Hey i was just wondering if you guys remember what the first song you heard that got you to like a band or genre.

Maybe it will help me and others to get into a new band that we are missing out on listening to.

For me i was using one of those radio station programs like spotify or pandora, forget the name and it played Nemo by nightwish and i have been listening to them ever since, seen them live once too.

I guess this was also the song that got me into the metal genre too. not 100% on what is and isnt metal but now i also like Sabaton which as far as i can tell both these bands are consider metal to a degree.

So how about you guys?

The genre I am most passionate about today is death metal, and I remember my first death metal song clearly. Many years ago, back when bands like Slipknot and Mushroomhead were all I listened to, my friend showed me something he had found on YouTube. It was none other than fucking Suffocation. Of all bands I could be introduced to the genre with, it happened to be the fathers of brutal death metal, one of the more harder-to-get-into variants. Well, I fucking loved it. Absolutely loved it. The song in question is this:

Ahh man, those guitars. Heavy as all hell. Love it.

Electro-Swing.
It's a brilliant genre, has all the up-beat feel of regular swing with some interesting differences.
I'd like to say this is a good example of it, though the style tends to vary between bands.

Then allow me to post my first known song of my second musical passion, epic doom metal! Although this song is one of the bands less-doomier ones, but still!

Well, I think the problem you have, is you're coming into this with a poppish mentality. Metal revolves in a full package, the guitar riffs speak just as loudly, if not more so, than the vocals. The drums and, in many cases, the bass all play an equal role in the music. It isn't the kind of thing you listen to for the sake of singing along at a party, or enjoying songs based on their "deep" lyrics. If anything, the main focus in metal is the riffs. That is what usually defines sub-genres and breaks the bands apart from one another. The riff is law. However, this is getting off topic and is another debate for another time.

Not what got me into electronic music per se, but hard techno/gabba would be a combination of this record

and this one

I don't think either of those will help anyone get into said genre, but it answers your question.

Death Metal:

folk:

hip hop

I remember quite a few of my first songs for specific genres, seeing as they're all still on my regular playlists. Here goes:

My first melodeath song (which acted as a gateway into the entire wonderful genre of death metal as a whole):

My first heavy metal song:

My first punk rock song:

My first folk metal song:

My first doom/stoner metal song:

My first thrash metal song:

My first power metal song:

This is the new version, off the Memories of a Time to Come collection; I think it's more epic and power metally than the original]

Probably Enter Sandman. I remember listening to a lot of old rock when I was young because it was my dad's music taste- stuff like Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin etc. My brother started to learn the guitar and came back being told to learn Guns 'n' Roses and Metallica stuff, that's where I started picking up on heavier stuff. I'm not exactly sure when or what I'd say was the first metal song I liked, but Enter Sandman was the first thing I ever learnt to play on the bass, so I'll say that.

I grew up on the oldies. I knew the words to most of the Beatles catalog before I knew what most of those words meant. Even at 30, the vast majority of the music I listen to was written by bands that were done before I was born. So I can't really offer much in the way of "what got me into it" for most of my music.

Moving to more modern offerings, I really enjoy the music of Alizée.

Moving on to music in English, I must once again declare my undying love of Pandora Celtica [http://pandoraceltica.com/home.cfm]. And not just because a dear friend is in the band.

They're giving away some free songs on their site right now for St. Patrick's Day. Go, download. Love them!

I didn't really like music at all until I heard Hangar 18 by Megadeth.

I hadn't heard much metal before, probably a couple of Judas Priest songs on the radio or something, and then I head that and it opened my ears to the glory of thrash metal, and then I just expanded into other kinds of metal from there.

Lots of metal in this thread. XD I confess the only metal I really listen to is symphonic metal (Nightwish funnily enough being my favorite).

On my topic...

As far as genre goes I'm going to be another who got into electro-swing. I'm really into plain swing in the first place and I love the more modern spin that the electro elements add to it. I'd really love to try and learn how to swing dance and see if I can dance to some it sometime. Though my introductory song/video to the genre is little more... Odd.

Saw this video back when I was more into the show and it was listed on 'Best pony videos of the month' thing. Rest is history. I technically also got introduced by my Zumba class funnily enough. A favorite song of mine to dance to was We no Speak Americano by Yolanda Be Cool, though I wasn't aware of the genre or anything. Just liked the song.

And for an introduction to what is one of my favorite bands...

I heard it on the radio ages ago and just fell in love with the band. Haven't really found myself disliking them since, and I can say that my taste in music has changed drastically over the years leading to many old loved bands becoming hated and vice versa. They're one of the few that have remained constant.

(Disclaimer: I never have and never will claim to have good taste in music. FYI.)

I got into metal when I looked up The Trooper after hearing about it when my family listened to the World War Z on a road trip. Been an Iron Maiden fan ever since.

Could be worse. My Sweet Sixteen present from my parents was a Michael Bolton concert. I loved it, but my friends still have not let me live that down nearly fifteen years later. Though I got some vindication when Michael Bolton was cool for like two months after that Jack Sparrow song.

That's the exact same song that brought me into it. I haven't quite been able to find an artist that embodies the genre in quite the same way as Caravan, though...

OT: My absolute favorite band is HIM, and the very first song I heard from them was "Heartkiller". I don't even remember how I found it, to be honest.

Coming out of my grunge phrase, I turned to Electronic, which included stuff like Trip-Hop, and Drum and Bass, and various other offshoots. Though I did longed for Rock to excite me again like when i first got in to Grunge, or Metal. So i turned to my countries music, to the 80's British Baggy scene, with the likes of The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, and The Charlatans. While researching the baggy scene, i heard it shared ties with another genre in Britain at the time called Shoegazing, thus my music taste was forever change, by the swirling, ethereal, drony guitar rock which i have never heard before. It just clicked with me so much, and i really felt that this was the music for me.

The First band I heard in the genre was obviously My Bloody Valentine, being one of the main bands of shoegazing, with the track sometimes.

I wasn't in love straight away, but i gave it time, and i started listening to other bands in the genre like Ride, Swervedriver, Lush, Boo Radleys, Chapterhouse, and I just felled in love like a teenager with his first kiss.
