There was a time when I loved the final fantasy series and it was the reason that rpg are my favorite genre. However, X-2 and XI kind killed my hopes of a good final fantasy game. Having not played twelve yet, I'm find myself wondering, will XIII bring final fantasy back to the glory it once had? Also, Square, Turn based combat, bring it back.

12 was awful. Be glad you didn't play it.

From the looks of it though, it seems Square got their shit together and made a the first good FF since X.

Hopefully, this will not disappoint.

See, I use to hate X-2. But now replaying it, it's growing on me. Anyway, back to topic.
Seeing as I haven't played 11 or 12, this will be my first FF game for about 5 years.
And it looks great, to be honest. The battle system sounds good, if a little daunting at first but it looks like when you figure it out, it'll be a good system. The story, or the very little I know of it, sets up a good interesting story with many chances for plot twists and shocks.

It will be a good game at the very least, I think.

For me, VI, VII, and VIII really set up what an rpg was supposed to be. Turn based combat, fantastic story, epic boss fights. Nine was kind of meh, but I figured they were allowed it. Ten was fantastic, but then with X-2 and XI it just seemed to have ended.

X-2 had a decent combat system and the whole Garment Grid thing was moderately innovative and (I thought) a nice idea.

It's just a pity the story, characterisation, dialogue, voice acting and music fluctuated between 'adequate at best' and 'ear rape'.

There was a point where the series wasn't great? oh yeah FFVII right, they fixed that though with FFVIII being good. also they fixed the whole FFVII mistake altogether by making crisis core and it was really good.

so yeah FFXIII just continues the greatness of the series.

(woo 3 FF threads in a row)

god i hope so...i feel the same way with the OP, i haven't liked 10-2, 11, or 12. if i don't like 13 either, i may have to give up on FF games.

There hasn't been a single game Square-Enix created, that I enjoyed as much as the old stuff Squaresoft made. I'm not really sure if I'm gonna buy FFXIII yet, maybe I'll wait til it's half-priced or something. Reviews are kinda meh; some are good and some are very bad.

That said I kinda say the same thing about the 2D vs the 3D jRPG era, so I might just be full on nostalgia. No jRPG will ever beat FFVI for me. I also hate VII with a passion.

I enjoyed FF12, but it only fell somewhere in the middle on my list of favorite Final Fantasy games. I'm hoping that 13 at least threatens my top three (4,6, and Tactics), but as long as the story isn't as painful as 10 (which was otherwise a strong game) or 8 (which I never could make myself finish) I should be satisfied.

How is that possible, that's like changing the name of the game itself.

From what I've heard the biggest complaint about it is the linearity but that argument doesn't hold water for me. Linear storylines doesn't mean it's bad it's just one way of telling it. The characters and overall plot of the story are going to be the deciding factor on if I think it's gonna be enjoyable or not (since I've heard mostly good things about the new battle system).

I'll have to wait and see when I pick it up tomorrow to start forming my own opinion though.

I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy Series and I am going to buy Final Fantasy XIII as a birthday gift for myself next month. But I am nowhere near the fanboy level. I did not buy Dissidia because I never asked the question "who would win: Zidane or Bartz?" I do not waste time going to the internets and complain everytime x-random internet reviewer points out the flaws of whatever a Final Fantasy game is reviewed. I am well aware of the flaws of most final fantasy games. I have my favorites, like 4, 6, 9, 10, and 12, but I've enjoyed all of them.

For good or ill, Final Fantasy should be retired for a decade. No matter what the fans say, it will be the thing that non fans point to and say that is the reason why they hate JRPGs as a whole. All the things wrong with Final Fantasy, like random battles, railroaded storylines, and what have you, are the things wrong with modern JRPGs. You can point to them that modern jrpgs do not have any of things anymore and they still do not care because Final Fantasy had them.

After 14, there should not be a new core Final Fantasy game for a long time. I do not mean stop making Final Fantasy games, but the next in the core series XV, should only be used as a "In cased of impending financial ruin, break glass" emergency option. I say milk the fanboys for all their worth and keep making Final Fantasy games set in the established worlds. I would love to see them go back to Gaia, Ivalice, Spira, and the other unnamed worlds like the Crystal Chronicles world, FFVIII, and FFV. Why stop with FF7, so the graphical update to all the psone Final Fantasy games and while they are at it, fix the gaping plot holes that exist in all of them. Hell, do something like Final Fantasy IV: the After Years for the other 8 and 16 bit Final Fantasy games. Better yet, do a Dissidia style game with all the square enix characters. There are enough things Square Enix could do with the establish worlds that they do not need to make a new core Final Fantasy game for a long time.

If you have not guessed already. I prefer jrpgs over western rpgs anyway. Like it or not, jrpgs are a lot more honest with you than western ones. With a JRPG, you know your place. You are an angry id that takes over for combat and nothing else. You have some input as to how to get from plot point A to plot point B, but the rest of the time you are a long for the ride. In a Western RPG, the lies start at character creation and never stop. Sure, you might be wandering around the universe as much as you want, but as soon as you find other people and the story, you have no choice but to follow it. It is just as scripted as the things in jrpgs and your "choices" never affect the outcome. The townsfolk are programmed to overlook your theft, murder, and what have you just so they could have resolution to the conflict.

why did so many hate 12? I loved it alot. the world was cool, the fighting system was nice, though the main character wasnt great everyone else made up for it.

13 looks good and I am super excited about it, but Final Fantasy slumbered for too long. Had this game come out in 2008 instead of 2010 it would have had a better reception but 4 years between Final Fantasies is too much, and the slough of crummy JRPG's this generation have really soured people towards the genre in general.

I'm looking forward to it, though I won't get it for a while after release. The changes look good IMO; the only thing which kind of worries me is the linearity, but even then I'm not too fussed.

Just kidding :D

OT: From what I've seen, it looks great. I'm excited to finally check it out. Let's hope it washes away the bad memories of X-2.

I thought FF 12 was good, LOTS of freedom, and for some reason I just loved when you killed a whole bunch of the same enemy you would get better items, the espers (summons) were AMAZING and for the story (well it's just like every other FF story) and the combat was amazing, it was actually real

Reason enough for me to call shittyness.

Jokes aside, I'm not going to say anything yet. I'll wait until I've played it. Hopefully I'll enjoy it, but Afro-Man (and he shall be called that forever more) is putting me off.
