As much as i love playing FFXI, sadly i think it will close first due to the immense popularity WoW now has. I haven't seen anyone mention FF now for a long time since WoW came out.

FFXI seems to be populated mainly by people over 25 these days and in my LS there are people over 50 so yeah it's been pushed into the shadows like most grand parents(Ironically this game is one of the eldest 3D MMO's people pay to play) mainly because of difficulty. Thats why FFXI is trying to get old player back with a new thing called 'Return home to Vana'diel' which allows old players recover they're old characters on a new account or something like that. All the details are at http://www.playonline.com/ff11eu/campaign/wcb/

What I'm curious about is why are WoW and FFXI the only options in the poll? There are quite a few other old(er) MMOs out there still going strong...

P.S. FFXI is likely to close sooner. Even if Blizz stopped making new content for WoW, the sheer inertia of their customer base would keep it going for a looong while...

Final Fantasy will always have it's hardcore fan base where as WOW players will end up moving on to the next fad when it becomes available. XI's cheaper and comparatively 'quicker' to progress anywhere by all accounts.

And again with the competition? Why is everything 'this vs. that'? Can't things just co-exist? I like the fact a lot of kids play WOW, it means they're not bothering me on FFXI :D
That is a really, really good point and I agree with it 100%.
Dichotomy sucks!

...Since FFXI is most certainly a game of "Best equipment only need apply!"...
WoW is the same way with gear.
You can't do any high level dungeon without someone else complaining about how you play your character.

They will both fail eventually, even blizzard realizes this and is starting to make a new MMO. I'd put my money on FFXI to fall first tho.

Anyone who thinks Blizzard's juggernaut will die before Final Fantasy XI is delusional.

On a side note, Final Fantasy XI is a far worse game due to having a much more ridiculous grind and requiring you to party up in order to level. At least with WoW, you have the choice of grouping or soloing. You get no such choice in FFXI. Not to mention, there is no PvP at all and the PvE gameplay is a far outdated model of MMO-play. Not to mention, the non-customizable interface of Final Fantasy XI becomes extremely annoying when you are allowed to completely revamp the interface if you want to like in WoW. While I never got to the end-game in FFXI, from what I have heard from players who have is that it's extremely annoying compared to WoWs end-game.

Admittedly, I haven't played FFXI in a while, so things might have changed. I really feel that the only kind of people who can love Final Fantasy XI are those who can love it because it's Final Fantasy.

Perhaps he's thinking of Diablo III, the only game that will detract from WoW's massive userbase. The juggernaut that is World Of Warcraft will chug on to the end of time.

Even coming as a fellow who once had 5 minutes of fame writing an article about how World of Warcraft is doomed due to the overall lack of depth of its game mechanic, and as a fellow who is very impressed with Final Fantasy XI's retention rate, I hesitate to say that Final Fantasy XI would close after World of Warcraft.

Why? Because World of Warcraft has sold so well that people will be anxious for a chance to trying to sell that game well after it has become so passe that even Blizard won't host it anymore.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if people - obscure collectors and hangers on - are still serving emulated versions of the servers of both games well after we're all dead and buried.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blizzard_Entertainment , could be bogus but I've yet to fail my trust in wikipedia.

see children, this is where he fails

Don't just link to Wikipedia. a good Wikipedia page has citations and sources listed at the bottom. Find the link down below that shows blizzards announcement of a new MMO project, then repost it.

because without citations or sources, anything else, even (or especially) on wikipedia are pure speculation

I'm not saying that you're incorrect, just don't rely on Wikipedia as a source page for facts. I followed the bread crumbs, and eventually I was lead to this thread:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=3168513730&sid=1&pageNo=1

Blizzard had 2 job openings for work on a Next-Gen MMO, and Drysc confirmed only that it was not related to wrath of the lich king, or world of warcraft in general.

I don't see Blizzard giving up on WoW for a while, even if they are working on a new game, those games take a of time to put together, especially if it's a new IP.

XI

no doubt about it
Gold star, it comes down to numbers, FFXI has a dedicated fan base and had a two year head start on WoW but that calculates to two more years of age / outdatedness, and WoW has a larger dedicated fan base at this point.

Bear in mind that Lineage II is still going, so FFXI may have more time than we realize. But the only way WoW is going to shut down at this point is when WoW II takes the stage.

Here's a question: FFXI or Warhammer?
