I've always been really into European metal, specifically Melodic Death Metal (Kalmah, CoB etc), and recently bands such as Wintersun, which is sort of extreme epic symphonic power everything melodeath. I really love the melodies and how the keyboards and guitars work together, plus the brutal scream/growling.

So escapist metal fans, what do you favour and why?

Sludge metal (Iron Monkey, Graves at Sea, Buzz*oven etc.) or really raw black/death metal (Blasphemy, Axis of Advance, Revenge etc.). Something about raw, chaotic and underproduced metal appeals to me far more than the excessively polished style which just sounds too safe and sanitized to these ears.

Progressive death metal! Pushing the boundaries of conventionality while edging up to (and flirting with) limits of brutality.

As for 'European metal', that doesn't seem like an actual genre to me. What makes Kalmah belong to said genre, while Motörhead does not? Melodic death metal, if you want to lock it into a region, is more often (and more appropriately) called 'Gothenburg metal'. While most melodeath bands (nowadays) don't come from there, it is (arguably) the area where the stylistic roots of the genre come from.

Also, the forums ate your poll.

As far as metal goes it has got to be fast. screaming guitars going a million beets per minute just does it for me the faster the better, good example is some of the stuff dragon force or hammerfall does. though in saying that i do get into heavy power gourds with dark tones and sub text as well. sorry so late at night just cant think of any examples at the moment.

Progressive, or fusion genres, or whatever the fuck you want to call something that you can't easily apply a label to, to be honest. There's very few bands who try to fit to genre constraints and end up being worth listening to. (Well, maybe Slayer or something, Slayer are awesome.)

Progressive Metal, or to be more specific Progressive Death Metal. Also, Technical Death Metal.

Gonna sound like a hipster for a second but I really prefer bands rather that genres or sub-genres. I can like Pearl Jam and dislike Nirvana,or like Twisted Sister and hate Guns'n'Roses,or like Smashing Pumpkins but hate HIM,or love Metallica and also love Megadeth. It's all about the bands.

I like Dethcore, I don't know why but I like the energy and the viciousness of some of the songs. It wasn't my favorite at first because it's hard to understand the vocalists a lot but now I have trained my ears that I can understand what they're saying and it has become much more enjoyable for me.

Progressive metal or symphonic metal, preferably progressive symphonic metal which just mixes all the best aspects of music in my mind. It keeps you guessing and brings the epic into the equation. Not a big fan of growling, screeching and such, so that sadly limits my preferered bands. Huge fan of Symphony X (Go figure), Ayreon, Evergrey, Threshold, Ayreon, Dream Theater and so on, if anyone has any suggestions I would be more than happy to get some ;D

Power metal, think Helloween, HammerFall and Dream Evil. Especially Helloween, my favourite band at the moment. :3

I like a lot of branches of Metal! I like Garage Metal (Metallica), Progressive Rock/Metal, (like Ayreon, Dream Theater and Evergrey), Industrial Metal (like Marilyn Manson and Rammstein), Symphonic Metal (like Nightwish, Epica and of course Within Temptation), Power metal (Kamelot), Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal (Amon Amarth), Pagan Metal (Eluveitie, Ensiferum) and finally Lounge [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXz7PHkRLgQ]! :p

I've never really been a fan of metal. The only metal bands I have in my iTunes library are Dream Theater and Mastodon. The latter are my favourite of the two...I do like me some Mastodon. Despite the potential to get bashed in this thread for what I'm about to say, I'm gonna say it anyway...I've always preferred metalcore, hardcore and the heavier sides of punk to full-on metal...

When I was younger I liked Dragonforce, but I find power metal dull and needlessly masturbatory. But that's obviously just my opinion, I'm not trying to belittle anyone's tastes here.

However...if we were to list the albums that my iTunes library labels as simply "metal" then we would get these:

Alexisonfire - Crisis <<<< Definitely not metal. Post-hardcore, if anything.

Death Is My Only Friend - Death By Stereo <<<< Metalcore/hardcore and no way close to metal compared to one of their other albums, Death For Life

Deftones - White Pony <<< Nu-Metal greatness. Many don't consider them metal though...I dunno.

Dream Theater - Train Of Thought <<< Progressive Metal.

Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence <<<< Definitely not metal. They're screamo, with the beginnings of metalcore.

Hatebreed - Supremacy <<<< Hardcore, not metal. Although some might tenuously consider them metal? Again, I dunno.

Mastodon - Blood Mountain <<<< Yup, metal. Dunno if they'd have a sub-genre stapled onto them though.

Therapy? - Never Apologise, Never Explain <<<< More punk than metal although the band have been described as very simple metal...I would disagree though. They have metal influences but they're closer to hard rock/punk than metal.

Therapy? - Troublegum <<<< Pretty much the same applies as with the above album, although Troublegum has a much more pop-punk sound to it.

Walls of Jericho - With Devils Amongst Us All <<<< Metalcore. That is all.

36 Crazy Fists - Rest Inside the Flames <<<< Metal...although they border on metalcore at times... Maybe? lol

I don't know much about metal and having typed out the word so many time it's started to lose it's meaning to me lol. I've alos completely the point I was going to make at the end of this list. Oh well, make of it what you will.

I heartily disagree with this statement, there's tons of great BM out there at the moment. As a fellow Bathory fan you may enjoy:

Aosoth
Kampfar
Teitanblood
Blut aus Nord
1349
Tsjuder
Behexen
Diocletian
Blasphemophager

Plus tons of other great stuff that is taking black metal in some really interesting directions.

(as a sidenote, only 1349 pass my spellchecker)

Melodic death metal and opera/symphonic. I won't argue with anyone about my taste in music, because I don't force anyone to listen.
