Some people said that FF12 was just an excuse to whore out some hentai to the kids, never played it myself, but thats the general consensus I heard down the grapevine

X-2 and XII weren't awful, they were just different (well, maybe X-2 was awful). That's the fun of Final Fantasy, it tries to reinvent itself. More developers should do that. XIII won't be a return to the good old days, but a step to a new Final Fantasy. I know I will like it.

12 was awesome, kill chaining was the way to go. Gambits made grinding so much faster and easier. Some excellent side bosses too.

Final Fantasy XII is just so vastly underrated, it's criminal. It is easily the FF game with the deepest crafting system, and never before as optional exploration been so rewarding. The story is good but was undermined by a lead character that was implemented with the function of a passive observer rather than an active player, which went far above the head of the average FF-fan.

I rank it amongst the top 5 FF titles.

Does your grapevine consist of 14 year old horny teenagers? I just don't see the connection. Was a pretty awesome game but was the only Final Fantasy I lost interest in and never finished. I just didn't care about the story or the characters.
Around 2006 it was probably more like horny 16 year olds to be honest, as I said I never played it but heard about it off other friends and forums. I guess, lie you said, the characters and story made you lose interest, maybe thats why theres a slight distaste for it on here

From what I've seen, it looks like it will be similar to the way that FFX played. I really enjoyed 10, and I wasn't a huge fan of 12. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this one will go down as one of the greats of the series.

When a review connects a new Final Fantasy to the Glory of Final Fantasy 6, I'll start listening. Until then, it's just another generic jrpg.

Hell, I'd be happy if they made one reminiscient of 9. 9 was pretty boss too.

That's based on the way you look at it. Lots of people say the series, almost the whole genre even, has been too stagnant for years. Only minor changes, stories and characters with elements too similar to their predecessors, the same old battle system; stuff like that.

Opinions, I guess.

It reinvents itself EVERY FUCKING GAME.

Which is why the fans are so polarized between favorites and hated. They are all so different...

True, I can hardly say that FF has had earthshaking changes. But I like the way they try out new little thingies. New battlesystems, new leveling/upgrading systems. Working with known elements and still get something fresh.

I found that the battle system in 12 was really good - until about halfway through the game. By then you could program basic functions for your characters to follow (called gambits) to help ease the load. Things like "when ally health = less than 50%, use cura" and such.
The problem was, by mid game you had enough slots to pretty much has a completely self-reliant system going. I didn't even need to hold the controller, my characters did the battles for me.

Wow... kinda went off topic there.

Anyways.

I have mixed feelings about FFXIII. I've heard that, because the 360 version will be multiple disks, you won't have free open-world exploration. Wtf? Every Final Fantasy had that. Also, I've heard that you only control the main character in battle. What? I want to control my entire party, thank you!

I'll have to play the game before I can actually say if it will bring FF back to its former glory. =|

I've always been fairly indifferent to the series since it jumped to 3D, but this is the first in the series since 9 to make me think "might be good" and maybe even first since 6 that really impresses me.

Anyways, Square-Enix need to do Chrono series justice and give me Grandia 4!

god i hope so...i feel the same way with the OP, i haven't liked 10-2, 11, or 12. if i don't like 13 either, i may have to give up on FF games.
I feel the same way. A couple of years ago I'd have been super excited over this, but I've been so dissappointed by XII's shallowness and the myriad of crap with a final fantasy titale given to it that I'm treating the whole thing as a disaster waiting to happen.

With luck I'll be pleasently surprised.

12 was excellent, so this is really more of a "will it continue being great?" or "do we have another 8 on our hands?" as far as I'm concerned.

Will it be as bad as XII and X-2? I seriously doubt it. It's looking rather good, and I can't wait to pick it up tonight.

Will it "resurrect" the series? Well I, for one, don't think the series is dead. In a series this long, there is always a slow spot, a game or two that isn't as good as the rest. We're simply in that. The JRPG is still alive and well, and Final Fantasy is just in a rough patch. Maybe this will bring them out of it. But it will be very controversial, as they have removed a lot of the things that some people will consider to be Final Fantasy. I think it will restore faith in some, gain some new fans, and turn some people off to the series forever.

I'd like to see a graphic update of FF6 myself one of the best story lines of the series in my opinion.

It seems to be playing too hard off of FFVII nostalgia. Especially with the overarching storyline and archetype characters.
