See the topic thread. I've heard that quite a few disgruntled FF fans mutter some variation of the above phrase, but I wonder just how many of them there are compared to the overall fanbase. The Escapist doesn't necessarily represent the fanbase as a whole, but based on what I've seen on the forums, we have a very diverse cross-section of Final Fantasy fans.

So, if you are a fan, chime in. I imagine that the results will be at least mildly interesting for fans of all stripes.

Dunno about the "last" chance, but it would certainly go a long way toward bringing modern Square Enix back into a positive view in my eyes after Final Fantasy XIII.

I will say I'm going to be wary of anything that Motomu Toriyama is the director of in the future, though. The only reason I have any excitement for XV is because it's being headed by Tetsuya Nomura.

I'll buy it regardless, since i kinda collect them, i hate xIII-2 and knew 13-3 was gonna suck, but bought it anyways. Sometimes i hate being right.

I'm definately buying the ff14 on ps4 though. That shit is good.

I was going to consider FF13-3 the last chance for Final Fantasy to redeem itself, but then I figured that it would be always blighted by the awful games that proceeded it. But 15 is a clean slate and maybe that will save it.

Tetsuya Nomura is an easy developer to mock; his fashion sense is all belts and zippers, and his storylines tend to be completely laughable. But Kingdom Hearts has remained a consistently good series under his watch (at least the reviews tell me so, I haven't played half the games due to them being spread across at least 4 different platforms). Provided they keep Toriyama and his beloved waifu away from this game, consider me quietly hopeful.

Hell, its been in development long enough as FF: Versus 13, they must have something to show for it.

Considering this article:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132273-Lightning-Could-Appear-in-Future-Final-Fantasys
I wouldn't hold your breath on that note. :p

As for me I probably shouldn't be here. I haven't played an FF game since FFX because that's when I washed my hands of the franchise. But then again I'm just an old fart who prefers the classics that seemed more dependent upon having strong stories and characters over impressive visuals and cinematics.

I actually kind of want to re-buy Final Fantasy XIII for that exact reason, despite having traded it in simply because it's one of the few games in existence which I actually despise.

I don't really care about XIII-2 or Lightning Returns, but I currently own Final Fantasies I-X and XII, and even with my intense derision for XIII I still want to own it again for the sake of the collection... I do always say that I'm a madman.

A friend of mine says i have OCD, because i need to own every game in a series and need play it to completion despite despising the games. I don't know how ocd works, but he may not be wrong.

Maybe. Not sure. Honestly, at this point, I just want to see a Final Fantasy XII HD remaster on Vita and PS3 like they did with X. Preferably the Zodiac version. XV does have me interested though.

Well, I was unhappy with 13. I didn't mind the story or characters, but I hated the combat. It was just boring.

After that, I wasn't particularly sure what I would do. But FFXV looks good so far. It looks good enough that I think I'll be getting it. And even if it is bad, I will probably end up getting FFXVI, too.

Why?
Because I just can't hate Final Fantasy. Some of my favorite games have come from the series. FFVII, FFT, one could even say Kingdom Hearts is part of it. With so many great games, how can I give up on it? Sure, I may wish I could, but then I see a trailer for the new game and forget that.
Damn it, Final Fantasy, why can't I quit you?

Did you get the PS3 version? If so, you don't have to buy the PS4 version. You get it free.

I have completed all the main series so far excluding the MMOs and FFXIII-2 (near the end now uhhhh its not good) and XIII-3 (not sure I can face playing this).

I really think I am done playing all the games in the series for the sake of it and am just going to view each game on a case by case basis now. They have been all over the place I could have done without playing a lot of the early ones TBH (FFII especially) but there are a few that I thought were and are truly excellent (3 of them in fact) while a further one of them imo was worth playing the rest ranged from meh to seriously wasted my time playing this garbage.

If I dont like what FFXV looks like I just wont get it and will see what happens with the next one. I am cautiously optimistic though I just hope Lightning stays out of it. I just cant believe they think she is popular just because some polls said so just use common sense they seriously cant be that insular to notice people havent flocked to her.

Final Fantasy is out of chances, a chance means I buy blindly on the faith of the series and it's developers.

I haven't been even slightly impressed by a final fantasy main entry since 10.

That was QUITE a time ago now, even Sonic Team has put out sonic colours and sonic generations to keep my wallet even on the table. Lost world kind of put my hand back on it, I wasn't overly impressed by it but I certainly didn't hate the game.

Square Enix has nothing, I'm not at their table, my wallet is in my pocket, and I'm looking elsewhere, I buy on overwhelming cries of joy from their table and people proclaiming it the next best thing ever.

Also I am sorely unhappy with the direction the aesthetic has taken. That's not something they seem willing to rectify.

The best thing about Final Fantasy is how it's an anthology series. I hate XIII and will never play it or its sequels again...I honestly didn't like XII either...and I wouldn't touch XI or XIV with a 20-foot poll...

...

What I'm getting at is, if XV bombs then maybe there's hope for XVI (unless of course it too goes MMO)...well the spin-offs are still solid even if the main series continues on with its decline. Luckily it looks like XV will be aping Kingdom Heart's fighting system so there's one positive and it's a damn strong one as far as I'm concerned.

I used to buy a (main series) Final Fantasy game on faith because I knew I would find something to enjoy about it.

Then they released Final Fantasy XIII.

Final Fantasy already ran out of chances.

hd remake of X/X-2 and 14... i'm happy... 7 i utterly hate/enjoy ripping apart with a rusty spoon, and the others weren't ever as interesting to me as X/X-2 were... a few interesting characters and pretty design, but meh, repetative story elements or trying to rehash 7 (like 13 -.-)

i was originally interested in XV when it was Verses-13 cause it looked badass and was supposed to be like a 'bad guy's point of view'... then 13 happened... and i sigh... and now they seem to have turned the awesome-spawn of Virgil and KOS-MOS from the Vs13 trailers into a blue haired cloud-clone... my expectations for this keep dropping... le sigh...

Eh, I never really lost faith in the main series to begin with.

FFXIII was actually pretty decent, but the ridiculous fixation on loading up its universe with unnecessary sequels was what got my goat. The first game was contained enough to stand on its own; I prefer to keep it that way.

I'll always be willing to give the main series games a chance, asides from the MMO ones for somewhat obvious reasons (not to say that they're aren't any good).

I've never had much faith in the series to begin with.

When I was 14, I used to love FFVII. I bought the game when it first came out and played it until early Disc 2 where I got stuck on a boss fight and gave up.

However, one day a friend of mine loaned me a copy of a very different kind of RPG. It was game where you were given total freedom. A game where you could make meaningful decisions that had a permanent impact on the world and the story. That game was Fallout 1.

After that I discovered western Crpgs and never looked back. With the resurgence of the genre in the last decade, I'm really wondering why people don't abandon Final Fantasy. As far as I am concerned, the series is a ship that has been sinking since 8 and really hit rock bottom with XIII and XIV.

After going back and playing FF 13 without prejudice I actually ended up completing the trilogy.
So I'm actually pretty content with the series, even picked up FF X/X-2 HD today too.

Quite honestly, I've not been interested in newer FF titles since XII, which I disliked. The only thing I care about that Square is coming out with is Kingdom Hearts.

I'll probably keep playing the games whether they're good or bad, but I'm not going to give them any of my money because I don't support what they've been doing so far. I'll just wait until I can buy it used unless I hear otherwise that it's stupendously great.
