Alright, so the concept of meeting an extraterrestrial race is a pretty prevalent one in science-fiction, but there are a lot of different variations on how it works. How do you personally feel it will turn out? Will it be ET, Independence Day, Mass Effect, Halo, or something else entirely?

To make the poll more comprehensive, I've tried my best to categorize the different possible outcomes. Here's how they break-down.

Advanced Humans: So it turns out that we're the top dogs in the galaxy. We went out and discovered an alien race, one that was less advanced than us, so now it's time to either lift them up and join together as friends, or wipe them out and take their stuff.

Advanced Aliens: The more classic example. We're visited by a far more advanced and intelligent species, so now the only question is what they're going to do with us. Invite us to the local Galactic Federation or start an extermination?

Accidental: So we're just going around the universe, chilling and minding our own business, when suddenly we stumble across an extremely bewildered group of aliens doing the exact same thing. What happens now? Come to an understanding, or go into a very confused war?

Captcha: near Tannhauser gate.

Surprisingly relevant. Speaking of science-fiction...

They'll arrive and immediately demonstrate their good will:

The aliens will then send their ambassador whose very appearance will fill us with a sense of galactic fellowship:

and in the end the earth will know a peace like it never has known before.

P.S. Could someone tell me how to copy an URL picture from Google Images that won't open a tab?

EDIT: Taken care of, folks. Thanks again, Daystar.

If you right click the picture, the option 'copy image URL' should appear.

That's what I do. Work with me here: I go to the picture, right click it to bring up the option to copy, left click to copy, then use Ctrl V to post it. Which results in tab'd pictures.

Ah, right sorry.

Right, then you put the URL in tabs, like so

(img)URL here(/img)

But use square brackets instead.

From what I remember of the movie, it was largely disappointing. We didn't even really get to see them, they just appeared as Jodi Foster's dead father.

I like what the current results show. A larger vote that the aliens, a race who has probably united in it's discovery over other sentient life and set aside their differences to build ships capable of travelling millions of parsecs are just going to kick us in the shins and take our stuff. Tied with that is the idea that a race that cannot collectively tie it's shoes without an armed conflict over who gets the long bit to do the big loop is going to be able to build something capable of interstellar travel and be friendly to all the little critters we meet.

Though saying that, no one has arrived so far. We might be able to set aside our differences for the greater good and go out on a wander long before any of those smug green bastards decides to come talk to us.

That was just plain old contact wasn't it? First Contact had the hivemind machines go back into the past to enslave humanity so Sir Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes had to go back and convince James Cromwell to stop fucking about and build a ship out of a nuke while Brent Spiner got off with a freaky cyborg chick. Robert Picardo also appeared briefly.

Accidental War probably, due to complications in communication.
I wonder how we'll cross the language barrier in this situation
