Just thought I'd ask fans of combat flight games what their favorite setting or "era" is for the genre. From the rickety, fabric-covered planes of World War I to the most futuristic starfighters, there's certainly a lot to choose from.

My personal favorite is sci-fi, particularly Star Wars related ones like X-Wing, Tie Fighter and Rogue Squadron. World War I is a close second though, with awesome titles like Red Baron and Knights of the Sky.

I would have to go with modern, The Ace Combat series has always been a huge favourite of mine.

Scifi all the way. I really miss the X-wing series, and after getting a chance to play the first and second Wing Commander games a few years back, I kind of want not only a new entry in that series, but an easy, legal way to get access to the rest of the series. Special mention also goes to Mechwarrior style giant robot sims, which are even deader than space sims.

By the way, this isn't coming from someone who has exclusively played scifi games; one of my favorite games as a kid was A10 2: Silent Thunder, which is another game that I'd kill to get a playable copy of.

I never got the chance to try that one, but I played the hell out of the first game (A-10: Tank Killer). Gotta love that trusty 'Hog.

If you want to relive that one, it was on quite a few abandonware sites, last I checked. I sincerely hope I don't get modwrath for posting this; emulation of old consoles seems to be a safe subject around here, but I'm not clear on what the unwritten rule is for old PCs. The written rule, of course, condemns neither.

For me it's a tie between Sci Fi and WW2, I'm particularly fond of X-Wing Alliance, Secret Weapons over Normandy and IL2 Sturmovik.
