Cloud> Sky> Condensation.

In all seriousness. I havn't played FF. So I'll refer to what I usually call me characters: Holy McPointyface.
LOL, so in Final Fantasy 14 the hero will be called "Precipitation" or maybe "Low pressure Zone".

I normally stick to default names because I just want to play the game, although I remember calling the Sprite in Secret of Mana "7UP"

Get it? hur hur

Great, now I feel I must do this on my next playthrough.

OT: I like having default names on my first playthrough and then on my next playthrough naming everyone ridiculous things. I named everyone in FFVII "Sephiroth" once to try and make things entertaining. It was hilarious at times.

I keep all their original names because I suck at naming people and using custom names makes it a pain to talk about the game with your friends.

Alright, I have recently played through Sims3 and was pretty pleased with some of the everyday names I came up with *go me!*

I named my lady sim: Morrigan Williams
and my guy sim: Edward Keenly

Considering I go with default names given in 90% of my games, I am pretty pleased with these ones that just popped out of nowhere.

If I'm playing the game seriously, default names. Zidane is Zidane.
If I'm playing for the lulz, funny names. Link is Fagballs (for instance).

Pokemon is the only example I can think of that I change names.
It's usually just on legendaries.
Biscuits the Palika, Tiddles the Groudon, that sort of thing.

Just wondering from this gaming community how people name their characters or just stick to default names given.
MAJOR EDIT: Ugh, stupid me, accidentally pressed enter.

Anyway, do you choose custom names for your main characters in Final Fantasy? If so, tell me which one and what name.

Well, comment away.

Main purpose for this is that in many of my games, I use the default names available (except for pokemon, where I changed my rival's name to a rude word for the lulz (gimme a break, I was like 10). I just want to see the names people come up with.
-funny image inserted here-

I normally stick with default names except for in Final Fantasy 8. I accidentally snipped the 'l' off the end of 'quetzacotl' once so I always change it now.
Nice find. Hahaha, poor rival.

So the trend is that the majority of people tend to stick to default names.

Whats the best names that people have come up with for certain characters? Hmmm...

I usually use the default names. Once I started playing a game of Final Fantasy 7 with the plan to name the characters after various members of a forum I go to regularly (not this one), but I only played that file for like half an hour.

I don't see the point in changing the names.

It makes it confusing, changing all you Pokemon's names to something else means it just takes longer to find the ones your after.

It takes effort to come up with new or amusing names that just get old after awhile anyway.
