Progressive/Symphonic/Power Metal.

Pretty much everything here [http://epicrockradio.com].

However to name a few bands: Andromeda, Ayreon, Circus Maximus, Dream Theater, Kamelot, and Pagan's Mind.

Here's a cover of David Bowie's "Hallo Spaceboy" by Pagan's Mind.

sabaton are an awesome band, they are one of the few bands out there that get better with each album. Screaming eagles is such a powerful song.
Nearly ALL of their songs are exceptionally powerful, and at times (and this is rare in metal) moving.

Songs about really tragic events, like the Warsaw uprising of 1944, and even the Holocaust.

Seriously, people reading this thread - listen to Sabaton, even if power metal isn't your thing, give a couple of their songs a try.

It's not all tanks and explosions - they express real emotion about the sheer scale of death and destruction of our conflicts, as well as fiercely supporting the "right guy" (they are not pro-war or Neo-Nazis).
I think their most emotional song for me has to be Final solution, cliffs of Gallipoli or purple heart, epic beyond belief. and your right they express the cost of war and the damage done to people countries and humanity.

Ah yes you can't go wrong with the first couple of Ulver albums (funnily enough your avatar caught my eye whilst I was browsing the forums earlier). I've tried so many times to appreciate their later, more avant-garde material, which many assure is me phenomenal, but it seems my brain is hard-wired for metal and little else unfortunately.
Yeah, I personally lover their later avant-garde work as well as their Black Metal Trilogy (I have no idea why Kveldssanger is part of said trilogy), but then again I have a pretty wide range of interests (I don't mean to sound arrogant, just that most people see you as a little demented if you tell them you like a bit of Al Green in between your Death and Cynic XD) and I can understand it's not for everyone, as one Metal Archives user put it 'you either like electronic music or you don't.' I'm really only starting to look into more Black Metal beyond the big second wave names to be honest, so I'm still digging through bands to find more stuff I'll like. By the way, have you heard of May Result?:

Cheers for the rec though, in return may I suggest the band from my avatar; Blasphemy

I'm really liking the music hear, nice blast beat drums and the riffs have quite the crunchy, thrashy feel to them. Got to be honest, I'm not too hot on the vocalist, sounds a little too breathy for me, if you know what I mean, but not too much of a big deal and I otherwise really liked the track. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

I like classic death metal. Many a death metal band made the club tour scene circuit here in Florida. I gave up on metal after `95, it became too commercial.

This video sums up my thoughts on metal, I can enjoy it but I find it so formulaic.

German Power Metal and Old British Heavy Metal. Those are, objectively, the only subgenres of metal worth mentioning.
You know at one time it was called the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Also, that moment in Price of a Mile, where the songs kicks it up a notch and he asks, "Tell me, what is the price of a mile?". Really sad stuff.

And, yes, Cliffs of Gallipoli. A very poignant subject for a song, handled with technical excellence.

They were far too young to die in such a way...

My favourite 3 bands at this point in time, are probably Down Clutch and EYEHATEGOD Not really sure what sub-genre to call them, but they are the bands im loving at the minute. Plus the new FFDP awesome, Machinehead unto the loctus good but less good then the blackening, and Inflames sound of a playground fading, probably my second favorite out of the quite large back catalog.
They are the last 3 albums i bought.

I'm going to vote for power metal on this one.

Not that I like it much more than anything else as such, but the majority of the bands I listen to, is power metal, so that's the most logical choice i believe.

I love grindcore and goregrind. Bands like Cattle Decapitation, Gorelord, Lust of Decay, Anata, etc. I've been gettin' into some sludge like Weedeater and Electric Wizard. Usually the more extreme sub-genres of death metal I love.

Down though... takes the cake as my go to band to feel better. (NOLA is such an overlooked album.)

I've always been a fan of progressive metal. Bands like Redemption, Dream Theater, and Fates Warning. They tend to write some pretty crazy stuff.

Death and black metal, and the variations and mixtures of those genres.

Though I do like power and folk and Viking metal and whatnot.

No but this sounds pretty damn good, I'll have to investigate these guys further. I'm not normally a fan of synths in black metal but they integrate them with just enough subtlety that they don't sound cheesy or overwrought. Cheers for the heads-up.

Glad also you got a kick from Blasphemy. I know what you mean about the vocals as well, they sort of fall between two stylistic stools (death and black) and if I had to single out the bands' (relative, I still think they're great!) weakness they would be it.

I like variety in my metal (generally old-school NWOBHM or progressive death with a hint of jazz a la Opeth or Ephel Duath) and was lucky to be at the Sonisphere festival in Knebworth this summer:

Metallica
Slayer
Opeth
Arch Enemy
Mastodon
Slipknot
Cavalera Conspiracy
Motorhead
Gojira
Firewind
Diamond Head
Tesseract
In Flames
Anthrax
Megadeth
...ALESTORM!
Bill Bailey :)
etc

Haven't seen a line-up like that in a long time: pretty much 3 days of metal heaven-on-earth. Could only have been better if Dio had risen again. :D

[EDIT]

Also, everyone should <3 Van Canto

OMG! Someone else said Alestorm! I figured I was gonna be the only person here to list them as one of their favorite bands. Alestorm Rocks!

As for my tastes, they vary, but I hover more around Symphonic/operatic metal. Nightwish, Within Temptation. Delain. Amberian Dawn. But I have a lot of subgenres on my playlist. From Judas Priest to Dream Theatre :)

Power Metal all the way. Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Seven Kingdoms, Stratovarious, a handful of Battlelore, and Iced Earth (Though a mate of mine says he considers them more of a progressive/thrash band) Special notice for Gamma Ray, I don't listen to them often, but I know they're a good band.

EDIT: The only band that's in a particular is Blind Guardian up front being my favorite, the other's all are awesome too, though Battlelore probably scores lowest for me

I have subgenres I prefer but I don't really embrace them. I find with most metal subgenres, the first half-dozen or so bands that pioneer the subgenre are really good if not downright awesome, but they're quickly followed by a flood of shitty imitators.

E.g., if you look at early 80s thrash, the first bands were the best: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer (if you consider them thrash), Anthrax, Metal Church and Armored Saint. Almost all of them went on to change their sound, sometimes for the better, sometimes...not so much. But the thrash bands that came after them were just derivative and uninteresting.

I'm not sure I ever stuck with a subgenre. I love Dream Theater and early Queensryche but otherwise don't really go for prog-metal. Was obsessed with Type O Negative, My Dying Bride, Prong, later Ministry, and various other goth/industrial/doomdeath bands but there's not many decent bands playing that anymore. I used to listen to Rhapsody of Fire and Blind Guardian a lot but don't really seek out power metal. I was obsessed with the (mostly Dutch) female-fronted symphonic metal scene (Nightwish, Within Temptation, After Forever, Epica, etc.) for a while but find the newer bands from that scene dull and uninspired. I never thought I'd like death or black metal but Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth and Chthonic are pretty cool. Some technical/math metal acts are good too.

I find with a lot of newer metal bands that the overall level of musicianship and complexity of arrangements are probably better than they've ever been in metal, but I can't stand the raspy screamo vocal style. Guess I'm getting old...
